Today was unlike any other day in my life. The sheer scale and raw beauty of Hang Sơn Đoòng left me utterly speechless. It's an experience that will forever be etched in my memory, a true testament to the wonders our planet holds. From the delicious meals to the awe-inspiring sights, every moment was a treasure.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Phong Nha Rooftop Bar. The rooftop setting offered stunning panoramic views of the surrounding limestone karsts, a perfect backdrop to fuel up for the day's adventure. I enjoyed a strong Vietnamese coffee, while Elke opted for a lighter breakfast of fresh fruit and yogurt. Maximilian, of course, went for the heartiest option – a full breakfast with eggs, bacon, and toast. It's moments like these, sharing a meal with my family amidst such breathtaking scenery, that make these trips so special.

To witness Son Doong is to witness a world within our world, a hidden realm of unparalleled beauty and scale.

After breakfast, we set off for Hang Sơn Đoòng. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the entrance. The trek to the cave was an adventure in itself, winding through dense jungle and crossing crystal-clear streams. I was grateful for my sturdy hiking boots, a definite essential on this trip. It reminded me a bit of hiking in the Odenwald forest back home, though the vegetation here is far more exotic. I must admit, I was kicking myself for forgetting my rain poncho, as the humidity was quite high, but the excitement of what lay ahead quickly overshadowed any discomfort.

As we descended into the cave, the temperature noticeably dropped. The scale of the cavern was simply staggering. Sunlight streamed through massive sinkholes, illuminating the otherworldly landscape within. Towering stalagmites and stalactites created a surreal atmosphere, like something out of a Jules Verne novel. I felt like a character in one of those adventure books I used to read as a boy. The air was thick with moisture, and the sounds of dripping water echoed through the vast space. It was truly humbling to be surrounded by such ancient and magnificent formations.

We spent hours exploring the cave, marveling at its unique ecosystem. Our guide explained how the cave has its own weather system, with clouds forming within its massive chambers. It's hard to fathom the forces of nature that have shaped this place over millions of years. I tried to capture the immensity of it all with my camera, but no photograph could truly do it justice. It's something you have to experience firsthand to fully appreciate. I made sure to use the camera I brought, remembering the time I forgot to bring a camera to the Rhine Valley wine festival.

Midday found us enjoying a delicious lunch at Nhà Hàng Hải Sản Nhật Phong 3. Though I know it is primarily a seafood restaurant, they were gracious enough to accommodate our group with a variety of options, including some vegetarian dishes for Elke. Maximilian, of course, devoured a plate of grilled shrimp. The restaurant was quite busy, but the service was efficient and friendly. I particularly enjoyed the fresh spring rolls, a delightful taste of local cuisine. It was a welcome respite after our morning of exploration, and we were all grateful for the chance to refuel.

In the late afternoon, after our incredible exploration of Hang Son Doong, we took some time to reflect and relax. We enjoyed dinner at The Villas Restaurant, a charming eatery nestled along the banks of the Son River. The setting was idyllic, with the majestic limestone mountains providing a stunning backdrop. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese dish, while Elke enjoyed a vegetarian stir-fry. Maximilian, predictably, ordered a burger. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and convivial. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience some local nightlife at King Kong Bar Phong Nha. The bar was lively and welcoming, with a good selection of drinks and music. I enjoyed a local beer while Maximilian tried his hand at the pool table. Elke, ever the librarian, struck up a conversation with some fellow travelers about their favorite books. It was a fun and relaxed end to a truly unforgettable day. While I am not usually one for bars, I must admit that I enjoyed the atmosphere.

I am particularly looking forward to visiting the Lá Store tomorrow, as I need to find a replacement portable phone charger, which I seem to have misplaced. What a day!
