Finding Paradise: Rainforests and Island Escapes

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of lush rainforest adventures and serene island relaxation. Fiji continues to surprise and delight, offering a diverse range of experiences that truly capture the heart of this beautiful nation. It was a day of exploration, connection, and pure Fijian bliss.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bamboo Shack. While the name might suggest a simple eatery, the flavors were anything but. We fueled up with some local delicacies, setting the stage for our rainforest adventure. I opted for a strong cup of Fijian coffee, while Mere and Sailosi enjoyed some fresh tropical fruits. It's amazing how a good breakfast can set the tone for the day, filling us with energy and excitement for what was to come.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off for Colo-I-Suva Forest Park. The drive itself was scenic, offering glimpses of Suva's suburbs and the sparkling harbor. As we approached the park, the air grew cooler and the sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves. It felt like entering another world, a green sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle.

The park's name, pronounced tholo-ee-soo-va, hints at its magic. The lush rainforest is teeming with vibrant tropical plants and lively bird species. As we walked along the trails, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the towering mahogany trees and the dense foliage surrounding us. I was hoping to spot some of the 14 different bird species that call this park home, including scarlet robins and Fiji goshawks, but we weren't so lucky this time around. Maybe next time I'll bring my binoculars and try to be a bit more patient.

Sailosi was in his element, scrambling over rocks and pointing out interesting plants. He's always had a keen interest in nature, something I'm proud to encourage. Mere, ever the practical one, made sure we had enough water and sunscreen. I had forgotten the insect repellent from our essentials list, and I was starting to regret it as I could feel the mosquitos begin to bite. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!

We followed a trail that led to the natural pools, and the sight was simply breathtaking. Clear, cool water cascaded down ancient rocks, creating a series of inviting swimming holes. We couldn't resist taking a dip, and the refreshing water was the perfect antidote to the humid rainforest air. Sailosi, of course, was the first one in, splashing around with glee. Mere and I followed suit, enjoying the cool embrace of the water.

The trails were well-maintained but could be a bit slippery in places. I was glad we had worn our comfortable walking shoes. I can imagine that during the wet season, the trails would be even more challenging, but today, they were perfect for a leisurely hike. We spent a couple of hours exploring the park, swimming in the pools, and simply soaking in the natural beauty around us.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

After our rainforest adventure, we headed back towards Levuka for lunch at Tukuni Restaurant. This restaurant is known for its authentic Fijian cuisine, and it didn't disappoint. We started with kokoda, a Fijian ceviche made with fresh fish marinated in coconut cream and lime juice. It was tangy, refreshing, and bursting with flavor. For our main courses, we tried palusami, taro leaves cooked with coconut cream, and some grilled seafood. Everything was delicious, and the service was warm and welcoming. It was a true taste of Fiji, a culinary experience that reflected the island's bountiful resources and rich cultural heritage. The restaurant was adorned with local art and decor, and the staff were eager to recommend dishes based on our preferences. Tukuni Restaurant is open from 8 AM to 3 PM, so it's the perfect spot for breakfast or lunch after exploring the nearby attractions.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we embarked on our next adventure: a trip to Leleuvia Island. The boat ride to the island was an experience in itself, offering stunning views of the coastline and the sparkling ocean. As we approached Leleuvia, I was struck by its beauty. It was a small, idyllic island surrounded by pristine reefs and crystal-clear waters. The beaches were white and sandy, and the palm trees swayed gently in the breeze.

Leleuvia Island Resort is a gem. It's the kind of place where you can truly escape from it all and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Fiji. As we stepped onto the beach, we were greeted by the friendly staff, who welcomed us with warm smiles and offered us refreshing tropical drinks. We spent the afternoon swimming in the turquoise waters, snorkeling among the colorful coral reefs, and simply relaxing on the beach.

Sailosi was thrilled to try his hand at kayaking, paddling around the lagoon with boundless energy. Mere and I found a couple of hammocks and spent some time swaying in the breeze, enjoying the peace and quiet of the island. It was the perfect way to unwind after our rainforest hike and a delicious lunch. The temperature was perfect, not too hot and not too cold, and there was a slight breeze that kept the mosquitos away. The weather forecast had predicted a 5% chance of rain, but thankfully, the sun was shining brightly.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Levuka, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The sky was ablaze with color, painting a breathtaking backdrop to our boat ride. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a day filled with adventure, relaxation, and connection.

For dinner, we decided to try Raintree Restaurant & Bar, known for its tranquil ambiance and exquisite culinary offerings. It was located in the Colo-I-Suva area, so it was a bit of a drive from Levuka, but it was well worth it. The restaurant was surrounded by vibrant tropical foliage, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The menu featured a blend of Fijian flavors and international dishes, and we opted for some fresh seafood and hearty vegetarian options.

The outdoor seating area allowed us to bask in the natural beauty of Fiji while savoring our meals. The attentive staff were known for their friendly service, enhancing the overall dining experience with their warm hospitality. I tried one of their signature cocktails, while Mere enjoyed a glass of wine. Sailosi, of course, stuck with his favorite: a refreshing tropical juice. Raintree Restaurant & Bar is open from 11 AM to 9 PM, catering to both casual diners and those celebrating special occasions. It was the perfect place to reflect on our day and enjoy some quality time together as a family.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Pub Heaven Sports & Kava Bar. I was curious to experience the local nightlife and try some traditional Fijian kava. The bar had multiple screens airing sporting events, creating a lively and spirited atmosphere. I enjoyed a glass of kava, mingling with the locals and soaking in the vibrant culture. It was a great way to end the day, experiencing the local vibe and enjoying the best of Levuka's nightlife. Pub Heaven Sports & Kava Bar is open throughout the week, with extended hours on weekends, making it a perfect late-night hangout spot.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the incredible diversity of Fiji. From the lush rainforests of Colo-I-Suva to the pristine beaches of Leleuvia Island, this country offers something for everyone. It's a place where you can connect with nature, immerse yourself in culture, and simply relax and unwind. And as we approach the end of our family journey to Levuka, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we've shared and the memories we've created.

Tomorrow, on our final day, we plan to explore the Levuka Historical Port Town and take in the panoramic views from above. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at The Log House Antiques. I can't believe our trip is almost over, but I'm determined to make the most of our last day in this beautiful country.

Vinaka vakalevu, Fiji, for another unforgettable day. I am so grateful that I was able to share this adventure with Mere and Sailosi. Being able to show them where I came from and share this experience with them has been an amazing experience. It's something that I will always remember and cherish.

I know I forgot insect repellent, but hopefully I'll remember that for the next trip!
