Above the Clouds and Through the Tin Tin Straight

Today was a day of soaring heights and seemingly endless horizons, a true testament to the dramatic beauty of Salta. From the legendary Tren a las Nubes to the surreal landscape of the Recta del Tin Tin, I felt like I was traversing another world. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comfort of Kingston for the open road.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Resturante Doña Lizeth. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the strong, rich coffee were the perfect fuel for the adventure ahead. It's funny; sometimes the simplest meals in the most unassuming places become the most memorable. This little spot, tucked away in a quiet corner, was a gem. Fully energized, I set off for what promised to be an unforgettable experience: the Tren a las Nubes.

The journey to the train itself was an adventure. The bus wound its way through the Quebrada del Toro, a dramatic gorge where the landscape transformed with every turn. The towering cliffs and rugged mountains were a sight to behold. It was easy to see why this region is so captivating. As we climbed higher, the fertile valleys gave way to the stark beauty of the altiplano.
Finally, we arrived in San Antonio de los Cobres, a small mining town perched high in the Andes. This is where the Tren a las Nubes begins its ascent. The anticipation was palpable as we boarded the train, ready to climb even higher into the clouds.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that take you far beyond your comfort zone.

The Tren a las Nubes, or Train to the Clouds, is one of the highest altitude trains in the world. As the train chugged along, it wasn't just a mode of transportation; it was an experience. The views were simply breathtaking. The unique highland desert, the Puna de Atacama, stretched out before us, a flatland averaging 3,500 meters in altitude, bordered by watercolor-like mountains reaching up to 6,000 meters. I tried to imagine what Isabela and Mateus would think of this view. Mateus would be fascinated by the engineering, I'm sure.

The train made its way to the Polvorilla Viaduct, a massive structure spanning a deep canyon. Standing 4,220 meters above sea level, it felt like we were truly riding through the clouds. The jagged peaks of the Andes and the expansive Puna desert stretched as far as the eye could see. It was the perfect moment to capture some photos and take in the sheer scale and beauty of the surroundings. I made sure to get a seat on the left side of the train for the best angle of the Polvorilla Viaduct.
After the exhilarating train ride, it was time for lunch. El Rey del Bife was the perfect choice, offering a taste of local flavors. I opted for a traditional Argentine steak, cooked to perfection. It's amazing how satisfying a simple, well-prepared meal can be after a day of adventure. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the hearty cuisine.

With a full stomach and a renewed sense of adventure, I set off for the Recta del Tin Tin. This legendary road, straight as an arrow, cuts through the heart of the Parque Nacional Los Cardones. As I drove along this seemingly endless straightaway, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The landscape was surreal, almost otherworldly. Towering cardon cacti stood like silent sentinels on either side of the road, their ancient presence adding to the mystique of the place.

The Recta del Tin Tin is more than just a straight road; it's a journey through time. Originally built by the Incas, it stretches for 18 kilometers at an altitude of 3,000 meters above sea level. Driving along it, I felt connected to the ancient cultures that once thrived in this region. The mountains in the distance displayed a varied range of colors, from reddish to green, white, and yellowish, a testament to the geological wonders of the area.
Before dinner, I stopped by the Salta Gallery Shop. I always like to pick up a few mementos from my travels, and this shop had a great selection of local crafts and artwork. It's a great way to support local artisans and take home a piece of Salta's culture. I found a beautiful hand-woven tapestry that I know Isabela will love.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to VIRACOCHA cocina fusión andina for dinner. This restaurant promised a unique culinary experience, blending traditional Andean ingredients with modern techniques. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the menu was full of intriguing options. I decided to try the cazuela de humita, which was described as a maravilla by other travelers. It definitely lived up to the hype!

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Salta has to offer. From the thrilling ride on the Tren a las Nubes to the serene beauty of the Recta del Tin Tin, every moment was a feast for the senses. It's a place where history, culture, and nature come together in perfect harmony.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Cerro San Bernardo and Parque Nacional Los Cardones. I'm also hoping to check out La Birrería Salta for a taste of the local nightlife. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.
As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Salta has exceeded all my expectations, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.
