A Day Among the Yungas

Today was a symphony of green, a melody of birdsong, and a feast for the senses. I ventured into the heart of Salta's natural beauty, trading the city's colonial charm for the embrace of the Yungas. It was a day filled with exploration, delicious food, and the kind of peaceful solitude that rejuvenates the soul.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Mesón de la Plaza. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of local pastries set the stage for adventure. I savored every bite, knowing I'd need the energy for the day ahead. The restaurant was conveniently located and had a very pleasant atmosphere, the perfect way to start the day.

With a full stomach and an eager spirit, I set off to explore the Quebrada de San Lorenzo. The bus ride itself was an experience, winding through the outskirts of Salta and offering glimpses of local life. As the city faded behind me, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of green, the air growing fresher with every turn.

Arriving at the Quebrada de San Lorenzo, I was immediately struck by the sheer beauty of the place. The lush forest, the sound of the river, and the towering mountains created an atmosphere of serene grandeur. I decided to start with a hike through the Municipal Reserve Yungas De San Lorenzo. The trails were well-maintained, and I found myself lost in the beauty of the subtropical mountain climate.

The hike was invigorating, and I was grateful for my comfortable walking shoes. The air was humid, and the temperature was pleasant. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating dappled patterns on the forest floor. I paused often to admire the diverse flora, from towering trees to delicate orchids. I even spotted a few colorful birds, their calls echoing through the trees.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Reaching the scenic viewpoint, I was rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of Salta and the surrounding mountains. The city looked like a miniature world below, and the mountains stretched as far as the eye could see. I took a moment to reflect on the beauty of the landscape, feeling a deep sense of connection to the earth. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, why I seek out these experiences that ground me and fill me with awe.

After a fulfilling morning of hiking, my stomach started to rumble, reminding me it was time for lunch. I made my way to Adobe Cocina Regional, a restaurant known for its authentic Salta cuisine. The restaurant was charming, with a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff.

I decided to try the guiso, a traditional stew, and a local beer. The food was rich and flavorful, a true taste of the region. I savored every spoonful, feeling the warmth of the spices and the heartiness of the ingredients. It was the perfect meal to replenish my energy after a morning of hiking.

As the afternoon unfolded, I decided to explore more of what Quebrada de San Lorenzo had to offer. I strolled along the river, watching families picnicking and children playing. I browsed the artisan stalls, admiring the local crafts and chatting with the vendors. There was a sense of community and joy in the air, a feeling of connection that transcended language and culture.

Before heading back to Salta, I treated myself to a drink at Glou Gintoneria. This bar is known for its extensive collection of gins and expertly crafted cocktails. I enjoyed a refreshing gin and tonic, savoring the moment and reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar had a vibrant atmosphere, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the evening air.

For dinner, I chose El Charrúa Restaurante y Parrillada. I had heard rave reviews about their grilled meats, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The restaurant was lively and bustling, filled with the aroma of sizzling meat. I ordered the parrillada for one, a selection of grilled meats, and a glass of Malbec. The meat was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, and the wine was a perfect complement. The portions were generous, and I left feeling completely satisfied.

As I write this, back in my hotel room, I can still smell the wood smoke from the grill and hear the echoes of birdsong in my mind. Today was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life: the beauty of nature, the taste of good food, and the joy of exploration. It’s experiences like these that make traveling so rewarding, that fill my soul with a sense of wonder and gratitude.

Tomorrow, I'm excited to embark on another adventure: a trip to the Tren a las Nubes and Recta del Tin Tin. I've heard so much about the breathtaking views from the train and the unique landscape of the Recta del Tin Tin, and I can't wait to experience it for myself. But for now, I'll close my eyes and drift off to sleep, dreaming of the Yungas and the adventures that await me.

Before I head to sleep, I will check out some of the local events happening in Salta. There's a Palito Ortega concert at the Provincial Theater of Salta and P.I.L.F. at La Rosa disco. I'm not sure I'll have the energy to attend either after such a long day, but it's good to know what's happening in the city.
