Fiesole: A Breath of Fresh Air

Today, we ventured beyond the familiar streets of Florence, seeking a change of scenery and a deeper connection with the region's history. Our destination was Fiesole, a charming hilltop town with Etruscan roots and stunning panoramic views. It was a day filled with exploration, contemplation, and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of Tuscany, a welcome change from the bustling city center.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Casa del Vin Santo. The warm and inviting atmosphere was the perfect start to our Fiesole adventure. Isabela and I shared a baked goat cheese with honey, while Mateus devoured some dough balls. The reviews I read online were spot on – the food was delicious, the service was friendly and efficient, and it set a positive tone for the day ahead. We fueled up, knowing we had a climb ahead of us, both literally and figuratively, as we ascended to Fiesole. It was a great way to start the day, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy breakfast spot in Florence.

The bus ride to Fiesole was an experience in itself. As the bus wound its way up the hills, the cityscape of Florence gradually unfolded before us. The iconic Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and Ponte Vecchio became smaller and more picturesque with every turn. Mateus was particularly excited, pointing out landmarks he recognized from our previous days of exploration. It was a reminder of how much we had already seen and done, and a promise of more to come.

Reaching Fiesole felt like stepping back in time. The town exudes a sense of tranquility and history, with its ancient stone buildings and narrow, winding streets. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome contrast to the city's more congested atmosphere. Our first stop was the Convent of San Domenico, a Dominican convent with roots stretching back to the early 15th century. As a historical building restoration consultant, I was particularly drawn to the convent's architecture and its rich history.

The Convent of San Domenico, founded in the early 1400s, is a testament to the enduring power of faith and art. The quiet cloisters and simple church provided a serene space for contemplation, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Florence. It was fascinating to learn that the convent had been home to Fra Angelico, the renowned Renaissance painter. Knowing that he had walked these same halls and created masterpieces within these walls added a layer of reverence to the experience. The convent is also known for having housed Antoninus Pierozzi, who would become the Archbishop of Florence. The architecture reflected a blend of medieval austerity and Renaissance ideals, a reminder of the evolving artistic and spiritual landscape of the time. The Convent of San Domenico is not just a historical site; it's a living testament to the power of faith, art, and community.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After soaking in the tranquility of the convent, we wandered through the charming streets of Fiesole, eventually finding ourselves at Ristorante Belcore for lunch. The reviews I had read promised a delightful culinary experience, and Belcore did not disappoint. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, the service impeccable, and the food was simply divine. Isabela and I shared a pasta dish with truffles, while Mateus opted for a classic Margherita pizza. Every bite was a burst of flavor, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. It was the perfect midday indulgence, a chance to recharge before continuing our exploration of Fiesole.

Following lunch, we strolled through Fiesole's main square, Piazza Mino, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the architecture. The square was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the beautiful winter day. Mateus chased pigeons while Isabela and I browsed the local shops, picking up a few souvenirs to remind us of our visit. It was a simple pleasure, a moment of connection with the town and its people.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Florence. The view was simply breathtaking. The entire city stretched out before us, bathed in the soft, golden light of the setting sun. The Duomo stood tall and majestic, a symbol of Florence's artistic and cultural heritage. The Arno River snaked its way through the city, reflecting the colors of the sky. It was a moment of pure beauty, a reminder of why we had come to Florence in the first place. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of the scene, but knew that no image could truly do it justice. It was a view to be experienced, to be felt, to be etched into our memories forever.

Before heading back to Florence, we decided to indulge in a pre-dinner drink at Mad - Souls & Spirits. It was a recommendation from a fellow travel blogger, who had praised the bar's creative cocktails and cool atmosphere. Tucked away in the Oltrarno neighborhood, Mad - Souls & Spirits was a welcome surprise. The bartenders were passionate about their craft, mixing up unique and flavorful drinks with a touch of flair. I opted for a Negroni, while Isabela tried a local craft beer. The atmosphere was lively and unpretentious, a perfect way to end our day in Fiesole. It was a reminder that Florence has so much more to offer than just its historical landmarks; it's also a city with a vibrant and innovative cocktail scene.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a special meal at La Giostra. The restaurant had been recommended by several friends, who had raved about its romantic atmosphere and delicious Tuscan cuisine. Located near the city center, La Giostra exuded an air of elegance and charm. The candlelit tables, white linens, and sparkling wine glasses created a romantic ambiance, while the attentive service made us feel like royalty. The owner, Prince Dimitri, was a gracious host, personally greeting each guest and ensuring that everyone had a memorable experience. We started with the complimentary platter of Tuscan appetizers, sampling local cheeses, cured meats, and crostini. For our main courses, Isabela and I shared the Florentine steak, while Mateus devoured a plate of homemade ravioli. Every dish was a culinary masterpiece, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. The wine list was extensive, featuring a wide selection of Tuscan wines to complement the meal. It was an unforgettable dining experience, a perfect way to celebrate our time in Florence.

As we walked back to Ponte Vecchio Suites & Spa, the city was alive with energy. The streets were filled with people, laughter, and music. The air was filled with the aroma of Tuscan cuisine. It was a reminder that Florence is a city that never sleeps, a place where beauty and culture can be found around every corner.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Florence's scientific heritage with visits to the Museo Galileo and the Leonardo da Vinci Interactive Museum. We're also planning a stop at the Scuola del Cuoio S.r.l. to admire the craftsmanship of Florentine leather goods. It promises to be another day filled with discovery and wonder, a testament to the endless treasures that Florence has to offer.

Our day in Fiesole was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about experiencing new things, connecting with different cultures, and creating lasting memories. It was a day that enriched our understanding of Tuscany and deepened our appreciation for the beauty of Italy.
