A Sentimental Goodbye to Lisbon

As our journey through Portugal neared its end, Elke and I found ourselves drawn to the soulful district of Alfama in Lisbon. It felt fitting to spend our final day immersed in the oldest part of the city, a place where history whispers from every cobblestone and Fado music fills the air with longing. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and a touch of melancholy as we prepared to bid farewell to this captivating country.

Our day began, not in Alfama, but with a hearty breakfast at Pure Taste. A good meal always sets the tone, and today was no exception. Fuelled and ready, we took a train from Sintra to Lisbon. The journey itself was a pleasant experience, watching the landscape shift as we approached the capital. Upon arriving in Lisbon, we headed straight for Alfama.

The Alfama district is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets, a testament to its Moorish past. The name 'Alfama' is said to originate from the Arabic 'al-hamma', meaning 'hot springs' or 'fountains'. As we wandered through the maze, I couldn't help but feel a sense of stepping back in time. The buildings, adorned with colorful tiles, seemed to lean in towards each other, creating a sense of intimacy and enclosure. Elke, with her keen eye for detail, was particularly fascinated by the azulejos, the traditional Portuguese tiles that decorate many of the facades. Each tile seemed to tell a story, reflecting the neighborhood's long and rich history.

We strolled along the streets, soaking in the atmosphere. The air was filled with the sounds of daily life – the chatter of locals, the distant strains of Fado music, and the clatter of trams making their way through the narrow streets. We passed by small shops selling traditional crafts, and tiny restaurants with tables spilling out onto the sidewalks. It was a feast for the senses, a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells.

Our exploration led us to the Church of Saint Anthony of Lisbon, a significant landmark built on the site where the saint is believed to have been born in 1195. Saint Anthony, also known as Anthony of Padua, is a revered figure in Lisbon, the patron saint of the city and of lovers. The church itself is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture, rebuilt after the devastating 1755 earthquake that shook Lisbon.

Inside the church, we found a sense of peace and tranquility. The interior was bathed in soft light, illuminating the intricate details of the altarpiece and the statues of Saint Anthony. We spent a few moments in quiet contemplation, reflecting on the life and legacy of this remarkable saint. It was fascinating to learn that Saint Anthony was canonized less than a year after his death, a testament to his immense popularity.

Stepping out of the church, we decided to partake in a local tradition. In front of the church stands a statue of St. Anthony. The tradition is that you will find a new (or better!) partner if you are able to throw and land a coin in the book of Saint Anthony on the statue in front of his church. Elke gave it a try, but unfortunately, her aim was off. We shared a laugh, and I teased her that perhaps our relationship was already perfect, and Saint Anthony didn't think she needed a 'better' partner.

For lunch, we ventured to Monserrate, a restaurant recommended by a local. The food was delicious, a true taste of Portuguese cuisine. We savored every bite, knowing that it would be our last traditional meal in Portugal for this trip. As we ate, we discussed our favorite moments from the past twelve days – the breathtaking views from Pena Palace, the serene beauty of Quinta da Regaleira, and the warmth and hospitality of the Portuguese people.

After lunch, we indulged in a bit of shopping at El Corte Inglés Lisboa. I was on the lookout for a special souvenir to remind me of our trip, and Elke, of course, couldn't resist browsing the book section. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted tile depicting a scene from Sintra, a perfect memento of our time in Portugal.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at The Old Bull Bar&Lounge, a cozy spot where we could relax and unwind before heading to the airport. We sipped on local wine, reminiscing about our adventures and sharing stories with fellow travelers. It was the perfect way to end our journey, surrounded by good company and the lingering taste of Portugal.

Before heading back to our hotel to collect our luggage and then to the airport, we enjoyed one last meal at Porta do Mar. It was a fitting end to our culinary journey through Portugal, a final taste of the flavors we had come to love. As we sat there, savoring our meal, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared and the memories we had created.

As we prepare to leave Portugal, I realize that this trip has been more than just a vacation. It has been a journey of discovery, a chance to immerse ourselves in a new culture, and an opportunity to reconnect with each other. Portugal, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted people, has captured a piece of our hearts. We will carry these memories with us, cherishing them always.

Tomorrow, we fly back to Frankfurt, back to our familiar routines. But a part of us will always remain in Sintra, in Lisbon, in Portugal. And who knows, perhaps someday we will return to explore even more of this enchanting country. Until then, *Adeus, Portugal*. It has been an honor.

Looking ahead, I’m eager to return to my workshop in Heidelberg. There’s a beautiful old Biedermeier desk that’s been waiting patiently for my attention, and I’m excited to get back to the meticulous work of restoring it to its former glory. The patience and attention to detail that I’ve honed over the years will be put to good use, and I look forward to the challenge of bringing a piece of history back to life. This trip to Portugal has not only enriched my soul but has also given me a renewed appreciation for the beauty and craftsmanship that I strive to preserve in my work.
