Day 4: A Step Back in Time: Exploring Matera's Ancient Roots
Discover Matera's Neolithic village, breathtaking viewpoints, and historic cave dwellings on a captivating family adventure through Italy.
Echoes of the Past in Matera
Today was a day of delving deep into Matera's captivating past, a journey that took us from ancient Neolithic settlements to breathtaking viewpoints and the heart of the Sassi. It’s incredible to think that this area has been inhabited for thousands of years, and today, I felt like we were walking through the very origins of civilization. Mateus was especially excited, imagining what life was like for the people who lived here so long ago.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Regiacorte - L’eccellenza del Territorio. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering an excellent start to the day with traditional dishes made from local ingredients. I enjoyed a strong espresso while Isabela and Mateus savored some freshly baked pastries. The friendly staff made us feel right at home, and the cozy atmosphere was the perfect way to prepare for our day of exploration. According to one review, the staff has a mission to make every guest feel welcome, providing impeccable service and simple but refined cuisine.
Fueled and ready, we set off to explore the Villaggio Neolitico. This Neolithic village offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Matera’s earliest inhabitants. Walking through the remnants of this ancient settlement, it was humbling to imagine the people who first called this land home. Mateus was particularly intrigued by the reconstructed huts, peppering me with questions about how they lived and what tools they used. It's amazing to see the remnants of the first entrenched village discovered by Ridola. The area is an elevated plateau that rises above the rocky massif facing the Civita to the east, the old historic center of Matera, on the other side of the ravine. The trenches were discovered by chance, but Ridola almost immediately realized that it was something exceptional.

The beauty of Matera lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in the echoes of humanity that resonate through its ancient stones.
Next on our itinerary was the Belvedere di Piazza Giovanni Pascoli. This viewpoint offered a breathtaking panorama of Matera and the surrounding landscape. From here, we could see the entire expanse of the Sassi, the ancient cave dwellings that make Matera so unique. The view was especially stunning in the soft morning light, casting long shadows across the landscape. I took several photos, trying to capture the beauty of this ancient city. Isabela pointed out various landmarks, while Mateus was simply content to gaze at the incredible vista. The Belvedere is described as a wonderful panoramic terrace that offers a charming view of the heart of the old town and the ancient houses. It’s a must-stop for anyone who visits, located between the Matera Cathedral and the archaeological area of Sasso Caveoso.

After soaking in the views, we made our way to the Sasso Caveoso. This area is one of the two main districts that make up the historic center of Matera. As we wandered through the narrow, winding streets, it felt like stepping back in time. The cave dwellings, carved into the rock, were a testament to human ingenuity and resilience. Many of the caves are now homes, hotels, restaurants and bars. We explored some of the uninhabited caves, trying to imagine what life was like for the families who once lived here. The Sasso Caveoso is full of history and natural beauty, and it’s easy to immerse yourself in a unique atmosphere surrounded by enchanting caves and ancient buildings. The houses are dug into the tuff and built one on top of the other.

For lunch, we chose Ristorante Soul Kitchen - Cucina per l' Anima. This restaurant promised a culinary experience that connects you with the land, and it certainly delivered. We started with the chef's antipasto, a selection of local cheeses, cured meats, and vegetables. For our main courses, Isabela and I opted for traditional Matera pasta dishes, while Mateus chose a simple but delicious plate of ravioli. The food was excellent, and the cozy atmosphere made it a memorable meal. The restaurant is located in the center of Matera, among the stones, and offers cuisine with typical local products.
