Exploring the Natural Wonders of Phong Nha-Ke Bang
Day 9: A Day of Simple Pleasures in Phong Nha
Immerse yourself in the local culture of Phong Nha with vegan delights, charming shops, and the stunning beauty of the National Park.
Tranquility Found in the Heart of Vietnam
Today was a day of embracing the simple joys of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. It’s remarkable how a place known for its grand caves and adventurous activities can also offer moments of quiet reflection and connection with the local culture. I found myself drawn to the everyday experiences, the tastes, and the small discoveries that make a place truly memorable.

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. Elke and Maximilian were particularly excited, as they had been craving a plant-based meal. The restaurant, with its friendly staff and riverside view, was the perfect spot to start our day. I opted for the iced coconut coffee, a local specialty, while Elke enjoyed a vibrant salad, and Maximilian chose a hearty tofu dish. It’s fascinating how vegan cuisine has found such a strong foothold in Vietnam, blending traditional flavors with modern dietary preferences.

The simple act of sharing a meal can be a profound way to connect with a new culture and appreciate the beauty of everyday life.
After breakfast, we decided to explore the local shops. Our destination was Đặc sản, cafe Hương Rừng, a charming little shop known for its regional specialties and coffee. As a restorer of antique furniture, I am always drawn to the craftsmanship and attention to detail in local products. We purchased some local coffee beans, which I plan to use in my antique coffee grinder back in Heidelberg, adding a Vietnamese touch to our German mornings. Maximilian, ever the adventurous one, picked up some local snacks that I suspect will be gone before we even leave Phong Nha. Elke found a beautiful hand-woven scarf, a perfect memento of our time here.

With our shopping bags in tow, we ventured back into Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The weather in December is quite pleasant, with mild temperatures ranging from 16°C to 22°C. It was the perfect weather for a leisurely exploration of the park's trails. We spent the afternoon simply wandering, taking in the stunning limestone karst landscapes and lush biodiversity that make this park so unique. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city air back home. We even spotted a few monkeys in the distance, their playful antics adding a touch of whimsy to our walk.
For lunch, we chose Lotus Restaurant, enticed by its reputation for authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its popularity. I ordered the *bun cha*, a Hanoi specialty, while Elke opted for the *cao lau*, a regional noodle dish. Maximilian, never one to shy away from new experiences, tried the *mi Quang*, a turmeric-infused noodle soup. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, a true celebration of Vietnamese culinary artistry.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at ARTIST'S ZONE for dinner. This restaurant, known for its inviting ambiance and friendly staff, was the perfect place to reflect on our day. I enjoyed a flavorful chicken salad, while Elke savored the spring rolls, and Maximilian devoured a hearty sandwich. The restaurant also offered a selection of affordable beers, including some craft options, which we happily sampled.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore the famous Phong Nha Cave. The anticipation is building, and I am eager to witness the natural wonders that lie beneath the surface. We'll start the day with breakfast at The Villas Restaurant, followed by lunch at Son Doong Restaurant after our cave exploration, and cap off the day with dinner at PHONG NHA FAMILY RESTAURANT. We also intend to do some souvenir shopping at Phong Nha Collection.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the simple pleasures of today. It is in these quiet moments, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, that I truly appreciate the beauty of the world around us. I am reminded of a quote by the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig:
The great things simply happen. What is essential is to move in the right direction. And for now, that direction is towards more exploration and discovery in this beautiful corner of Vietnam. I am so glad I could share this with my family. This trip has been a wonderful bonding experience for us, and I am excited to see what adventures tomorrow will bring.
The cooler evening temperatures in December mean that we’re all feeling quite refreshed and ready for a good night’s sleep. I am especially grateful that I remembered to pack my warmer jacket, as the evenings can get quite chilly. Elke, of course, is already planning our next adventure, pouring over maps and travel guides. Maximilian is busy editing the photos he took today, eager to share them with his friends back home. And me? I am content to simply soak in the memories of today, knowing that tomorrow will bring even more opportunities for exploration and discovery. I think I will sleep well tonight.
Tomorrow marks our final day in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and I am determined to make the most of it. I am eager to explore the Phong Nha Cave and soak in the last moments of this beautiful landscape. I am also looking forward to returning home, to my workshop, and to the familiar comforts of Heidelberg. But I know that a part of me will always remain here, in the heart of Vietnam, amidst the stunning caves and the warm smiles of the local people. Until next time…
