A Day of Art, History, and Culinary Delights in Matera

Today was a day of exploration and wonder here in Matera, a city that continues to surprise and enchant me with its rich history and vibrant culture. Isabela, Mateus and I set out to discover more of what this fascinating place has to offer.

Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Spaghetteria Miseria e Nobiltà Matera. The name itself is quite a mouthful, but the food was even better. I opted for a simple yet satisfying Italian breakfast: a cappuccino and a pastry. The cappuccino was rich and creamy, a perfect start to the day. Isabela enjoyed a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, while Mateus devoured a plate of pancakes. We were happy to find options for everyone in the family.

After breakfast, we headed to Parco Scultura La Palomba. This sculpture park is located in an old tufa quarry, which in itself is a stunning setting. The sculptures, created by Antonio Paradiso, are made from limestone and steel, and many incorporate recycled materials. The park was quiet, and we were able to wander around at our own pace, admiring the artwork and the beautiful natural surroundings. The sculptures are large and imposing, and their stark lines contrast beautifully with the rugged landscape. Mateus was particularly fascinated by the sheer size of the sculptures, running around them and marveling at how they were made. The park is a testament to Matera’s ability to blend its ancient past with modern artistic expression.

Next on our itinerary was the Chiesa di San Pietro Caveoso. This church, located in the Sasso Caveoso, has a fascinating history. Originally built in 1218, it has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries. The Baroque facade, added in the 17th century, is quite striking. Inside, the church is adorned with frescoes and a wooden altar. As we stepped inside, the cool, dim interior offered a welcome respite from the midday sun. The church is not just a religious site; it’s a historical artifact that tells the story of Matera through its architecture and art. I found myself imagining the countless people who had walked through those doors over the centuries, each leaving their own mark on the fabric of the building. Isabela pointed out the intricate details of the frescoes, explaining the stories they depicted to Mateus. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the past and appreciate the enduring spirit of Matera.

After immersing ourselves in the art and history of Matera, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. We chose Ego, a restaurant known for its innovative cuisine. The restaurant itself had a modern aesthetic, which was a departure from the more traditional settings we had encountered so far. The service was attentive, and the staff was knowledgeable about the menu. I opted for the risotto with ossobuco and prawns, a dish that came highly recommended. The flavors were indeed an explosion of delicate and balanced tastes. Isabela chose a vegetarian tasting menu, and she was equally impressed with the creativity and freshness of the dishes. Mateus, ever the adventurous eater, tried a bit of everything and declared it all delicious. It was a delightful culinary experience that showcased the modern side of Matera's food scene.

In the afternoon, we visited the Chiesa Rupestre della Madonna della Croce. This rock church is a bit outside the main part of Matera, but it was well worth the trip. The church is carved into the rock and features Byzantine frescoes. The entrance is set within a large parabolic arch carved into the rock. Inside, the church has a single nave, with the presbytery separated by a lowered arch and a stone balustrade. The frescoes, dating back to the 13th century, are stunning. The Madonna Regina is depicted on the apse, seated on a throne with the Child, flanked by the Archangels Raphael and Gabriel. High above, the words Mater Dei are inscribed in Greek. The atmosphere inside the church was serene and contemplative, a perfect place to reflect on the history and spirituality of Matera.

Before dinner, we made a stop at Sassi in Miniatura. This charming shop sells miniature replicas of the Sassi, Matera's famous cave dwellings. The miniatures are made of tufa stone and are incredibly detailed. It was fascinating to see the Sassi represented in miniature form, and it gave us a new appreciation for the architecture and history of the city. Mateus picked out a small replica of our hotel, Hydria Residence, as a souvenir. I purchased a few miniature Sassi houses to bring back home as gifts for friends and family. It was a perfect way to support local artisans and bring a piece of Matera back with us.

For dinner, we chose San Biagio Ristorante - Matera centro sassi. The restaurant is located in the heart of the Sassi and has a cozy, inviting atmosphere. The menu features traditional Materan cuisine, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. I ordered the orecchiette with ragu, a classic Pugliese dish. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the ragu was rich and flavorful. Isabela had the grilled lamb, which was tender and succulent. Mateus opted for the pizza, which was thin-crust and delicious. The service was attentive, and the staff made us feel welcome. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

As we walked back to our hotel, the Sassi were bathed in the soft glow of the evening lights. The city felt magical, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience its beauty and history. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the MUdeSCA - Museo dello Scavo Matera, Rione Malve, and Palombaro lungo. I am particularly excited to explore the Palombaro lungo, an ancient underground cistern. I am also looking forward to trying L'Antica Credenza - Bistrot, a local bar.

Matera continues to captivate us with its blend of ancient history and modern charm. Each day brings new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. I am eager to see what tomorrow holds and to continue sharing our journey with you.

It’s been an incredible journey so far, and as we prepare for our final days in Matera, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve shared as a family. It is truly a unique and unforgettable place that has captured our hearts. I’m excited to see what the rest of our adventure holds, and I look forward to sharing it all with you.

I am also reminded of how fortunate I am to share these experiences with my family, Isabela and Mateus. Their enthusiasm and curiosity make every adventure even more special. I cherish these moments together, knowing that they will become lasting memories that we will treasure for years to come.
