Day 6: A Day of Heights, History, and Harmony in Chefchaouen
Discover Chefchaouen's charm through panoramic views, historic squares, and vibrant local life. Join José and Isabella on their Moroccan journey.
Blue Vistas and Lively Squares
Today in Chefchaouen was a delightful mix of breathtaking views, historical immersion, and the simple pleasure of observing local life. From the panoramic heights to the bustling squares, every moment offered a new perspective on this enchanting blue city. It’s amazing how a change of scenery can shift your entire outlook, and today was a testament to that.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tissemlal. I opted for some traditional Moroccan pancakes, while Isabella enjoyed a fruit plate. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the attractions Chefchaouen had in store for us. Our first stop was the famed Hero Eagle viewpoint.

Reaching for the Sky at Hero Eagle
The walk to Hero Eagle was invigorating. The crisp morning air was a welcome change from the warmer temperatures we've been experiencing, and the views along the way were simply stunning. As we ascended, the city unfolded beneath us, revealing a mesmerizing tapestry of blue hues stretching across the Rif Mountains. Isabella was particularly excited, snapping photos at every turn. She has always had a keen eye for photography, and Chefchaouen provided endless opportunities for her artistic pursuits. I, on the other hand, was more focused on the physical challenge of the climb, enjoying the way my muscles worked with each step. It reminded me of our hikes back in the Canadian Rockies, though the scenery here was undeniably unique.
Hero Eagle itself is more of a viewpoint than a specific landmark, but the panoramic vista it offers is simply breathtaking. We spent a good hour there, soaking it all in and capturing photos from every angle. It’s a perfect spot to appreciate the unique architecture and the serene atmosphere of Chefchaouen. The way the sunlight played on the blue buildings was magical, creating a scene that felt straight out of a dream. Isabella and I just sat there for a while, not saying much, but both completely content in each other's company and the beauty surrounding us.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are the ones where you simply pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty around you.
A Stroll Through Place El Haouta
After descending from Hero Eagle, we decided to immerse ourselves in the heart of Chefchaouen by visiting Place El Haouta. This bustling square is a central meeting point for locals and tourists alike, offering a vibrant glimpse into the city’s daily life. The name “Hawta,” meaning surrounded or walled in, perfectly describes the character of this square. As we entered the square, we were immediately captivated by its unique architecture and charming ambiance. The blue-tiled buildings with classic arches and iron grills created a delightful and distinctive atmosphere.

The square was alive with activity. Street vendors hawked their wares, children played, and the aroma of Moroccan cuisine filled the air. We wandered through the square, admiring the local handicrafts and soaking in the lively atmosphere. Isabella was particularly drawn to a small shop selling hand-painted ceramics, while I was fascinated by a group of men playing traditional music. We stopped to listen for a while, tapping our feet to the rhythm and enjoying the communal spirit of the square.
At the heart of Place El Haouta, we found a beautiful four-sided fountain, providing locals with refreshing drinking water. It was a testament to the square’s role as a communal hub, a place where people come together to socialize and connect. We sat on a nearby bench, watching the world go by and feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a vibrant and authentic place.
Lunch at Sofia: A Culinary Interlude
By this point, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we decided to find a spot for lunch. Based on a recommendation from our hotel, we headed to Sofia, a local restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan dishes. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We were seated at a table overlooking a small courtyard, filled with plants and flowers.

I ordered a tagine with lamb and vegetables, while Isabella opted for a couscous dish with chicken. The food was delicious, flavorful, and authentic. The tagine was particularly memorable, the lamb tender and succulent, the vegetables perfectly cooked and seasoned. We savored every bite, washing it down with refreshing mint tea. It was the perfect culinary interlude, a chance to relax and recharge before continuing our exploration of Chefchaouen.
Evening Reflections and Rhythmic Beats
As evening approached, we made our way to Restaurant Bar Chaouen, a local spot known for its lively atmosphere and refreshing drinks. We settled into a cozy corner, ordered some Moroccan beers, and reflected on the day’s adventures. The bar was buzzing with activity, locals and tourists mingling and chatting, creating a vibrant and convivial atmosphere.

As the night wore on, the bar transformed into a lively night club. An incredible female vocalist began to perform in Arabic, accompanied by a talented keyboardist. The music was infectious, and soon the entire bar was dancing and singing along. Isabella and I joined in the fun, letting loose and enjoying the moment. It was an unforgettable experience, a perfect end to a day filled with beauty, history, and harmony.
Before heading back to Maison D'hôtes Afassi, we enjoyed a late dinner at Chez Hicham. The food was simple but delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It was the perfect way to wind down after a long and eventful day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Akchour and Grande Cascade D'akchour [waterfalls], so we'll need a good night's rest. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the natural beauty surrounding Chefchaouen. I've heard the hikes can be a bit challenging, but I'm sure the views will be worth it. Isabella is already planning her photography shots, eager to capture the cascading water and lush greenery.
As I lay in bed, reflecting on the day, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. Chefchaouen has exceeded all my expectations, offering a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. I’m so glad Isabella and I decided to come here, to experience this magical place together. It’s a journey we’ll cherish for years to come.
For those planning to visit Chefchaouen, I would highly recommend setting aside time to simply wander and absorb the atmosphere. Sometimes the best experiences are the ones you don't plan. Embrace the unexpected, try new things, and allow yourself to be swept away by the magic of this blue pearl.
And if you are there in August, you might experience some of the local festivals and celebrations.
I am also glad that I packed light, breathable clothing, which is perfect for the warm days and cool nights. However, I wish I had remembered to bring an umbrella, as there was a brief shower this afternoon. Luckily, we were able to find shelter in a nearby cafe, sipping mint tea while we waited for the rain to pass.
Tonight, as I write this entry, I am filled with a sense of contentment and anticipation. Tomorrow promises new adventures, new discoveries, and new memories to be made. Chefchaouen, you have stolen my heart!
