Adieu, Kanazawa!

As my solo adventure in Kanazawa draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of contentment and a tinge of melancholy. This city, with its rich history and vibrant culture, has truly captured my heart. From exploring meticulously preserved Edo-era districts to savoring exquisite culinary creations, every moment has been a delightful discovery. Today, my final day, was no exception, offering a perfect blend of historical insights and modern delights.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Spice Box. The reviews I read online raved about their Indian cuisine, a delightful change from the usual Japanese fare. I decided to try their chicken korma, and it was absolutely delicious. The warm spices and creamy sauce were the perfect way to kickstart my day. It was also a great value for money, and the service was exceptional. I chatted briefly with the Sri Lankan owners, who were incredibly kind and welcoming. It reminded me a bit of the warmth I feel back home in Brazil, a comforting start to the day. I made a mental note to try making chicken korma for Isabela and Mateus when I get back to Kingston; I think they'd both enjoy it.

With a satisfied stomach, I set off to explore the Kanazawa Shinise Memorial Hall. This beautifully restored building, once the Nakaya Pharmacy, offered a fascinating glimpse into the life of a traditional merchant family. Walking through the rooms, I could almost imagine the pharmacists of old preparing their remedies and serving the community. The Mise-no-Ma on the first floor was particularly captivating, with its recreation of a traditional storefront, complete with a brazier and tobacco tray. As a historical building restoration consultant, I was thoroughly impressed by the meticulous attention to detail in preserving the building's original features. It's inspiring to see how Kanazawa cherishes its history, much like my hometown of Ouro Preto in Brazil. The second floor displayed old-fashioned tools of daily life that have been handed down in the local long-established shops.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are found in the quiet corners of history.

Next on my itinerary was the Kanazawa Nishi-chaya Museum. Located in the Nishi-chaya district, this museum provided a glimpse into the elegant world of Kanazawa's teahouse culture. The museum is a recreation of a building on the site of the Chaya Yoshiyonero. The first floor had materials related to Seijiro Shimada, and the second floor recreated the interior of a luxurious teahouse. As I wandered through the exhibits, I learned about the history and traditions of the geisha and the important role they played in Kanazawa's social life. The atmosphere was serene and contemplative, allowing me to fully appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship of the tea utensils, kimonos, and other artifacts on display.

After immersing myself in history and culture, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Kanazawa Forus. This modern shopping mall, conveniently located near Kanazawa Station, offered a wide variety of shops selling everything from fashion to books to music. I spent a pleasant hour browsing the stores, picking up a few souvenirs for Isabela and Mateus. I found a beautiful silk scarf for Isabela and a cool Japanese toy for Mateus. I also couldn't resist buying myself a couple of books on Japanese architecture to add to my collection. It's always nice to bring back something tangible from my travels, a reminder of the experiences and memories I've made.

For lunch, I ventured to Atsushi. This restaurant had been recommended for its sushi. I opted for a selection of sushi rolls and a refreshing avocado salad. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a delightful culinary experience that perfectly captured the essence of Japanese cuisine. I savored each bite, appreciating the artistry and skill of the chef. The restaurant itself was charming, with a cozy and inviting atmosphere. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration of Kanazawa.

As the day wound down, I decided to try some Philippine cuisine for dinner at Hay Naku! Philippine restaurant. It's always interesting to see how different cultures interpret and adapt each other's cuisines. I ordered adobo, a classic Filipino dish, and it was surprisingly delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, with a perfect balance of sweet, sour, and savory. It was a comforting and satisfying meal that reminded me of the diverse culinary influences in Brazil.

Reflecting on my time in Kanazawa, I am struck by the city's ability to seamlessly blend the old and the new. It's a place where ancient traditions coexist harmoniously with modern innovations, creating a unique and captivating atmosphere. The well-preserved Edo-era districts offer a glimpse into the past, while the vibrant arts scene and modern shopping destinations showcase the city's dynamic present. Kanazawa is a city that truly has something for everyone, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience its many charms.

As I prepare to leave Kanazawa tomorrow, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had and the memories I've made. This solo journey has been a valuable opportunity for self-reflection and personal growth. I've learned so much about Japanese culture, history, and architecture, and I've also gained a deeper understanding of myself. I am excited to return home to Isabela and Mateus, eager to share my stories and experiences with them. Until next time, Kanazawa, arigato!

The end of my trip also means I need to start thinking about getting back to work. There's that old Victorian house in downtown Kingston that needs my attention, and I'm eager to get started on the restoration project. But for now, I'll cherish the memories of this incredible journey and look forward to the next adventure that awaits me.

I noticed that the Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival took place earlier in June. It sounds like it would have been a blast to see the impressive parade of warriors !
