Day 4: Island Rhythms and Rural Charms: A Day of Fijian Delights in Levuka
Discover the magic of Ovalau with a visit to Bobo's Farm, savor local flavors at Qiridua, and unwind at Ocean Island Kava Bar.
A Day of Rural and Coastal Exploration
Bula from Levuka! Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and authentic flavors of Ovalau. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and a deeper connection to the land that holds so much of our family's history. I'm excited to share the adventures we had, from exploring a local farm to enjoying the soothing traditions of kava.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Levuka Homestay. As always, the spread was incredible, a delicious mix of local fruits, homemade bread, and strong Fijian coffee. It's these simple moments, sharing a meal with family, that truly make a trip special. With full stomachs and eager hearts, we set off to Bobo's Farm. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through lush landscapes that reminded me so much of the stories my grandmother used to tell about her childhood in Fiji.

Bobo's Farm is nestled in the Rukuruku valley, and the journey there was an experience in itself. The views were simply breathtaking. When we arrived, Bobo greeted us with a warm smile and a genuine enthusiasm that was infectious. He showed us around his eco-friendly farm, where cows roamed freely and crops grew in abundance. Sailosi was particularly fascinated by the animals, and Mere enjoyed learning about the various herbal plants Bobo cultivates. Bobo shared his knowledge about the local flora and fauna, pointing out trees and plants with medicinal properties. He even showed us how to extract a frothy shampoo from a particular flower, much to Sailosi's amusement.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
The highlight of our visit to Bobo's Farm was the trek to an ancient Fijian fort. Bobo led the way, machete in hand, cutting a path through the dense jungle. The hike was challenging but rewarding, as we climbed over gnarled tree roots and past vines that held cool drinking water. Reaching the fort, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the coast. Bobo explained that the solid old trees of vesi were planted by the natives to keep the hilltop a safe haven and a vantage point to watch for approaching enemies. It was a powerful reminder of the history and resilience of the Fijian people.
After our adventurous morning, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Qiridua in Lawaki, a family-friendly restaurant known for its welcoming atmosphere and delicious cuisine. The restaurant was indeed perfect for families. The menu offered a variety of options, from local Fijian delicacies to international favorites. I opted for the Kokoda, a traditional Fijian dish of raw fish marinated in coconut cream and lime juice, while Mere enjoyed a flavorful curry. Sailosi, as usual, went for the fish and chips, which he declared were the best he'd ever had. What stood out most was the warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff treated us like family, and we felt completely at home.

Later in the afternoon, we decided to explore more of Ovalau. We drove along the coast, stopping at various viewpoints to take in the stunning scenery. The island is a mix of rugged landscapes and serene beaches, a true paradise for nature lovers. We even found a secluded spot where we could take a dip in the crystal-clear water. The water was so refreshing, and the views were simply incredible. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Ocean Island Kava Bar. I was eager to introduce my family to the traditional Fijian drink, kava. The bar had a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. We sat down, and I ordered a round of kava for everyone. Sailosi was a bit hesitant at first, but he eventually took a sip and made a face, declaring it tasted like muddy water. Mere and I, however, enjoyed the calming effects of the drink. We chatted with some locals, learning more about their lives and traditions. It was a truly immersive cultural experience.

The evening at Ocean Island Kava Bar was a perfect way to end our day. As we sipped our kava, we listened to local music and enjoyed the company of new friends. It was a reminder of the importance of community and connection, values that are deeply ingrained in Fijian culture. The gentle lighting and friendly staff created a perfect setting for both locals and tourists looking to unwind. Kava is traditionally served in a communal bowl, allowing you to engage with fellow patrons and experience the true essence of Fijian culture. The bar often features local music and vibrant conversation, enhancing your experience as you sip on this unique beverage.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Levuka Public School and the Ratu Sukuna Monument. I'm particularly excited to see the school, as education has always been a cornerstone of our family's values. And of course, a visit to Treehouse Boutique is on the cards for Mere – she's been looking forward to finding some unique Fijian crafts.
