A Day of Serenity and Reflection
Today was a beautiful blend of relaxation and cultural immersion here in Levuka. The kind of day that reminds me why I love sharing these experiences with my family and all of you. It's not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with the heart and soul of a destination.
Our day began with breakfast at the Royal Hotel.
I always appreciate starting the day in a place steeped in history. The Royal Hotel, being the oldest operating hotel in the South Pacific, has an atmosphere that transports you back in time. We enjoyed a simple breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventures. I must say, Sailosi was particularly excited about the sausages! Mere enjoyed the fresh fruit, commenting on how vibrant and flavorful everything is here.
After breakfast, we set off for Yeasin Island.
Getting there involved a short boat ride from Levuka Wharf. The sea was calm, and the views were simply breathtaking. The turquoise waters shimmered under the morning sun, and the lush greenery of Ovalau Island provided a stunning backdrop as we cruised along. The boat ride itself was an experience, with the salty air and the gentle rocking of the boat creating a sense of tranquility. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share my heritage with my family, to show them the beauty of Fiji beyond the typical tourist spots.

Experience the untouched beauty and tranquil atmosphere of Yeasin Island, a hidden gem in Fiji perfect for relaxation and adventure.
Yeasin Island turned out to be a true gem.
The beaches were pristine, with soft white sand and crystal-clear waters. It was the perfect spot for some relaxation and snorkeling. Sailosi was thrilled to explore the vibrant coral reefs, teeming with marine life. He spotted colorful fish and even a small sea turtle! Mere and I enjoyed lounging on the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The island is small and feels wonderfully secluded, far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It was a perfect place to unwind and reconnect with nature. As someone who spends most of his time coordinating community events, moments like these are invaluable for recharging and finding inner peace.
The beauty of a place lies not just in what you see, but in how it makes you feel.
After a few hours on Yeasin Island, we headed back to Levuka for lunch.
We decided to try Maya Dhaba, an Indian restaurant. Though I know it is located in Suva, I was hoping they had opened a branch here in Levuka. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. Instead, we opted for a quick bite at a local cafe, savoring some delicious Fijian pastries and tea. It was a simple meal, but it gave us a taste of the local culinary scene. The pastries were sweet and satisfying, and the tea was a refreshing pick-me-up after our morning adventure. I always make it a point to try local cuisine whenever I travel, as it's a great way to experience the culture and flavors of a place.
Our next stop was the International Tree of Peace.
This monument is more than just a tree; it's a symbol of global harmony and unity. The tree itself is surrounded by a beautifully maintained garden, creating a tranquil atmosphere perfect for contemplation and reflection. It was inspiring to see this symbol of peace in the heart of Levuka, a town with such a rich history. I took a moment to reflect on the importance of peace and understanding in our world, and I shared these thoughts with Sailosi. It's important for him to understand the significance of such symbols and to carry these values with him as he grows up. I remember learning about the importance of peace from my grandfather, who always emphasized the need for understanding and respect among all people.

Before dinner, we popped into Unique Hotshop Fiji.
I had hoped it was in Levuka, but it turned out to be in Suva. I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs and support local artisans. Although we couldn't visit the actual shop, we did find a small local market in Levuka where we purchased some handmade crafts and trinkets. It was a great way to support the local community and find some special mementos of our trip. Mere found a beautiful hand-woven basket, and Sailosi picked out a small wooden carving of a Fijian warrior. I bought a traditional sulu (Fijian sarong) as a reminder of our time here.
For dinner, we decided to try Horizon Restaurant- Koromakawa.
The restaurant is conveniently located near the Levuka pier, making it a great spot for a quick meal. The menu offered a variety of options, including Chinese and Indian dishes. I opted for a prawn curry, while Mere chose a stir-fry. Sailosi, of course, went for the pizza! The food was delicious and satisfying, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. The restaurant seemed popular with both locals and tourists, which is always a good sign. It was a perfect way to end our day, enjoying good food and good company in the heart of Levuka.
