Whispers of the Past

Today was a day of discovery, a day where the ancient stones of Choquequirao Travel spoke volumes, and the Andean air carried whispers of a civilization long past. It's a privilege to walk these paths, to feel the weight of history beneath my boots, and to share this journey with you all.

I started my day with a hearty breakfast at Inti House, fueling up with some traditional Peruvian fare. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of the Andes.

After breakfast, I set off to explore Choquequirao, the 'Cradle of Gold', a site often compared to Machu Picchu but with a fraction of the crowds.

The sheer scale of Choquequirao is astounding. Terraces cascade down the mountainside, and the stone structures stand as testaments to the ingenuity of the Inca people. I spent hours wandering through the ruins, imagining what life must have been like in this remote city. The solitude amplified the experience, allowing me to connect with the history on a deeper level. I could almost hear the echoes of ancient voices in the wind.

One of the highlights was visiting the Ruinas de Choquechurco, or 'Mountain of Gold'. The name itself is evocative, hinting at the spiritual significance of this site. Perched high in the mountains, Choquechurco combines architectural marvels with agricultural terraces, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

It's believed to have been a sacred place where religious ceremonies and rituals were performed, a testament to the Inca's reverence for the mountains and natural elements.

To walk through Choquequirao is to step back in time, to feel the pulse of a civilization that thrived against all odds.

As I explored, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate stonework and the sophisticated agricultural techniques employed by the Incas. The terraces, carved into the steep mountainsides, are a testament to their ability to adapt to and thrive in challenging environments. It's a humbling reminder of the resourcefulness and resilience of the human spirit.

Lunch was a simple affair at Choquesuysuy, a small but charming local eatery. I savored a traditional Peruvian meal, enjoying the flavors of the region and the warmth of the local hospitality.

It's these small moments of connection that make traveling so rewarding.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip behind the mountains, I found myself reflecting on the day's experiences. Choquequirao is more than just a collection of ruins; it's a place of profound beauty and historical significance. It’s easy to see why Choquequirao is called the 'sister city' to Machu Picchu. The fact that it's harder to reach makes the experience all the more special.

As evening approached, I made my way to Toto's House for dinner. This restaurant is known for serving traditional Peruvian cuisine.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was delicious, providing a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and wonder.

After dinner, I decided to treat myself to a nightcap at the Black Cat Bar Cusco - Craft Cocktails & Spirits. Despite being a solo traveler, I found myself drawn to the bar's cozy and intimate vibe.

It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Sipping on a craft cocktail made with local Peruvian spirits, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. The bartender was a skilled mixologist, crafting unique and flavorful drinks that showcased the best of Peruvian ingredients. The warm atmosphere and friendly service made it a memorable experience, a perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

The weather today was mild, with daytime temperatures hovering around 18°C. November marks the beginning of the rainy season, and while I was fortunate enough to avoid any downpours today, the clouds added a dramatic backdrop to the already stunning scenery.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue exploring Choquequirao, delving deeper into its history and mysteries. I'm particularly interested in visiting the areas I missed today. Before continuing my trek, I plan to have breakfast at Kusikuy Restaurante, lunch at Inkazuela, and dinner at PERUCHO Restaurant Craft Beer. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Artesanias Maki.

As I settle in for the night, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place. Choquequirao has captured my heart, and I know that the memories of this day will stay with me long after I've left its ancient stones behind.

Until tomorrow, friends. May your own journeys be filled with wonder and discovery.

I find myself thinking about Mere and Sailosi back in Vancouver. I miss them dearly, but I know that this journey is something I need to do for myself. I hope to bring them back to Peru one day to share this experience with them. I can imagine Sailosi’s excitement as he explores these ancient ruins, his eyes wide with wonder. And Mere would appreciate the spiritual connection to the land, the sense of peace and tranquility that permeates the air here. I carry them in my heart as I continue my adventure, knowing that our shared experiences will only strengthen our bond.
