Exploring the Enchanting Palaces of Sintra
Day 8: Lisbon's Historical Echoes: A Day of Discovery in Belém
Explore Lisbon's rich maritime history with visits to the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, followed by local culinary delights.
A Journey Through Time in Belém
Today, Elke and I embarked on a historical journey to Belém, a district in Lisbon that whispers tales of Portugal's Age of Discovery. As a restorer of antique furniture, I'm naturally drawn to places where history is palpable, where every stone and carving tells a story. Belém, with its iconic monastery and tower, promised a day of immersion into Portugal's rich maritime past.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Pic Nic I, a local spot known for its traditional pastries and strong coffee. Fortified for the day, we set off to explore the architectural marvels that awaited us. I made sure to bring my camera, as I knew I would want to capture every detail of these historical landmarks, much like I meticulously document the details of the furniture I restore.

First on our itinerary was the Jerónimos Monastery. As we approached, the sheer scale and intricate details of the Manueline architecture took my breath away. The monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was built in the 16th century to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. The construction, which began in 1501, took over a century to complete, with numerous architects contributing to its design. The maritime motifs and sculptural decorations reflect Portugal's deep connection to the sea and its discoveries.

Wandering through the cloisters, I was struck by the serenity of the space. The delicate carvings and the play of light and shadow created a peaceful atmosphere, a stark contrast to the bustling city outside. The monastery served as a final resting place for members of the Portuguese royal family, including Vasco da Gama himself. I found myself reflecting on the lives of those who walked these halls centuries ago, their ambitions, their triumphs, and their legacies.
History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
Leaving the monastery, we strolled along the Tagus River to the Belém Tower, another iconic symbol of Portugal's maritime power. Built in the 16th century, the tower served as a fortress, protecting Lisbon from incoming raids. Designed by Francisco de Arruda, the Belém Tower stands on the Tagus River, and is a blend of Gothic, Manueline, and Moorish architectural styles.

Climbing the narrow spiral staircase, we reached the terrace at the top, where we were rewarded with panoramic views of the river and the city. I imagined the sailors of old, setting sail from this very spot, embarking on voyages to unknown lands. The tower, once a symbol of defense, now stands as a reminder of Portugal's adventurous spirit and its contributions to the world.
After immersing ourselves in history, it was time to indulge in some local cuisine. We headed to A Lanterna, a restaurant recommended by a local, for lunch. The restaurant was cozy, and the aroma of fresh seafood filled the air. Elke and I shared a platter of grilled fish, savoring the flavors of the sea. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the simple seasonings allowed the natural flavors to shine through. It was a delightful meal, a perfect complement to our historical explorations.

In the late afternoon, we took some time to explore the local shops. We stopped by H'art Portugal, a gift shop in Sintra, where we found unique souvenirs crafted by local artisans. I was particularly drawn to the handcrafted ceramics, each piece a testament to the skill and artistry of its creator. Elke purchased a few small items to bring home to our son, Maximilian.

As evening approached, we made our way to Clube de Fado, a traditional Fado house in Lisbon. Fado, a genre of Portuguese music characterized by mournful tunes and heartfelt lyrics, is an integral part of Portuguese culture. The dimly lit venue, with its intimate atmosphere, set the stage for an evening of soulful music. The Fado performance was captivating. The singers poured their hearts out, their voices filled with emotion. The melancholic melodies resonated deeply, evoking a sense of longing and nostalgia. It was an experience that transcended language, a connection to the soul of Portugal. The food was good with very good quality of food, both for meat and fish dishes.

Before heading back to our Quinta, we stopped by Salla de Estar, a bar near the Sintra train station, for a nightcap. The bar had a quirky, eclectic decor, with a mix of vintage furniture and contemporary art. We enjoyed a glass of local wine, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar was lively, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
