Echoes of the Inca Trail

Today was a day of uncovering hidden gems and feeling the pulse of ancient Peru. The Choquequirao Trek Operator continues to surprise me with its blend of physical challenge and historical immersion. Leaving the familiar trails of yesterday, I ventured deeper into the heart of the Andes, eager to discover what secrets lay hidden in the mountains. It's a journey that not only tests my endurance but also enriches my soul, reminding me of the enduring spirit of the Inca people.

The day began, as many do on this trek, with the promise of Taywa's breakfast. Fuelled and ready, I set off with the local Choquequirao Trek Operator, keen to learn more about the land I was traversing. The crisp morning air filled my lungs as I made my way towards Juchuy Coscco, a site that whispered tales of a bygone era.

Juchuy Coscco, meaning 'Little Cusco' in Quechua, sits majestically overlooking the Sacred Valley. As I ascended, the panoramic views unfolded before me, revealing the valley's verdant tapestry and the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba Range in the distance. It was easy to see why the Incas chose this location; its strategic position offering both protection and unparalleled views. The hike itself was invigorating, a steady climb that rewarded me with each step. I found myself reflecting on the simple pleasures of life – the rhythm of my boots on the ancient paths, the warmth of the sun on my face, and the quiet companionship of the mountains.

Exploring Juchuy Coscco felt like stepping back in time. The site, though smaller than Machu Picchu, is rich in history and architectural ingenuity. I wandered through the remains of temples, plazas, and storage buildings, imagining the lives of those who once inhabited this 'Little Cusco'. The intricate stonework and the ingenious irrigation systems spoke volumes about the Incas' advanced knowledge and their deep connection to the land.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are not found in grand monuments, but in the quiet whispers of forgotten places.

I learned that Huchuy Coscco was once a royal estate or government center modeled after Cusco, serving as an important administrative and military hub. The Incas used the *mit'a* system to gather workers for the construction and maintenance of the site, reflecting their sophisticated approach to resource management. The *mitmaqkuna* policy, involving the relocation of entire ethnic groups, was also likely employed to secure labor and prevent potential resistance.

As I explored, I discovered the remains of a *kallanka*, a great hall stretching 40 meters in length, and an 800-meter irrigation channel that once supplied water to the site. The agricultural terraces, ingeniously carved into the mountainside, showcased the Incas' mastery of agriculture and their ability to adapt to the challenging Andean environment. I could almost picture the terraces bursting with crops, sustaining the community that thrived here centuries ago.

After a morning immersed in history, it was time to descend back to Cusco. For lunch, I decided to treat myself to Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer. It was a delightful experience, sampling local flavors while reflecting on the morning's discoveries. The craft beer was a welcome change, and the food provided the perfect energy boost for the afternoon ahead.

In the late afternoon, I decided to visit LIMBUS RESTOBAR, enticed by its reputation for offering the best views of Cusco. The climb up to the San Blas neighborhood was well worth it. Perched high above the city, the restobar provided a breathtaking panoramic vista. Sipping on a refreshing drink, I watched as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets of Cusco. The atmosphere was lively, with music filling the air and fellow travelers sharing stories of their adventures.

The reviews I had read before visiting Limbus Restobar were spot on. The service was impeccable, the staff friendly and attentive. I especially appreciated the attention to detail, such as the provision of heaters to ward off the evening chill. The food and drinks were equally impressive, with a creative menu that showcased local ingredients and flavors.

As the evening drew to a close, I made my way to Hacienda Huayoccari for dinner. Located in the heart of the Sacred Valley, this colonial hacienda offered a glimpse into Peru's rich cultural heritage. The hacienda has been producing white corn since the 17th century, the most prized of the Inca crops. The setting was idyllic, with lush gardens, colonial architecture, and a palpable sense of history.

Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted and offered a traditional Pisco Sour. As I sipped on the cocktail, I learned about the hacienda's history and its connection to the local community. The hacienda employs community members who have been with the family for generations, fostering a harmonious relationship. The dining room was adorned with the family's personal collection of paintings, carved wood pieces, and glazed pottery, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

The menu featured a curated selection of Peruvian homemade dishes, using ingredients grown in their own *chacra*, or Andean garden. I opted for the *aji de gallina*, a classic chicken stew, and the *lomo saltado*, a stir-fried loin dish. The flavors were authentic and comforting, reminiscent of home-cooked meals shared with family. For dessert, I indulged in the *suspiro de limeño*, a traditional dessert made with lucuma fruit, and the house special of meringue served with fresh cream and chirimoya fruit. It was the perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a stroll through the hacienda's gardens, admiring the collection of orchids and the meticulously maintained grounds. The air was filled with the scent of flowers, and the silence was broken only by the gentle rustling of leaves. It was a moment of tranquility, a chance to reflect on the day's experiences and to appreciate the beauty of the Peruvian landscape.

As I prepare for tomorrow's trek to the Sun Gate and Choquequirao Trek Peru, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation. Each day on this journey brings new challenges, new discoveries, and new perspectives. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this ancient land and to connect with its rich cultural heritage. I'm also mindful of the essentials I forgot – the portable phone charger and gaiters – and will make sure to replace them when I get a chance. As I drift off to sleep, I carry with me the echoes of the Inca Trail, the whispers of Juchuy Coscco, and the warmth of Peruvian hospitality. Tomorrow promises another day of adventure, and I can't wait to see what it holds.

I am also looking forward to tomorrow's breakfast at Inka Grill, lunch at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT and dinner at Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz. I am also hoping to find some time to visit the Handicraft Center Cusco.
