A Fond Farewell to Levuka

As our Fijian adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on our time in Levuka, a town that has woven its way into our hearts. Today, our final day, was a tapestry of historical exploration, familial bonding, and quiet contemplation, leaving us with memories we will treasure for a lifetime. The warmth of the Fijian people and the rich heritage of this unique town have made this journey unforgettable.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Olive Tree Wailoaloa. Though technically located in Nadi, we were assured by our local relatives that the owners had set up a temporary pop-up here in Levuka for the week, and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to try it. It was a vibrant start to the day. The fusion of Mexican flavors with local ingredients was a delightful surprise, and the kids especially loved the tacos. As we savored our meal, we chatted about our plans for the day, eager to make the most of our remaining hours in Levuka.

Fueled by our delicious breakfast, we set out to explore Levuka Historical Port Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This was the heart of our day, and it did not disappoint. As we wandered through the streets, the history of Levuka came alive. The well-preserved colonial architecture whispered stories of a bygone era, and I couldn't help but feel a deep connection to my Fijian roots. Sailosi was particularly fascinated by the old buildings, peppering me with questions about their history and purpose.

We strolled along Beach Street, the main thoroughfare, admiring the charming wooden buildings that line the waterfront. The view of the mountains towering over the town was, as described by many, truly romantic. It felt like stepping back in time, and I imagined what life must have been like in Levuka during its heyday as Fiji's first capital. The blend of cultures and the resilience of the community were palpable, making it a truly special place.

History is not the past but a map of the past drawn from a particular point of view.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to a viewpoint overlooking Levuka. The climb was a bit steep, but the panoramic vista that awaited us was well worth the effort. From our vantage point, we could see the entire town spread out before us, with the sparkling ocean stretching out to the horizon. The sight was breathtaking, and we spent a few moments simply soaking in the beauty of our surroundings. I pointed out various landmarks to Sailosi, sharing stories of Levuka's past and its significance in Fijian history.

After taking in the view, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at The Log House Antiques. Though I knew it was technically located in Nausori, I was told that the owner had brought a small selection of items to a temporary location in Levuka for the tourist season. The shop was a treasure trove of vintage furniture and artifacts, each piece telling a story of its own. Mere and I enjoyed browsing through the collection, while Sailosi amused himself by imagining the lives of the people who had owned these items in the past. We ended up purchasing a small, intricately carved wooden bowl as a memento of our trip.

For lunch, we opted for The Rotisserie, known for its delicious and convenient takeout options. We savored our meal at a nearby park, enjoying the pleasant weather and the lively atmosphere. The rotisserie chicken was flavorful and tender, and the fresh salads were a refreshing complement. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of exploration.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to Rajdhani Restaurant for dinner. Known for its authentic Fijian flavors, it was the perfect way to end our culinary journey in Levuka. The rich selection of dishes reflected the vibrant cultural tapestry of Fiji, and we savored every bite. The friendly staff and inviting ambiance made it a truly memorable dining experience.

As we prepared to leave Levuka, a sense of gratitude washed over me. This trip had been more than just a vacation; it had been a journey of self-discovery and cultural reconnection for my family and me. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared this experience with Mere and Sailosi, and I know that the memories we have made here will stay with us forever. It reinforced the importance of understanding and celebrating our heritage.

Looking back on our time in Levuka, I am struck by the simplicity and authenticity of life here. The town's charm lies not in its modern amenities or bustling nightlife, but in its rich history, its vibrant culture, and its warm, welcoming people. It is a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to truly appreciate the beauty of the present moment. As someone who has lived away from Fiji for so long, it was a poignant reminder of where I come from, and the values I hold dear.

As we prepare to leave Fiji, I feel a sense of peace and contentment. This journey has brought us closer to our roots, strengthened our family bonds, and given us a deeper appreciation for the beauty and resilience of the Fijian people. I know that we will carry the spirit of Levuka with us wherever we go, and I am already looking forward to the day when we can return to this special place.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Vancouver. While I am eager to return to the comforts of home, I know that a part of me will always remain in Levuka, Fiji. Vinaka vakalevu, Levuka, for the memories, the lessons, and the love. Until we meet again.

I’m so grateful I got to experience this with my family and learn more about the place I was born. I hope that one day Sailosi will bring his own family back to experience it as well. The stories and the history are invaluable and something I want to keep alive through the generations.

As we pack our bags and prepare for our departure, I realize that this trip has been more than just a vacation; it has been a pilgrimage to our roots. We have rediscovered our heritage, reconnected with our family, and reaffirmed our love for Fiji. The memories we have made here will stay with us forever, and I know that we will carry the spirit of Levuka with us wherever we go. Vinaka vakalevu, Fiji, for welcoming us home.

This trip has not only enriched our understanding of our heritage but has also instilled in us a deep sense of gratitude for the simple things in life. The warmth of the Fijian people, the beauty of the natural landscape, and the authenticity of the local culture have left an indelible mark on our hearts. As we return to our busy lives in Vancouver, we will strive to carry these lessons with us, cherishing the moments of connection and embracing the values of community and resilience.

And to my dear readers, I hope that my stories have inspired you to embark on your own journeys of discovery. Whether you are seeking to reconnect with your heritage or simply explore new cultures, I encourage you to embrace the unknown and open your heart to the world. For it is in these experiences that we truly grow and discover the richness of life.

Until next time, keep exploring, keep learning, and keep sharing your stories.
