Day 3: Conquering Choquequirao: A Day of Ancient Wonders and Breathtaking Views
Day 3 on the Choquequirao Trek: Exploring the 'Cradle of Gold', a hidden Inca city rivaling Machu Picchu, amidst stunning Andean scenery.
Echoes of the Past in the Cradle of Gold
Today was the day I had been anticipating since I first decided to embark on this solo journey: exploring the magnificent ruins of Choquequirao Trekking. After two days of challenging trekking, the promise of uncovering the secrets of this 'sister city' of Machu Picchu fueled my every step. I woke up with a sense of excitement mixed with reverence, ready to immerse myself in the history and beauty of this ancient Inca site.

The morning started early with a hearty breakfast at Sumaq II Cusco, fueling up for the day's adventures. I made sure to grab some extra coca leaves from Speedy Gonzalo Camping Equipment. The owner, always helpful, gave me a few extra tips about navigating the trails around Cerro Choquequirao. He reminded me that while the altitude wasn't as extreme as some other parts of the Andes, pacing myself was still key.

The trek to the ruins was invigorating. The air was crisp, and the views of the surrounding Andean landscape were simply majestic. It's hard to believe that places like this remain relatively untouched by mass tourism. The solitude added to the experience, allowing for a deeper connection with the history and nature surrounding me.
As I approached Choquequirao, the sheer scale of the site became apparent. Terraces stretched across the mountainside, and the stonework was a testament to the incredible engineering skills of the Incas. I spent hours wandering through the complex, imagining what life must have been like in this remote city centuries ago.
The mountains whisper stories of resilience, and in Choquequirao, I heard the echoes of a civilization that defied the odds.
One of the highlights was exploring Cerro Choquequirao. The panoramic views from the top were simply breathtaking. I could see the Apurimac River snaking through the canyon below and the snow-capped peaks in the distance. It was a moment of profound peace and gratitude, feeling so small yet so connected to something vast and timeless. I paused to think of Mere and Sailosi back home in Vancouver, wondering what they were up to, and promising myself to bring them here one day.

Lunch at Pachapapa was a delightful interlude. The traditional Peruvian cuisine was a welcome treat after hours of hiking, and the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant provided a perfect setting to relax and recharge. I savored every bite, knowing that the flavors of Peru would forever be etched in my memory.

In the afternoon, I continued my exploration of Choquequirao, delving deeper into its history and significance. I learned that Choquequirao, meaning Cradle of Gold in Quechua, was likely built by the Incas in the 15th century and may have served as a royal city or a religious center. Its strategic location offered both protection and access to vital resources.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the ruins, I found a quiet spot to reflect on the day's experiences. I was struck by the resilience and ingenuity of the Inca people, who managed to create such a remarkable city in such a challenging environment. It was a humbling reminder of the power of human potential and the importance of preserving our shared history.
For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Inka Wasi Restaurant Cusco. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, and the traditional Peruvian dishes were simply divine. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with ancient wonders and breathtaking views. The flavors of Peru danced on my tongue, each bite a reminder of the incredible journey I was on.

As I prepare for tomorrow's trek, which will take me further into the heart of the Choquequirao Trek region, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation. Tomorrow's itinerary includes a visit to the Choquequirao Trek Operator and Juchuy Coscco, promising even more opportunities for discovery and adventure. I'm also looking forward to trying out Taywa for breakfast, Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer for lunch, and Hacienda Huayoccari for dinner. And perhaps, if time allows, I'll unwind with a drink at LIMBUS RESTOBAR.
But for now, I'll rest, dreaming of the mysteries that await and feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this hidden gem of the Andes. I am also grateful for the fact that I remembered to pack my hiking boots, backpack, water purification tablets, warm clothing and camera. However, I do wish I hadn't forgotten my portable phone charger and gaiters.
The solitude of this trek has been a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Vancouver. It's given me time to reflect on my life, my family, and my purpose. I feel a renewed sense of energy and clarity, ready to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that this solo adventure on the Choquequirao Trek is an experience I'll cherish forever. I hope I can relay some of my experience to Sailosi, and perhaps even inspire him to embark on his own solo adventure when he gets older. I think he would really enjoy the thrill of seeing the condors soar through the sky.
I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with my roots and for the reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we take alone. I feel as though this is something that I needed, and something that I will carry with me when I return home. I know that Mere will be happy to see me, and that Sailosi will be excited to hear my stories.
I know that my work at the local non-profit is important, but it is nice to be able to disconnect and recharge. I feel as though I am returning home with a renewed sense of purpose and a greater appreciation for the simple things in life. Perhaps I'll even try growing some Peruvian vegetables in my garden when I get back!
I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
