Whispers of the Past

Today was a day of venturing deeper into the heart of Incan history, a journey that took me to ruins perched high on hillsides and offered panoramic views that stretched across the Sacred Valley. It was a day of connecting with the ingenuity and spirit of a civilization that continues to inspire awe, and a reminder of the enduring power of human connection to the land.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Hacienda Huayoccari, a place that felt like stepping into a different era. The hacienda itself is stunning, surrounded by green hills, offering a breathtaking view of the Sacred Valley. I savored traditional Peruvian flavors, surrounded by regional art and Incan artifacts. It was a delightful start to a day filled with exploration.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are not found in grand monuments, but in the quiet whispers of forgotten stones.

My first stop was the Pumamarca Ruins, also known as the 'City of the Cougars'. As I hiked through the site, I was struck by its strategic position overlooking the valley below. It’s easy to imagine how this location served as both a defensive stronghold and a center for trade in its time. Pumamarca is considered one of the first settlements of the Incas, before they spread throughout the Sacred Valley and Cusco. The well-preserved terraces gave me a glimpse into the advanced agricultural techniques of the Incas. Walking through the plazas and along the ancient water channels, I felt a tangible connection to the past. It's amazing to think that these ruins were originally built by the Wari civilization, even before the Incas. The views of the Patacancha Valley were simply breathtaking.

Next on the itinerary was Intipata, the 'Terrace of the Sun'. This Inca site is a testament to the Incas' agricultural ingenuity, with its impressive terraces designed to maximize food production in the mountainous terrain. The terraces face east, allowing them to capture sunlight throughout the day, which optimized crop growth. As I explored the terraces, I marveled at the intricate irrigation systems that the Incas developed to cultivate crops on such steep slopes. The panoramic views of the Urubamba Valley were simply stunning. Intipata is thought to have been a terraced agricultural site, its exact function is still debated among scholars. The name Intipata translates to Sun's Terrace in Quechua, which suggests that the site had a strong connection to solar worship, a common theme throughout the Inca Empire.

For lunch, I found myself at KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food in Cusco. This restaurant is a true gem, offering a delightful array of traditional Peruvian dishes with a modern twist. I opted for the Lomo Saltado, and it was an explosion of flavors. The restaurant itself had a cozy vibe, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

As the day wound down, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz. This place had a unique charm, with its vibrant décor and cozy atmosphere. The menu was a fusion of French and Peruvian cuisine, and I decided to try the pineapple chicken. It was an excellent choice, and I savored every bite. To cap off the evening, I headed to El Huarique Bar for a nightcap. The bar had a laid-back vibe, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals while sipping on a Chilcano.

As I reflect on today's journey, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore these ancient sites and immerse myself in Peruvian culture. The Choquequirao Trek has been an incredible experience so far, pushing me physically and mentally while also opening my eyes to the rich history and natural beauty of this region. I am also grateful for the opportunity to connect with the local culture through its cuisine. The meals I've had today were not just about satisfying hunger; they were about experiencing the heart and soul of Peru.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my trek, and it's a bittersweet feeling. I'm excited to finally reach Machu Picchu and witness its grandeur, but I'm also sad to see this adventure come to an end. According to the itinerary, my day will be spent exploring the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. I'm planning to have breakfast at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant, lunch at Mistura Grill & Restaurant, and a farewell dinner at Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse. I'm also hoping to squeeze in some time for souvenir shopping at Mercado Central de San Pedro. I am looking forward to sharing my final reflections on this journey.

For now, though, I'm content to bask in the memories of today, the whispers of the past echoing in my heart.
