Immersing Ourselves in Matera's Soul

Today was a day dedicated to delving deeper into the soul of Matera, exploring its history, art, and traditions through its museums and local crafts. It was a journey of discovery, not just for me, but for Isabela and Mateus as well, as we soaked in the unique atmosphere of this ancient city.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at La Finestra sui Sassi - Kappador. The view from there was simply breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the Sassi bathed in the morning light. I savored a cappuccino while Mateus enjoyed a pastry, and Isabela admired the scenery. The food was delicious, setting a positive tone for the day ahead.

After breakfast, we made our way to the MOOM / Matera Olive Oil Museum. As someone who appreciates history, especially when it intersects with everyday life, I found this museum fascinating. It's a small, family-run establishment housed in an ancient underground oil mill. The museum showcased the traditional methods of olive oil production, which were once vital to the region. Mateus was particularly intrigued by the old olive press, imagining the donkeys that used to power the machinery. I learned that olive oil was primarily used for lamp oil rather than consumption back then. The dedication and passion of the owners were evident, and it was a truly immersive experience.

Next on our itinerary was the Palazzo Lanfranchi, home to the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata. The palazzo itself is a stunning example of 17th-century architecture, and its grandeur set the stage for the art within. The museum is divided into sections, including Sacred Art, collections, and Contemporary Art. I was particularly drawn to the religious works from the 12th to 18th centuries and the paintings by local mannerists. Isabela, with her background as a teacher, appreciated the opportunity to expose Mateus to such a rich collection of art and history. The building has been renovated recently and includes multimedia exhibits.

After immersing ourselves in art, we decided to take a break for lunch. We chose Il Terrazzino, a restaurant known for its stunning views and local cuisine. We shared a delightful meal of Matera bread, pasta and grilled fish, all while enjoying the beautiful scenery. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming.

Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring the Museo Nazionale di Matera - Ex Ospedale San Rocco. This museum is housed in a former hospital and often features temporary exhibitions. The building itself has a rich history, and the exhibits provided a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the region.

Before dinner, we took some time to explore IDEAS - Arts and crafts. I always enjoy discovering local artisans and their creations, and this shop was a treasure trove of unique finds. Isabela purchased a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, while Mateus chose a small wooden toy. Supporting local businesses is important to us, and it's a way to take a piece of Matera home with us.

For our final meal of the day, we dined at Dimora Ulmo ristorante. This restaurant is located in the Sasso Caveoso, within a beautifully renovated 17th-century palace. The ambiance was elegant, and the food was exquisite. The menu featured local ingredients prepared with a modern twist. I particularly enjoyed the appetizer with tempura codfish. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on all that we had experienced. Matera is a city that truly captivates the senses and nourishes the soul. The blend of history, art, and local traditions makes it a unique destination. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Villaggio Neolitico, Belvedere di Piazza Giovanni Pascoli, and Sasso Caveoso. I am eager to continue our journey of discovery and uncover even more of Matera's hidden gems. Perhaps we'll stop by AREA 8 for a nightcap after a long day of exploring. Until then, buona notte from Matera!

During our travels, I realized I had forgotten to pack a first aid kit. I´ll be sure to purchase one tomorrow.
