Echoes of the Past in Matera

Today was a deep dive into the historical and cultural heart of Matera. From exploring ancient palazzos to venturing into underground cities and finding peace in beautiful churches, every moment felt like stepping back in time. Isabela, Mateus, and I soaked in the atmosphere, creating memories that I know will last a lifetime.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Burro Salato - Cucina Francese e Lucana a Matera. The fusion of French and Lucanian cuisine was a unique and delicious way to start the morning. I opted for one of their galettes, while Isabela enjoyed a traditional Lucanian pastry. Mateus, of course, went straight for a crêpe filled with Nutella. It’s become a bit of a tradition on our travels for him to sample the local sweets, and he gives his reviews with the seriousness of a seasoned food critic. It reminded me of the bistrôs back in Ouro Preto, blending familiar flavors with local ingredients. After breakfast, we were ready to explore the city’s rich history and hidden gems.

Our first stop was the Palazzo del Sedile. This building is a true representation of Matera's cultural and administrative importance. Originally built in 1575 and renovated in Rococo style in 1759, it served as the city's Town Hall until 1944. Now, it is home to the Conservatory of Music, named after the Matera musician Egidio Romualdo Duni. The statues on the façade, symbolizing justice, fortitude, moderation, and prudence, really struck me. They seemed to watch over the city, embodying the values that have shaped Matera through the centuries. The Palazzo del Sedile stands in Piazza del Sedile, which has been the cultural hub of Matera since the 14th century. The square was previously called Piazza Maggiore and was home to markets, shops, and warehouses. The Palazzo del Sedile was the meeting place for the self-organized assembly of citizens that used to govern the city. Exploring the palazzo, I couldn't help but think about the countless decisions made within its walls, decisions that shaped the Matera we see today. The blend of architectural styles, from the Renaissance foundation to the Baroque additions, tells a story of continuous evolution and adaptation. I could almost hear the echoes of lively debates and the bustle of civic life that once filled these halls.

History is not just a collection of dates and facts; it's a living narrative that shapes who we are.

Next on our itinerary was the mysterious Ipogeo MateraSum. This underground city is a fascinating glimpse into Matera's past. Descending into the depths, we discovered a hidden world of houses, streets, cisterns, and places of worship. The audio-guided tour provided a rich narrative, taking us on a journey from the city's origins to the present day. It was incredible to imagine the lives of those who once lived and worked in these subterranean spaces. The ingenuity and resourcefulness of the early inhabitants were truly remarkable. Mateus was captivated by the stories of how the underground city functioned, especially the intricate water systems and the ways in which people adapted to life below the surface. I was particularly impressed by the scale of the Ipogeo. The fact that an entire city existed beneath the city we had been walking through was mind-boggling. It felt like uncovering a secret, a hidden layer of Matera's identity. The cool, damp air added to the sense of mystery, making the experience even more immersive.

After emerging from the depths of Ipogeo MateraSum, we sought a place for lunch and found Le Bubbole. This restaurant offered a delightful menu of local dishes with a modern twist. I decided to try the baccalà (codfish) with peperone crusco (crispy bell pepper), while Isabela chose the handmade pasta with chickpeas and mussels. Mateus, ever adventurous, opted for the roasted lamb. Each dish was a celebration of local ingredients and flavors, expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The restaurant itself had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect spot to relax and recharge after our underground adventure. The chef, Gabriele Marino, clearly has a passion for showcasing the culinary traditions of Basilicata, and we thoroughly enjoyed every bite.

Our final stop of the day was the Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi. Situated on the vibrant Piazza San Francesco, this church boasts a stunning Baroque facade. Originally built in the 13th century, it has undergone numerous transformations, resulting in its current Baroque style. Inside, the church houses beautiful frescoes and a serene atmosphere, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. The high altar and the side chapels were adorned with intricate details, showcasing the artistic and religious devotion of past generations. As I sat in one of the pews, I reflected on the day’s explorations. From the Palazzo del Sedile to the Ipogeo MateraSum and finally to this tranquil church, Matera had revealed layers of its rich and complex history. Each site offered a unique perspective, painting a vivid picture of a city that has endured and thrived through the centuries. The church provided a moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to appreciate the spiritual heart of Matera.

Before heading back to Hydria Residence, we stopped by JAR - Beer, Wine & Bites for a refreshing drink. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. Mateus enjoyed a soda, while Isabela and I savored local wines. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and we chatted with some of the locals, sharing stories and laughter. It felt like a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion. As we walked back, the Sassi were bathed in the warm glow of the evening light, creating a magical and unforgettable scene. I thought about how lucky we were to experience this incredible city together as a family.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Parco Scultura La Palomba, Chiesa di San Pietro Caveoso and the Chiesa Rupestre della Madonna della Croce. I am looking forward to more adventures with my family!

For dinner, we chose La Nicchia nel Sasso Osteria Contemporanea. The restaurant provides a modern twist on traditional cuisine and also boasts a breathtaking view of the Sassi. The osteria is known for its regional cuisine and romantic atmosphere. I had the lamb with cardoncelli mushrooms, while Isabela enjoyed a pasta dish with fava beans. Mateus enjoyed a simple plate of pasta with tomato sauce. The service was excellent, and we all agreed that it was a memorable meal. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.
