Day 14: A Fond Farewell to Nafplio: Reflecting on History and Hidden Gems
Join José and Isabella on their final day in Nafplio as they explore ancient ruins, statues, and local shops, savoring the last moments.
Adieu, Nafplio!
As our two-week adventure in Nafplio draws to a close, Isabella and I spent our final day soaking in the last bits of history and charm this coastal town had to offer. It's amazing how a place can feel like home in such a short time. Today was all about revisiting our favorite spots and discovering a few hidden gems we'd missed along the way.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at ΜΙΤΑΤΟ Grill Restaurant. We opted for a selection of local pastries and strong Greek coffee, a perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a delightful start to our morning.
After breakfast, we set out to the Archaeological Site of Asine. Located a short drive from Nafplio, this ancient site offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's past. As we walked through the ruins, I couldn't help but imagine what life was like here thousands of years ago. The site is strategically positioned overlooking the sea, and it's easy to see why this location was chosen for settlement as early as the third millennium BC.

The site is rich with history, having been mentioned by Homer and playing a role throughout various periods, from the Bronze Age to Roman times. Isabella, with her librarian's curiosity, was particularly intrigued by the layers of habitation uncovered by Swedish archaeologists in the 1920s. The Hellenistic fortifications, built around 300 BC, and the more recent World War II trenches added to the site's complex story.
The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
We spent a couple of hours wandering through the site, taking in the panoramic views and imagining the lives of those who once called Asine home. The reconstructed ancient gate and informative signposts made the experience all the more engaging. It's amazing to see how ancient remains have been re-examined and enhanced, offering visitors a tangible connection to the past.
Back in Nafplio, our next stop was the Statue of Otto. Located in the heart of the city, this imposing sculpture pays tribute to King Otto, the first monarch of modern Greece. As we approached the statue, we were struck by its grandeur and the way it dominates the square, a gathering point for locals and tourists alike.

The statue stands in Trion Navarchon Square, which is named after the three admirals who fought in the Battle of Navarino. The square itself is surrounded by neoclassical buildings, including the Town Hall, which was once Greece's first high school. The area is steeped in history, and it’s fascinating to think that King Otto once resided in a small palace on this very square.
For lunch, we decided to try Ar&Ko, a local spot known for its traditional Greek cuisine. We shared a selection of mezes, including tzatziki, dolmades, and grilled halloumi. The food was simple but delicious, and the lively atmosphere made it a memorable meal.

In the afternoon, Isabella and I strolled through the streets of Nafplio, soaking in the atmosphere and browsing the local shops. We stumbled upon Bazaar Estel, a charming gift shop filled with unique souvenirs and fashionable accessories. Isabella, always on the lookout for a special memento, found a beautiful handcrafted necklace that perfectly captured the essence of our trip. The shop's warm atmosphere and friendly staff made the experience all the more enjoyable.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Palio Archontiko for our final dinner in Nafplio. This traditional Greek taverna, nestled in a cozy alleyway, offered the perfect setting for a farewell meal. We ordered a selection of classic dishes, including moussaka, pastitsio, and souvlaki. The portions were generous, and the flavors were rich and authentic. The complimentary semolina cake was a sweet ending to a perfect meal.

As we savored our last sips of local wine, we reflected on our time in Nafplio. From exploring ancient ruins to indulging in local cuisine, this town has captured our hearts. It's a place where history comes alive, and every corner holds a new discovery. I thought back to my youth in Trinidad, Uruguay. While vastly different geographically, both places share a strong sense of community and a deep connection to their roots. It's these similarities that make traveling so rewarding, connecting us to people and places in unexpected ways.
Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Edmonton. While I'm eager to return to my job as a Maple Syrup Coordinator and share my experiences with the Evendo travel portal community, a part of me will always remain in Nafplio. The memories we've made here will stay with us forever. I'm already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever it may take us.
Before heading back to our hotel, Amymone and Adiandi, we took one last stroll through the illuminated streets of Nafplio. The air was crisp, and the stars twinkled above us. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to our time in this enchanting town.
