Kyoto's Golden Greeting

After a long journey from Berlin, touching down in Osaka and then taking the train to Kyoto, I was eager to dive headfirst into the cultural heart of Japan. Today marked the beginning of my solo exploration, and I couldn't wait to experience the city's famed temples, gardens, and cuisine. It was a day filled with beauty, history, and a few delightful surprises.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kizahashi, conveniently located near Kyoto Station. The traditional Japanese breakfast set the perfect tone for the day, fueling me up for the adventures that lay ahead. The delicate flavors and artful presentation were a delightful introduction to Kyoto's culinary scene. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes for Lena back in Berlin; she'd absolutely love the subtle nuances of Japanese cuisine.

First stop: Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As I approached, the sight of the temple shimmering in the morning light was truly breathtaking. The top two floors, adorned with pure gold leaf, reflected brilliantly on the serene Mirror Pond. It felt like stepping into a postcard. The temple's history is fascinating, originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397 before being converted into a Zen Buddhist temple after his death. The care and detail in its reconstruction, especially after the devastating fire in 1950, are a testament to the enduring spirit of the Japanese people.

The Golden Pavilion isn't just a building; it's a reflection of history, resilience, and the pursuit of beauty.

Walking around the grounds, I took my time to appreciate the meticulously designed Muromachi-period garden. The way the sunlight played on the golden facade, the gentle breeze rustling through the pines, and the stillness of the pond created a sense of tranquility that washed over me. I even tossed a coin at one of the statues, hoping for a bit of good luck on my travels. I thought of Sofia, my daughter, and how her eyes would light up at the sight of such a dazzling structure. I imagined bringing her here someday, sharing the magic of this place with her.

Next on the itinerary was the Kyoto Imperial Palace, a place steeped in history and imperial grandeur. I've always been fascinated by Japanese history, especially the Meiji Restoration, so walking through the palace grounds felt like stepping back in time. The palace served as the residence of Japan's emperors from 794 until 1869, when the capital was moved to Tokyo. The current buildings, mostly rebuilt in 1855, showcase the elegant architectural styles of the Heian Period.

The Shishinden (Hall for State Ceremonies) was particularly impressive, with its traditional Heian-period design and historical significance. It was here that emperors held important ceremonies, including enthronement rituals. I could almost picture Emperor Meiji, Taisho, and Showa standing in this very hall. The intricate details of the architecture, from the round wooden pillars to the cypress-bark roofs, were a testament to the craftsmanship and artistry of the time. I also explored the Pond Garden and Inner Garden, admiring the stone lanterns and the carefully manicured landscapes. It was a perfect place for a quiet stroll, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Adjacent to the Imperial Palace lies the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a sprawling green space that once housed the residences of court nobles. After the capital moved to Tokyo, Emperor Meiji transformed the area into a public garden, preserving the landscape and providing a tranquil escape for the city's residents. Wandering through the garden, I appreciated the wide orderly roads, the paths winding through trees, and the views of the surrounding mountains. It felt like a world away from the urban landscape, a peaceful oasis in the heart of Kyoto. I learned that the garden is particularly beautiful in the springtime, with over 1,100 cherry trees in bloom. Though it's still early March, I could see hints of the blossoms starting to emerge, promising a spectacular display in the coming weeks. I made a mental note to return later in my trip to witness the full bloom.

For lunch, I ventured to Hafuu, a renowned restaurant specializing in exquisite beef dishes. Knowing my love for exploring Berlin's diverse culinary scene, Lena had insisted I try it. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly attentive. I decided on the Wagyu steak, cooked medium-rare to perfection. The first bite was heavenly – the meat was tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. It was an experience that truly lived up to the hype. I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and artistry that went into creating such a culinary masterpiece. I thought about how much Lena would enjoy this place; we'll definitely have to come back here together someday.

As evening approached, I made my way to Gion, Kyoto's geisha district, for dinner at Gion Nanba. Tucked away in a quiet alley, this Michelin-starred kaiseki restaurant offered a traditional multi-course dining experience. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with seasonal flavors. From the delicate sashimi to the savory simmered dishes, every course was a delight to the senses. The chef's attention to detail and the impeccable service made for a truly memorable meal. It was a perfect way to immerse myself in the refined elegance of Kyoto's culinary traditions.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit L'Escamoteur, a quirky and highly-rated bar known for its creative cocktails and magical atmosphere. Finding it was an adventure in itself, tucked away in one of Kyoto's many narrow streets. The bar was small and intimate, with a whimsical decor that felt like stepping into another world. The bartender, a charismatic Frenchman, crafted unique and delicious cocktails while performing magic tricks and engaging in lively conversation. It was a fun and memorable way to end my first day in Kyoto. I chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter over expertly crafted drinks. The bar's welcoming atmosphere made me feel right at home, even in a foreign land.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, and Yasaka Shrine. I'm particularly excited to wander through the historic streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, soaking in the traditional atmosphere and discovering hidden gems. I also plan to visit Maiko Antiques Kyoto, hoping to find a unique souvenir to bring back home to Berlin. For dinner, I've made a reservation at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, eager to experience another culinary delight. Before that, I'm planning to have lunch at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura.

Kyoto has already captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Goodnight from Kyoto!
