Farewell, Nan!

As our 11-day adventure in Nan draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of contentment and a tinge of melancholy. This morning, the air felt crisper, carrying the scent of rain-soaked earth and blooming jasmine. It was a perfect day to soak in the last bits of Nan's serene beauty before heading back to the hustle and bustle of Vancouver. Today was all about savoring the final moments, exploring a bit more, and gathering those last-minute souvenirs.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at At Milk Nan, House of Milk. Mere and I shared a selection of their famous milk-based treats. I opted for a creamy yogurt smoothie while she enjoyed a classic Thai iced milk tea. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploration.

Our first stop was Bali Nan, a place that’s been generating quite the buzz online. I’ll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. The name alone made me wonder if it was just another tourist trap trying to capitalize on Bali's fame. But, I decided to keep an open mind, and I'm glad I did.

The entrance fee was a modest 50 baht, and what we found inside was quite charming. Bali Nan is designed to resemble the iconic Gates of Heaven in Bali, offering visitors a chance to capture memorable photos. The staff was incredibly hospitable, guiding us with poses and ensuring we got the best shots. It’s a fun, lighthearted place that embraces the beauty of its natural surroundings. While it's not the real Bali, it offers a delightful taste of its serene ambiance. The scenic mountain views added to the charm, making it a worthwhile stop.

Travel is about the journey, not just the destination.

Next on our itinerary was Thong Noi Palace, a place steeped in history and culture. While not as grand as some of the other palaces I’ve visited, Thong Noi Palace offered a unique glimpse into the past. The architecture was a blend of traditional Thai and colonial influences, reflecting the complex history of the region. Wandering through the grounds, I couldn't help but imagine the lives of those who once walked these halls. The palace exuded a sense of quiet dignity, standing as a testament to Nan's rich heritage.

For lunch, we ventured to Chalala' Malatang, a local spot known for its flavorful and customizable hot pot. I had heard so much about Malatang and was eager to try it myself. The concept is simple: you choose your ingredients from a wide array of options – vegetables, meats, noodles, and various toppings – and then they cook it all together in a spicy, numbing broth.

I piled my bowl high with bok choy, enoki mushrooms, tofu, and some glass noodles. The broth was rich and aromatic, with just the right amount of heat. It was a truly satisfying and comforting meal, perfect for a slightly overcast day. Mere, ever the adventurous one, added some extra chili oil to hers, resulting in a fiery concoction that had her reaching for her water glass every few seconds.

After lunch, it was time for some retail therapy at Bunny Closet. This charming boutique offered a delightful array of clothing, accessories, and local crafts. I picked up a few small gifts for Sailosi and Mere, wanting to bring back a piece of Nan for them to remember our trip by. Mere found a beautiful handwoven scarf that she absolutely loved, a perfect addition to her wardrobe back in Vancouver.

As the day wound down, we made our way to Huen Horm Restaurant for our final dinner in Nan. This place came highly recommended, known for its authentic Northern Thai cuisine and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant was nestled in a traditional wooden house, with open-air seating that allowed us to soak in the evening ambiance.

We ordered a selection of dishes, including the fried chicken wings, stir-fried mushrooms, and a flavorful curry with sticky rice. Each dish was a burst of flavors, showcasing the unique culinary heritage of Northern Thailand. The spices were fragrant, the ingredients fresh, and the overall experience was simply delightful. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey in Nan.

Reflecting on our time in Nan, I am struck by the warmth and hospitality of the people. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with smiles and genuine kindness. It reminded me of the close-knit communities back in Fiji, where everyone looks out for each other and strangers are welcomed with open arms.

This trip to Nan has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of discovery, connection, and reflection. I've learned so much about Thai culture, history, and cuisine, and I've made memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. As we prepare to leave tomorrow, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible experience. Nan, with its serene beauty and welcoming spirit, has captured a piece of my heart. I know that I will carry the memories of this trip with me, always reminding me of the simple joys in life and the importance of connecting with different cultures. Vinaka vakalevu, Nan! (Thank you very much, Nan!)

Tomorrow, we head back to Bangkok for our flight back to Vancouver. It’s going to be a long journey, but I know that the memories of Nan will keep me smiling all the way home. Until next time, Thailand!
