Chasing the Sun at Choquequirao

Today was a day of reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively. As I continue my solo trek through the Andes, I find myself more connected to the land and its history than I ever imagined. The solitude offers a unique opportunity for reflection, and the stunning vistas are a constant reminder of the world's incredible beauty. Today was about pushing my limits and soaking in every moment, every view, and every ancient stone.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Inka Grill in Cusco. The Peruvian-style fried rice was just what I needed to fuel up for the day's adventures. It's amazing how food can taste so much better when you know you have a challenging day ahead of you. I made sure to stock up on water and some snacks at the Handicraft Center Cusco. It's a great place to find unique, handmade treasures, and I couldn't resist picking up a small woven bracelet as a memento.

The primary goal for today was to experience the Sun Gate and, of course, the Choquequirao Trek itself. The journey to Choquequirao is not for the faint of heart. The trek is known for its steep ascents and descents, and the altitude certainly adds another layer of challenge. I’ve always enjoyed pushing myself, and this trek was the perfect way to do it. Being moderately challenging, it gave my legs a solid workout. The trail involves narrow, steep paths with many Inca-style steps. While the distance isn't overly challenging, the altitude and terrain demand respect.

The mountains are calling and I must go. - John Muir

The views along the way were simply incredible. The Apurimac Canyon is one of the deepest in the world, and the panoramic vistas from the Sun Gate were breathtaking. It felt like I could see for miles in every direction. The chance to spot an Andean Condor soaring through the sky added an extra touch of magic to the experience. The weather was kind, with cool to warm temperatures, perfect for hiking. I made sure to pack extra layers, remembering the advice I read about the unpredictable mountain weather.

Reaching the Sun Gate was a moment I won't soon forget. The Inti Punku, as it’s known in Quechua, offered a stunning viewpoint of Machu Picchu, and I could see why it was considered a control gate for those entering the Inca city. The steep steps leading up to the gate were a test, but the reward was well worth the effort. It’s believed that only the elite were allowed to enter through here, adding to the mystique of the place.

After spending some time at the Sun Gate, soaking in the views and reflecting on the history of the site, I continued on the Choquequirao Trek. The archaeological site itself is perched on a mountain slope, offering sensational views. The ruins gradually emerge from the lush, misty landscape. Exploring the grand terraces, temples, and stone structures gave me a sense of awe.

For lunch, I stopped at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT. I savored the traditional Peruvian cuisine, including the stuffed steaks and the flavorful broth. The cozy atmosphere made me feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz for dinner. The unique decor and the fusion of Peruvian and French cuisine created a memorable dining experience. I opted for the three-course menu, enjoying the French onion soup, pineapple chicken, and apple pie. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and exploration.

The Choquequirao Trek is more than just a hike; it's an immersive experience that connects you to the heart of the Andes. The solitude, the stunning landscapes, and the ancient ruins create a sense of wonder and reflection. It’s no wonder Choquequirao is called the Cradle of Gold.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to continue exploring Choquequirao. The itinerary includes Choquequirao Travel and the Ruinas de Choquechurco. I plan to have breakfast at Inti House and lunch at Choquesuysuy, and perhaps wind down the day with a drink at Black Cat Bar Cusco – Craft Cocktails & Spirits.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a moment to appreciate the night sky. The stars seemed brighter and closer here in the mountains, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. This trek is a testament to the rewards of stepping off the beaten path and embracing the unknown.

As I prepare for another day of trekking, I'm reminded of the importance of being present in the moment and appreciating the simple things in life. The mountains have a way of stripping away the unnecessary and revealing what truly matters. And as I continue on my solo adventure, I'm grateful for the opportunity to connect with nature, history, and myself.

Tomorrow, I look forward to delving deeper into the mysteries of Choquequirao and discovering more of its hidden treasures. It's a privilege to walk in the footsteps of the Incas and to experience the beauty and solitude of the Andes.

I am also happy that I didn't forget any of my TripEssentials, however, I still miss my portable phone charger and gaiters. I will make sure to buy them when I get back to Vancouver!

And with that, I bid you goodnight from the heart of the Andes. Vinaka vakalevu!
