Exploring the Cultural and Culinary Delights of Parma, Italy
Day 8: A Taste of Parma: Unearthing Wine, Tomatoes, and Mechanical Marvels
Delve into the flavors of Parma with Johann and Elke as they explore wine, tomatoes, and the unexpected charm of the APE Museo.
A Day of Discoveries
Today, Elke and I set out to delve deeper into Parma's unique cultural landscape. It's amazing how much a city can reveal about itself through its specialized museums and culinary traditions. I was looking forward to seeing what unique stories Parma had to tell.
Our day began, as most good days do, with breakfast at Ristorante Atmosfera Parma. The blend of Greek and Italian cuisine was an interesting start, offering a unique twist on familiar flavors. I enjoyed the pita with various sauces. It reminded me a bit of our travels in Greece many years ago, a trip we took before Maximilian was born. Elke, of course, enjoyed her Greek yogurt.

Fueled by our delightful breakfast, we ventured to Sala Baganza to visit the Museo del Vino. The drive itself was lovely, offering glimpses of the Emilia-Romagna countryside. The Museo del Vino was nestled in what felt like the heart of Italian wine country. As someone who appreciates a good Riesling from the Rhine Valley, I was curious to explore the traditions and history of winemaking in this region. The museum itself was a treasure trove of artifacts, from ancient wine presses to centuries-old bottles. I found myself particularly drawn to the displays showcasing the evolution of wine labels; the artistry and detail were remarkable. Elke, with her librarian's eye, was fascinated by the museum's collection of literature on wine.

Wine is the poetry of the earth.
After immersing ourselves in the world of wine, we journeyed back towards Parma to explore another of its culinary claims to fame: the tomato. The Museo del Pomodoro, located in Collecchio, was a vibrant celebration of this humble fruit. I never realized just how much history and culture could be packed into one little red sphere! The museum detailed the journey of the tomato from its origins in South America to its adoption and transformation into a staple of Italian cuisine. There were exhibits on different varieties of tomatoes, canning techniques, and even tomato-inspired art. It was fascinating to learn about the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Italian people in preserving and utilizing this versatile ingredient. I was particularly intrigued by the displays showcasing vintage tomato canning equipment; as a restorer of antique furniture, I have a soft spot for well-crafted tools and machinery.

For lunch, we chose Osteria Virgilio, a charming little trattoria in Parma. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured classic Parmesan dishes. We started with the prosciutto, of course, and then Elke had tortelli d'erbette while I enjoyed tagliatelle. The pasta was cooked perfectly, and the sauces were rich and flavorful. It was a truly authentic Parmesan dining experience. It reminded me a lot of the small Gasthaus that we like to visit in the Odenwald.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge our curiosity with a visit to the APE Parma Museo. Now, I must admit, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a museum dedicated to the APE, that quirky little three-wheeled vehicle that zips around the Italian countryside. But, as it turns out, the APE is more than just a mode of transportation; it's a symbol of Italian ingenuity and resourcefulness. The museum showcased the history and evolution of the APE, from its humble beginnings as a post-war utility vehicle to its current status as a cultural icon. There were exhibits on different models of the APE, its various uses (from transporting goods to serving as a mobile coffee bar), and even its role in Italian cinema. It was a surprisingly engaging and informative experience. I even found myself admiring the APE's simple yet effective design. It's a testament to the Italian ability to create something functional and beautiful out of limited resources.

Before dinner, we stopped by Choice - Cocktail Bar for a drink. It was a stylish and intimate spot, with a relaxed atmosphere. I opted for a classic Negroni, while Elke tried one of their signature cocktails. The drinks were expertly crafted, and the service was friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

For dinner, we chose Ristorante Parma Rotta, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Parmesan cuisine. The restaurant was located in an old farmhouse, adding to its rustic charm. The menu featured a variety of local specialties, and we decided to share a selection of dishes. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the portions were generous. It was a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration.

As we strolled back to Sina Maria Luigia, I reflected on the day's discoveries. Parma had surprised me with its depth and diversity. From the refined elegance of the Museo del Vino to the quirky charm of the APE Parma Museo, the city had revealed its unique character and spirit. And, of course, the food had been exceptional. I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this corner of Italy with Elke. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding, the moments when you connect with a place on a deeper level and gain a new appreciation for its culture and history.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Perfume Museum, Casa della Musica, and Museo Renata Tebaldi. It sounds like another day filled with unique cultural experiences. And perhaps we'll find a nice little shop like Wooden Parma to pick up a souvenir or two. I'm particularly interested in the Casa della Musica; perhaps I’ll find some sheet music for my zither.
