Saturday in Nan: History, Temples, and Mushroom Delights

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Nan, soaking up its history, and savoring its unique flavors. It’s amazing how much character a place can have, and Nan is certainly not short on it. From ancient houses to peaceful temples and, of course, the promise of some truly unique culinary experiences, I knew today would be one for the books.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sister Bakery and Cafe. It's a cozy little spot known for its freshly baked goods and local Thai dishes. I opted for a traditional Thai breakfast, while some of my friends went for the Western-style pastries. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I remember back in Fiji, my grandmother used to make these incredible coconut buns – this breakfast brought back those memories, a sweet start to a day filled with discovery.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we made our way to Nan Noble House. This place is a true hidden gem. Tucked away from the bustling city center, this charming house offered a unique insight into the local culture and history. It's a well-preserved example of a traditional Lanna noble house, over a century old, once the residence of Chao Fongkham, a descendant of the former lord of Nan. The house is now occupied by her descendants and serves as a museum and learning space.

History isn't just about dates and names; it's about the stories, the struggles, and the triumphs of the people who came before us.

Walking through the house, I felt like I was stepping back in time. The architecture, the furniture, the artifacts – everything told a story of a bygone era. The host was incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable, offering us tours of the place and sharing fascinating anecdotes about the family and the house's history. I was particularly intrigued by the exhibitions of looms and basketry on the ground floor. It's amazing to see how these traditional crafts are still being practiced today.

Next on our itinerary was Wat Hua Khuang, a serene temple located behind the Nan National Museum. This small yet peaceful temple boasts a beautiful Viharn, an old square base Chedi, and a stunning wooden library. What struck me most was the tranquility of the place. Despite being in the city center, it felt like a world away from the hustle and bustle.

One interesting fact I learned was that the temple's main Buddha image was moved to the left side due to historical conflicts with Wat Phumin. Apparently, the villagers of Khum Hua Khuang and Wat Phumin had an argument because the principal Buddha images of the two temples were facing each other. To solve the problem, Wat Hua Khuang's villagers agreed to move their Buddha image to the left, after which the two villages became friendly and peaceful. It's amazing how such a simple act could bring about harmony and reconciliation.

For lunch, we ventured out to Huanam Mushroom Farm, a Northern-style restaurant that creatively uses mushrooms as the star ingredient in their dishes. The farm is nestled amidst verdant hills and lush greenery, offering stunning views of the surrounding farmland. The menu featured a variety of dishes, from mushroom pizza and soups to stir-fried options, all packed with rich, satisfying flavors.

I opted for the mushroom pizza, while my friends tried the local Northern dishes. The pizza was delicious, with a generous topping of fresh, organic mushrooms grown right on the farm. The local dishes were equally impressive, showcasing the versatility of mushrooms in Thai cuisine. We spent a good couple of hours here, savoring the food and soaking up the breathtaking views. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge after a busy morning of sightseeing. Although some online reviews mentioned potential wait times, we were lucky and got seated relatively quickly.

After lunch, we decided to do some shopping at Nan Nakara Boutique. This boutique hotel also houses a shop that sells locally-made clothes and handicrafts. I picked up a few souvenirs for Mere and Sailosi, as well as a traditional Fijian sulu for myself. It's always nice to bring back a piece of the places I visit, especially something that represents the local culture and craftsmanship.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Non Loet Rot for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Thai cuisine and cozy atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including some spicy curries, flavorful stir-fries, and of course, plenty of rice. The food was absolutely delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Nan's culinary delights.

Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by how much Nan has to offer. It's a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and nature, offering a unique and authentic Thai experience. From the ancient houses and serene temples to the delicious food and friendly locals, Nan has captured my heart in a way that few places have. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, where we plan to explore the natural beauty of Khun Sathan National Park and Si Nan National Park [Day 8 Itinerary]. I hear the views are simply breathtaking, and I can't wait to experience them for myself. And perhaps, cap off the day with a visit to Bacon Bar [Day 8 Itinerary]! Good night from Nan.

Today was a reminder that travel isn't just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with different cultures, learning about history, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the hidden charms of Nan with my friends. Vinaka vakalevu, Nan!
