Whispers of the Past

Today was a journey back in time, a day where every stone and fresco whispered stories of Matera's ancient soul. It’s hard to believe that people have lived and thrived in this landscape for millennia. The way the city blends into the natural surroundings is simply breathtaking, and I’m so glad I got to share this with Isabela and Mateus.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Il Fiore del Latte. The aroma of freshly baked goods and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. Mateus, of course, opted for a sweet pastry, while Isabela and I enjoyed some delicious sandwiches. It's amazing how a simple meal can become a cherished memory when enjoyed in such a beautiful setting. I made a mental note to try and recreate the panini with pesto and burrata that Isabela had back home in Kingston. It was the perfect way to fuel up before heading out to explore the rugged landscapes of Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana.

The park itself is a vast expanse of natural beauty, offering panoramic views of Matera and the surrounding countryside. As we hiked along the trails, I couldn't help but marvel at the unique rock formations and the sense of timelessness that permeated the air. Mateus, ever the curious explorer, was fascinated by the various plants and insects we encountered along the way. He kept asking questions about the different rock layers, and I did my best to explain the geological history of the area in a way that a ten-year-old could understand. Isabela, with her keen eye for photography, captured stunning shots of the landscape, promising to add them to our growing collection of travel memories. Although we forgot our umbrella, the sun was shining brightly, making for a perfect day of hiking. It was a welcome change from the often-unpredictable weather of Kingston.

To walk through Matera is to walk through the layers of human history, each stone a testament to resilience and adaptation.

Next on our itinerary was the Crypt of Original Sin. This ancient cave church, often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of Rupestrian Art,” is a true hidden gem. The frescoes inside, dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries, are remarkably well-preserved and offer a fascinating glimpse into the religious art of the time. As someone who works with historical buildings, I was particularly impressed by the intricate details and the vibrant colors of the paintings. It's humbling to think about the artists who created these masterpieces so many centuries ago, and the dedication it must have taken to work in such a remote and challenging environment. Mateus was surprisingly engaged, asking about the stories depicted in the frescoes and the techniques used to create them. It's moments like these that make traveling with family so rewarding – seeing the world through my son’s curious eyes. I was glad we took the time to book a guided tour, as the guide was incredibly knowledgeable and brought the history of the crypt to life.

After the crypt, we made our way to the Church of Saint Mary of Idris. Perched atop a rocky outcrop, this church offers breathtaking views of the Sasso Caveoso. The climb up was a bit steep, but the panoramic vista from the top was well worth the effort. The church itself is a fascinating blend of architectural styles, with a simple stone facade concealing a series of cave chapels adorned with Byzantine-style frescoes. As we explored the various chambers, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for the generations of people who had worshipped in this sacred space. Isabela lit a candle, and we took a moment of silence to appreciate the beauty and tranquility of our surroundings. The church is connected to the crypt of San Giovanni in Monterrone through a tunnel, and in the crypt there are numerous and beautiful frescoes that date back over a time span ranging from the twelfth to the seventeenth century.

For dinner, we had reservations at Baccanti, a restaurant known for its modern take on traditional Lucanian cuisine. The atmosphere was elegant and inviting, and the service was impeccable. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by homemade pasta dishes that were bursting with flavor. I opted for the lamb, while Isabela chose the seafood risotto. Mateus, predictably, ordered a simple pasta with tomato sauce, which he devoured with gusto. The wine list was extensive, and our server recommended a local red that paired perfectly with our meal. I appreciated the restaurant's commitment to using fresh, seasonal ingredients, and the innovative way they presented classic dishes. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Matera's ancient wonders.

Before heading back to Hydria Residence, we decided to stop by Monkey Drink House for a nightcap. This cozy bar had a lively atmosphere and a creative cocktail menu. I ordered a Negroni, while Isabela opted for a glass of local wine. Mateus, of course, stuck with sparkling water. As we sipped our drinks, we listened to the music and watched the locals mingle and chat. It was a fun and relaxed way to experience Matera's nightlife, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Matera's cultural heritage with visits to the MOOM (Matera Olive Oil Museum), Palazzo Lanfranchi, and the Museo Nazionale di Matera - Ex Ospedale San Rocco. I'm particularly excited about the olive oil museum, as I've always been fascinated by the process of olive oil production and the role it plays in Italian cuisine. We'll also be having breakfast at La Finestra sui Sassi - Kappador, lunch at Il Terrazzino, and dinner at Dimora Ulmo ristorante. And, of course, we'll be sure to check out IDEAS - Arts and crafts for some unique souvenirs to bring back home to Kingston. I have a feeling tomorrow will be just as enriching and memorable as today.

Today was more than just a day of sightseeing; it was a chance to connect with the past, appreciate the present, and create lasting memories with my loved ones. As we walked back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Matera. And even though we forgot our first aid kit, thankfully, we didn't need it. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel and explore new cultures – and why I started this blog in the first place. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
