A Day of Panoramic Views and Desert Landscapes

Today was a day of contrasts, from the heights of Cerro San Bernardo offering panoramic views of Salta to the expansive desert landscapes of Parque Nacional Los Cardones. It was a day where I truly felt the grandeur of Argentina's natural beauty, a day of exploration that resonated with my soul.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at 802 Cocina A Las Brasas.

The aroma of grilled meats filled the air, a tempting invitation, but I opted for something lighter to prepare for the day's adventures. Fuelled and ready, my first stop was Cerro San Bernardo. I decided to take the Teleférico up. The ascent was smooth, and as I climbed higher, the city unfolded beneath me like a living map. From the top, the views were simply breathtaking. The entire city of Salta was laid out before me, framed by the surrounding mountains. I could see the terracotta roofs of the colonial buildings, the vibrant green parks, and the distant horizon stretching out to meet the sky.

I spent some time at the summit, taking in the views from every angle. There's a charming little wine bar up there, which I thought was a unique touch. I resisted the urge to indulge, knowing I had a long day ahead. I also explored the small oratory and the artisan shops, picking up a few souvenirs for Isabela and Mateus. I chose a hand-painted ceramic bird for Isabela, knowing she'd appreciate the craftsmanship, and a small leather football for Mateus, hoping it would remind him of his Brazilian heritage, even in Canada.

After descending from Cerro San Bernardo, I grabbed a quick lunch at Jovi Dos.

I had heard about their generous portions, and they weren't kidding! I ordered a Milanesa, which was easily enough for two people. It was a classic Argentine dish, simple but satisfying, and exactly what I needed to fuel my afternoon adventure. The restaurant had a lively, bustling atmosphere, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the hearty fare.

With my stomach full, I set off for Parque Nacional Los Cardones.

The drive was an adventure in itself, the landscape gradually transforming from lush greenery to arid desert. As I drove, I couldn't help but reflect on the differences between this landscape and the familiar forests of Kingston. It's these stark contrasts that make travel so enriching, broadening our perspectives and deepening our appreciation for the world's diversity.

Arriving at Parque Nacional Los Cardones felt like stepping onto another planet. The vast expanse of cacti, stretching as far as the eye could see, was a truly awe-inspiring sight. The park is known for its unique cardon cacti, some of which are hundreds of years old. I spent hours wandering through the park, marveling at the resilience of these plants in such a harsh environment. November in Los Cardones brings warm days, with temperatures that can reach up to 20°C, and cooler nights. The weather was perfect for exploring, with clear skies and a gentle breeze.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest places.

As the sun began to set, I found a quiet spot to sit and watch the colors change across the landscape. The sky transformed into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples, casting long shadows across the cacti. It was a moment of perfect serenity, a reminder of the simple beauty that exists in the world, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I thought of Isabela and Mateus, wishing they could share this moment with me.

For dinner, I decided to try La Rosadita Restaurant.

I opted for delivery, wanting to relax in my hotel room after a long day of exploring. I ordered a traditional Argentine steak, cooked to perfection, and savored every bite as I reflected on the day's adventures. The steak was rich and flavorful, a testament to Argentina's reputation for high-quality beef.

Before heading back to the hotel, I made a quick stop at La Birrería Salta.

I wanted to try some local beer and soak in the Salta nightlife. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with locals chatting and laughing over drinks. I ordered a Salta Cerveza, a local brew, and toasted to a day well spent. The beer was crisp and refreshing, a perfect end to a perfect day.

As I walked back to Hotel Brizo Salta,

I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had today. From the panoramic views of Cerro San Bernardo to the stark beauty of Parque Nacional Los Cardones, Salta had revealed its many facets, each one more captivating than the last. I thought about my work back in Kingston, restoring old buildings, and how it connects to my travels. Both are about preserving history and culture, about understanding the stories of the past and bringing them to life for future generations.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Quebrada del Toro and Paseo de la Balcarce, eager to uncover more of Salta's hidden gems. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Alto NOA Shopping, perhaps finding a special gift for Isabela and Mateus. I'm looking forward to experiencing more of Salta's culture and history, immersing myself in its vibrant atmosphere. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of today, the panoramic views, the desert landscapes, and the quiet moments of reflection. I'm also keeping a close eye on the essentials I seem to keep forgetting. I really need to pick up a power adapter and some sunglasses!

This solo journey is proving to be exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with myself, to explore new horizons, and to appreciate the beauty of the world around me. It's a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we take alone, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience and discover new aspects of ourselves along the way.
