Salta's Charms: A Day of Discovery

Today was a day of immersing myself in Salta's beauty and history. From soaring heights to sacred spaces, the city unveiled its many layers, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for its unique blend of culture and heritage. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel solo – the freedom to explore at my own pace and discover hidden gems along the way.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafè del Tiempo. The café had a very picturesque and pleasant ambiance. After breakfast, I decided to embrace the day with a visit to San Bernardo's Hill.

I chose to ascend via the teleférico, or cable car, from San Martin Park.

The park itself was lovely, with singing birds and a small handicraft market. I strolled through the park taking in the beautiful scenery. As I walked, I admired the monuments and the serene lake. The park is conveniently located near the bus terminal. I found it to be a relaxing space with friendly people around.

The teleférico ride was a treat, offering panoramic views of Salta and the Lerma Valley. Each gondola holds up to 15 people. The summit of San Bernardo Hill had its own charm, complete with cafes and shops. The fresh air and stunning vistas were invigorating. I spent a good hour at the top, simply absorbing the beauty of Salta spread out before me. The temperature in Salta in November is moderately hot, with average highs of 81°F (27°C).

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.

After descending from San Bernardo Hill, I made my way to Iglesia y Museo San Francisco.

This basilica, with its striking ivory-white columns and ox-blood walls, is a true architectural treasure. The bell tower, standing at 54 meters, is the tallest in South America. Inside, I found the Campana de la Patria, a bell made from weapons used in the Battle of Salta. The museum holds a collection of valuable art and artifacts. The church was built by Fray Vicente Muñoz and embellished by architect Luis Giorgi. The church is located a few meters from the main square. The basilica showcases Italianate Neocolonial architecture. I was impressed by the intricate detailing and the sense of history within those walls.

For lunch, I headed to La Casona del Molino.

This place is known for its authentic Argentine folklore music and lively atmosphere. It was a bit outside the main square, so I took an Uber. I arrived without a reservation around 9 pm and waited about 30 minutes to get in. The atmosphere was great with friendly people. I tried the meat empanadas and melted cheese with herbs. The prices were good. It was a must-experience if visiting Salta. The restaurant has many areas where you can hear different songs played and sung. Dancing is also welcomed. The peña reminded me of the lively music and cultural gatherings back in Ouro Preto, filling me with a sense of saudade for my homeland. I can see why it is such a popular tourist attraction.

In the late afternoon, I ventured to San Martin Park. It was a great open space not far from the main square. The park features a palm-fringed lake where visitors can enjoy pedal boating. The park also has a statue of José de San Martín, adding to its historical charm. I enjoyed a leisurely walk admiring the various monuments. The park is well-preserved with cut grass. It is a great place to relax.

For dinner, I chose Aires Caseros - Cocina Regional.

Known for its authentic regional cuisine. The restaurant is located on Buenos Aires street. It is a popular spot for those seeking to immerse themselves in the regional gastronomy of Salta. The menu is deeply rooted in the flavors of northwest Argentina. The restaurant offers a cozy and traditional atmosphere. I decided on one of their signature Tablas, which included a variety of regional specialties such as empanadas, humita, and tamales. The osobuco al disco was particularly memorable, with its tender and flavorful meat. The restaurant uses fresh ingredients bought daily. The key is the absence of fried food or artificial condiments. The food was delicious and abundant.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Bourbon Bar Salta.

This bar is known for its wide selection of bourbons and cocktails. It has a vibrant outdoor patio. It is a popular spot with delicious food and excellent service. I opted for a local beer and enjoyed the lively atmosphere. The bar also receives praise for its delightful pina colada. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Quebrada de San Lorenzo and the Municipal Reserve Yungas De San Lorenzo. I’m looking forward to immersing myself in nature and experiencing more of Salta's stunning landscapes. I will have breakfast at Restaurante Mesón de la plaza, lunch at Adobe Cocina Regional, and dinner at El Charrúa Restaurante y Parrillada. I may also check out Glou Gintoneria.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Salta's rich culture and history. It's a city that truly captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression. The warmth of the people, the stunning landscapes, and the vibrant culture make Salta a destination I'll cherish forever. I’m also grateful that I didn’t forget my camera, so I could capture all of the amazing scenery. However, I did forget to pack my sunglasses.
