Day 6: Nature, Art, and Ancient Echoes: A Day of Discovery in Nara
Explore Nara's natural beauty at Mount Wakakusa, delve into history at Todaiji Hokkedo, and discover local art at the Nara Craft Museum.
A Day of Exploration and Reflection
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the natural beauty of Nara with its rich artistic and historical heritage. I started with a climb up Mount Wakakusa, followed by a visit to the serene Todaiji Hokkedo, and finished with an exploration of local craftsmanship at the Nara Craft Museum. Each location offered a unique perspective on this captivating city, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for its cultural and natural treasures.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kinatei. Knowing I had a climb ahead of me, I opted for a substantial meal – a traditional Japanese set with miso soup, rice, and a variety of pickled vegetables. The simple, plant-based fare was the perfect fuel for the morning's adventure.
Scaling Mount Wakakusa
The first stop was Mount Wakakusa. The ascent was invigorating. The path wound its way up the hillside, offering panoramic views of Nara Park and the city beyond. Though the July sun was warm, a gentle breeze kept the climb comfortable. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to soak in the scenery. From my vantage point, I could see the sprawling expanse of Nara Park, dotted with ancient temples and, of course, the famous Nara deer.
Reaching the summit, I was rewarded with an even more breathtaking vista. The entire city lay before me, a tapestry of traditional architecture and modern development, all framed by the lush green hills. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the landscape. I took several photographs, trying to capture the essence of the view, but as always, the reality far surpassed the image. It’s something you have to experience to truly appreciate.
The mountain offered a breathtaking view of Nara, a perfect blend of nature and history.
I learned that Mount Wakakusa is also known as Mount Mikasa. The name Wakakusa, meaning young grass, is quite fitting, given the mountain's grassy slopes. I also discovered the Yamayaki festival, where the grass is burned in January. I can only imagine how spectacular that would be to witness, the entire mountainside ablaze with fire.
A Spiritual Journey at Todaiji Hokkedo
After descending Mount Wakakusa, I made my way to Todaiji Temple, specifically to the Hokkedo Hall (Sangatsudo). While Todaiji is renowned for its massive Buddha statue, the Hokkedo Hall offered a more intimate and spiritual experience.

The Hokkedo Hall is the oldest structure in the Todaiji complex. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the serene atmosphere. The hall is home to a collection of ancient statues, each with its own unique story and presence. The main image, the Fukukensaku Kannon, is a multi-armed figure surrounded by warrior kings. The intricate details and the sheer age of the statues were awe-inspiring. I spent a long time simply sitting in the hall, absorbing the peaceful ambiance and contemplating the history that permeated the space.
I found it fascinating that the hall is also called Sangatsudo, or Third Month Hall, because the Lotus Sutra is recited there in the third month of the year. The Lotus Sutra is very important in Tendai Buddhism, which is the sect of Buddhism that I follow. It felt special to be in a place where such an important practice takes place. I learned that there’s also a secret figure, Shukongō-jin, that is only visible on December 16th each year. Perhaps I will have to plan a return trip!
For lunch, I chose Naramachi Hiyori. The restaurant is known for its Kyoto-style Japanese cuisine, and I was eager to sample some local flavors. I opted for a set meal that included a variety of small dishes, each beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The meal was a delightful culinary journey, a testament to the artistry and skill of Japanese chefs.

Discovering Local Art at the Nara Craft Museum
In the afternoon, I visited the Nara Craft Museum. As a restorer of antique furniture, I was particularly interested in seeing the traditional crafts of the region. The museum is located on Naramachi-odori Street, in the heart of the historic Naramachi district. The location itself added to the experience, as I was able to soak in the atmosphere of this well-preserved area.

The museum showcased a variety of Nara crafts, including lacquerware, hand-carved figures, and other traditional art forms. I was particularly impressed by the intricate detail and the level of craftsmanship involved. The museum also displayed the tools used in the creation of these crafts, giving me a deeper understanding of the processes involved. I watched a demonstration of a craftsman creating a small wooden sculpture, and I was amazed by the skill and precision of his movements.
Each craft told a story of tradition, skill, and the enduring spirit of Nara's artisans.
I was particularly drawn to the Nara lacquerware, with its rich colors and intricate designs. The ittobori hand-carved figures were also fascinating, each one a unique work of art. I learned that the museum also holds live demonstrations and classes, as well as the Nara Crafts Festival once a year. I will have to check if any of these events are taking place during my stay.
Before leaving, I visited the museum shop, where I purchased a small lacquerware box as a souvenir. It was a tangible reminder of the artistry and skill that I had witnessed at the museum. It will be a reminder of my trip to Nara, and a piece of furniture that I can cherish for years to come.
For dinner, I decided to try RAhOTSU, a Thai restaurant that uses local Nara ingredients. I was intrigued by the idea of Thai cuisine with a Japanese twist. I ordered a green curry made with Yamato Niku Dori chicken, a local specialty. The curry was flavorful and delicious, a perfect blend of Thai spices and fresh, local ingredients. It was an unexpected but delightful culinary experience.

Finally, to cap off the day, I ventured to Woo Koo Bar?. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals and a few tourists. The bartender was friendly and welcoming, and I enjoyed chatting with him about the city and its culture. I had a glass of local sake, a smooth and flavorful drink that was the perfect ending to a day of exploration. The bar also had darts and played English music. It seemed like a great place to relax and unwind after a long day.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Kasuga Taisha Kokuhoden Museum, the Heijo Palace Site Museum, and the Nara City Museum of Art. I am looking forward to another day of discovery, delving deeper into the history and culture of this fascinating city.
Today was a reminder of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the beauty around us.
