Santa Croce and Market Magic
Today was a day steeped in Florentine history and charm. We dove headfirst into the artistic heart of the city, exploring magnificent architecture and bustling markets. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling with Isabela and Mateus – their enthusiasm is infectious!
Our day began, as usual, with a delightful breakfast at Logò Ristorante. I’m starting to feel like a local with my morning cappuccino! After fueling up, we set off to the Basilica di Santa Croce. I have been looking forward to seeing this place since we started planning our trip months ago.
As a historical building restoration consultant, I was particularly eager to examine the Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence. From the moment we stepped inside, I was captivated by the sheer scale and the palpable sense of history within those walls. The basilica, the largest Franciscan church in the world, is an architectural marvel, showcasing a blend of Gothic design and Florentine artistry. The light streaming through the tall, narrow stained-glass windows created an ethereal glow, highlighting the intricate details of the structure.

The Basilica di Santa Croce is not just a church; it's a pantheon of Italian greats. To stand before the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli was a humbling experience. I found myself reflecting on their contributions to art, science, and philosophy, and how their legacies continue to shape our world. Mateus was fascinated by Michelangelo's tomb, asking endless questions about his sculptures and paintings. It was a great opportunity to introduce him to the Renaissance and its impact on art and culture.
The frescoes by Giotto in the Bardi and Peruzzi Chapels were a particular highlight for me. The vibrant colors and the expressive figures told stories that transcended time. I spent a considerable amount of time studying the techniques used by Giotto, marveling at his ability to create such lifelike scenes. Isabela, with her keen eye for detail, pointed out the subtle nuances in the frescoes, enhancing my appreciation for the artwork. I was captivated by the sheer scale and the palpable sense of history within those walls. Walking through the Basilica, I couldn't help but admire the ornate details of the 16 chapels, each decorated with unique splendor. The Basilica has a long history, dating back to the 13th century when the first Franciscan friars built a small oratory on the site. The basilica we see today was constructed around 1294, replacing the earlier building and funded by the city's wealthiest families. Over the centuries, Santa Croce has undergone several renovations and reconstructions, including a significant intervention in the 15th century following a massive flood. Despite facing adversities such as the collapse of the bell tower and damage from the Arno River flood in 1966, the basilica has been restored to its old splendor and remains an important cultural center in Florence.
Visiting Santa Croce is more than just seeing a church; it's about connecting with the souls of those who shaped history.
After immersing ourselves in the solemn atmosphere of Santa Croce, we decided to lighten the mood with a visit to the Mercato del Porcellino. This bustling market is a complete contrast to the reverent silence of the Basilica, and it was exactly what we needed to shake off the historical weight. The market, also known as the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, has a fascinating history. Constructed in the mid-16th century by Giovanni Battista del Tasso, it was initially intended for the sale of silk and luxury goods. By the 19th century, it had evolved into a marketplace for straw hats, leather goods, and souvenirs. Today, it remains a vibrant tourist market, offering a variety of leather products and souvenirs.

The main attraction, of course, is the Fontana del Porcellino, a bronze statue of a wild boar. Legend has it that rubbing the boar's nose brings good luck, and if you place a coin in its mouth and it falls into the grate below, your wish will come true. Mateus was particularly taken with this tradition, and he insisted on trying it several times. After a few attempts, his coin finally fell through, and his excitement was palpable. I have to admit, I rubbed the boar’s nose too – can’t hurt to have a little extra luck, right?
The market itself was a feast for the senses. The air was filled with the sounds of vendors hawking their wares, the smells of leather and spices, and the sight of colorful scarves and bags. Isabela, ever the savvy shopper, haggled with a vendor over a beautiful leather handbag. I picked up a few souvenirs for friends back home, and Mateus chose a small leather wallet with a picture of the Porcellino on it.
For lunch, we indulged in the famous sandwiches at All’Antico Vinaio. The line was long, but the sandwiches were well worth the wait. The crusty bread, the flavorful meats and cheeses, and the fresh vegetables created a symphony of flavors in my mouth. We found a small piazza nearby and enjoyed our sandwiches while people-watching. It was the perfect way to refuel after a busy morning.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to take a break from sightseeing and relax at THE ARTS INN. This bar, known for its unique blend of art and mixology, was the perfect place to unwind. The cozy atmosphere and the eclectic art pieces on the walls created a vibrant backdrop for a memorable experience. I ordered a Negroni, while Isabela opted for a glass of Tuscan wine. Mateus, of course, had a non-alcoholic fruit punch. The patient mixologists crafted our drinks with care, and we sipped them slowly, enjoying the ambiance and the conversation.

Dinner tonight was at Ristorante Oliviero 1962, a place recommended by the hotel concierge. The restaurant, known for its traditional Florentine cuisine, did not disappoint. We started with a selection of Tuscan appetizers, followed by the bistecca alla fiorentina, cooked to perfection. Mateus surprised us all by devouring his portion of the steak – I guess all that sightseeing had worked up an appetite!

As I sit here writing this, reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Florence has a way of captivating you, of drawing you into its rich history and vibrant culture. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Giardino Bardini and Villa Bardini, hoping to experience more of Florence's beauty. I’m particularly looking forward to the gardens; I've heard the views of the city from there are breathtaking. And Isabela is already planning a shopping trip to Boutique Nadine – she has her eye on a silk scarf she saw in a window display. It’s hard to believe we only have a few days left in this magical city. I want to soak up every last drop of its beauty and charm. Good night from Florence!
