Gardens in the Sky: A Florentine Daydream

Today was a day of discovering Florence from above, a perspective that always adds a special dimension to any city. We traded the well-trodden paths for panoramic vistas and hidden corners, creating memories that I know will stay with us long after we've left this beautiful city. It's days like these that make traveling with family so rewarding.

Our morning started with a delightful breakfast at Il Gatto e la Volpe | Florence. The restaurant had a rustic, charming atmosphere, making us feel instantly warm and cozy. Mateus, of course, opted for a simple pasta dish, while Isabela and I enjoyed some traditional Tuscan pastries. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Giardino Bardini and Villa Bardini.

The walk to Giardino Bardini was a bit of a climb, but the promise of breathtaking views kept us motivated. The garden itself is a treasure, a blend of manicured landscapes and natural beauty. It's divided into three distinct sections: a baroque staircase, an English garden, and a farming area with olive trees. As a historical building restoration consultant, I was particularly drawn to the way the garden incorporated elements of different eras and styles. Isabela was in her element, snapping photos of the vibrant flowers and the stunning cityscape. Mateus, ever the explorer, was fascinated by the fountains and the hidden pathways.

The baroque staircase was impressive, fringed with irises that added a splash of color to the winter landscape. Climbing the steps, we were rewarded with an expansive view of Florence, the Duomo standing proud against the skyline. I took a moment to appreciate the architectural marvels spread out before us, recognizing the intricate details that I often work to preserve in my own profession. The chill in the air was a reminder that it was January, but the sun was shining, making the experience all the more enjoyable.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Next, we wandered through the English garden, a tranquil space with winding paths and lush greenery. It was a welcome contrast to the more formal baroque section. Mateus enjoyed running around the open spaces, while Isabela and I took a leisurely stroll, admiring the Channel of the Dragon, a unique water feature that added to the garden's charm. The farming area, with its medieval hillside terraces planted with olive trees, offered a glimpse into Florence's agricultural past. It was interesting to see how the garden incorporated elements of both nature and cultivation.

After exploring the gardens, we ventured into Villa Bardini, which is located at the highest point of the Giardino Bardini. We were fortunate to catch the OltreCittà. Utopia and Reality. From Le Corbusier to Gerhard Richter exhibition. As someone passionate about architecture, I found the exhibit to be particularly engaging, showcasing interpretations of urban spaces by renowned artists. Isabela, with her artistic eye, appreciated the diverse range of mediums on display, from painting to photography to sculpture. The exhibition was a thought-provoking exploration of the city as a living organism, a theme that resonated with me given my work in historical building restoration.

Lunch was at Ristorante Romantico il Paiolo, a charming Tuscan restaurant known for its romantic atmosphere. We started with bruschetta and octopus, which were incredibly flavorful. For the main course, I had the truffle steak, cooked to perfection, while Isabela opted for the handmade spaghetti with tomato sauce. Mateus, as always, chose gnocchi, which he declared was the best he'd ever had. The service was excellent, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after a morning of exploring.

In the afternoon, we decided to do a little shopping. Isabela had heard about Boutique Nadine, a local boutique known for its unique vintage pieces and support for emerging designers. We found the boutique without much trouble, and Isabela was immediately drawn to the carefully curated collection of clothing and accessories. Mateus, surprisingly, also found a few items that caught his eye, including a vintage leather jacket that he insisted on trying on. The staff was incredibly helpful, offering styling tips and making us feel welcome. I appreciated the boutique's commitment to supporting local talent and preserving vintage fashion.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Saporium Firenze for dinner. This Michelin-starred restaurant promised a contemporary Tuscan culinary experience. The restaurant had a leafy ambiance, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a series of innovative dishes that showcased the best of Tuscan cuisine. Each course was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The service was impeccable, and the sommelier paired each dish with a complementary wine. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a perfect ending to a day of Florentine adventures.

Tomorrow, we're planning a day trip to Fiesole, a charming town located in the hills above Florence. We'll be visiting the Convent of San Domenico and exploring the town's historic center. I'm looking forward to experiencing a different side of Tuscany, away from the hustle and bustle of Florence. Before heading back to the hotel, we will stop at Mad - Souls & Spirits.

Tonight, as I sit here reflecting on the day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Florence has a way of captivating the senses, of transporting you to another time and place. It's a city that rewards exploration, that reveals its treasures to those who take the time to wander and discover. And as I look forward to tomorrow's adventure, I know that the memories we're creating here will last a lifetime.

“Florence is a destination that never ceases to inspire, offering a blend of art, history, and culinary delights that create unforgettable family memories.”
