Exploring the Enchanting Palaces of Sintra
Day 9: A Royal Day Trip and Lisbon's Historical Heartbeat
Join Johann and Elke on a captivating journey from Queluz Palace's royal gardens to Lisbon's vibrant historical center. A day of beauty and history!
From Royal Retreats to Urban Echoes
Today, Elke and I embarked on a journey that blended the serene elegance of a royal past with the vibrant pulse of a city steeped in history. It was a day of contrasts, from the manicured gardens of a palace to the bustling streets of Lisbon, each offering a unique perspective on Portugal's rich tapestry.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tapas da Cris. The cozy atmosphere and the delightful array of small, flavorful dishes were the perfect start to our explorations. Cris herself was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home as we savored the traditional Portuguese flavors.

A Morning at Queluz National Palace
The morning sun cast a golden glow upon the Queluz National Palace as we arrived. Often referred to as the Portuguese Versailles, the palace exuded an air of refined elegance. The architecture, a blend of late Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical styles, was a feast for the eyes, and I found myself captivated by the intricate details. Elke, with her keen eye for design, was particularly impressed by the ornate, gold-detailed rooms, noting the clear influence of various architectural periods. As a restorer of antique furniture, I was naturally drawn to the craftsmanship evident in every corner of the palace, imagining the skilled hands that had shaped these masterpieces centuries ago.

To walk through Queluz is to step back in time, to witness the grandeur of a bygone era and appreciate the artistry that has endured through the ages.
The gardens of Queluz were equally enchanting. We wandered through the formal French-style gardens, admiring the manicured lawns, fountains, and sculptures. The peaceful ambiance was a welcome respite, and we took our time to soak in the beauty of our surroundings. I could easily picture King Pedro III and Queen Maria I strolling through these very gardens, their laughter echoing through the air.
Lunch at Taverna Criativa
After immersing ourselves in the royal splendor of Queluz, we made our way back towards Lisbon for lunch. We chose Taverna Criativa, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Portuguese cuisine and creative dishes. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a delightful culinary experience. I opted for the grouper in bread crumble with tomato rice, while Elke chose the ravioli. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, showcasing the best of Portuguese gastronomy. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel incredibly welcome, adding to the overall charm of the taverna.

An Afternoon Immersed in Lisbon's History
With our appetites satisfied, we ventured into the heart of Lisbon to visit the Lisbon Story Centre. Located in Terreiro do Paço, this interactive museum offered a fascinating journey through the city's history, from its early beginnings to the present day. The exhibits were engaging and informative, bringing the past to life through multimedia displays and historical recreations.

The Lisbon Story Centre provided a comprehensive overview of the key events that shaped the city, including the devastating earthquake of 1755. The audio guide, available in multiple languages, enhanced the experience, providing context and insights into the exhibits. Elke and I were particularly moved by the depiction of the earthquake, which highlighted the resilience and strength of the Portuguese people in the face of adversity.
As we walked through the exhibits, I found myself reflecting on the layers of history that permeate Lisbon, from its Roman origins to its role as a global trading hub. The Lisbon Story Centre successfully captured the essence of the city, offering a balanced and engaging narrative that appealed to visitors of all ages.
Retail Therapy and Evening Drinks
Following our historical immersion, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. A visit to Primark was on the cards, enticed by the promise of affordable fashion and a chance to pick up some souvenirs. Elke, ever the practical one, found some stylish and comfortable walking shoes, while I managed to snag a few new shirts at a surprisingly reasonable price.

As the day drew to a close, we sought out a place to unwind and enjoy an evening drink. Centro, a local bar, offered a relaxed atmosphere and a selection of Portuguese wines. We savored our drinks, reminiscing about the day's adventures and soaking in the ambiance of the city. It was the perfect way to cap off a day that had been both enriching and enjoyable.

A Culinary Farewell
For our final meal of the day, we chose Fatto da Cláudio Coelho, an Italian restaurant in Sintra. While it might seem odd to opt for Italian food in Portugal, the restaurant had garnered rave reviews, and we were curious to see what it had to offer. We were not disappointed. The pasta was cooked to perfection, the sauces were rich and flavorful, and the tiramisu was a delightful indulgence. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with diverse experiences.

Reflections on the Day
Today was a testament to the multifaceted charm of the Lisbon region. From the regal splendor of Queluz Palace to the historical depths of Lisbon and the simple pleasures of shopping and dining, we experienced a wide range of what this part of Portugal has to offer. It was a day that stimulated both the mind and the senses, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for the country's cultural heritage.
As we head into tomorrow, we are looking forward to exploring the Chapel of Our Lady of the Mountain and the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, in Lisbon, which I'm sure will provide us with even more beautiful vistas and photo opportunities. We will also be sure to visit Casa Sintra, and perhaps enjoy a late evening drink at The Clubber Afterhours.
Before I close for the night, it's important to note that I seem to have forgotten my reusable water bottle and portable phone charger. A minor setback, but one that reminds me to be more diligent in the future.
Until tomorrow, auf wiedersehen!
