Our journey to Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl of Morocco, has officially begun, and what a start it has been! Isabella and I have been dreaming about this trip for months, and today, that dream materialized into a vibrant, blue-hued reality. After our flight from Edmonton to Tangier and the scenic drive to Chefchaouen, we were ready to immerse ourselves in this unique city. I was particularly excited to put my camera to good use, capturing the essence of this place, though I did have a momentary pang of regret for forgetting the umbrella back home. But hey, a little sunshine never hurt anyone, right?

Our day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Cafe Clock. The café was buzzing with a mix of tourists and locals, all eager to start their day. I opted for the traditional Berber omelet, while Isabella enjoyed the pancakes. Of course, we couldn't resist ordering a couple of spiced cappuccinos – the perfect fuel for our explorations. I made sure to write down a few notes in my travel journal, a habit I've developed to keep track of all the little details that make each trip special.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set out to explore the famed Blue Medina. We decided to join one of the Blue Medina Tours to get a comprehensive understanding of the city's history and culture. Our guide, a local with a wealth of knowledge, led us through the labyrinthine streets, sharing stories and anecdotes that brought the city to life. It was fascinating to learn about the various theories behind the blue hue – from warding off mosquitoes to representing the sky and heaven.
Chefchaouen is more than just a visual spectacle; it's an immersive experience that engages all your senses.
Walking through the medina was like stepping into a dream. The different shades of blue created a calming and surreal atmosphere. Every corner we turned revealed a new photo opportunity, and I found myself snapping away, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. Isabella, with her keen eye for detail, was equally captivated, pointing out the intricate patterns and textures that adorned the buildings.

Next on our list was the Kasbah, a historic fortress located in the heart of the medina. Built in the 15th century by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid, the Kasbah served as a defense against the Portuguese. Today, it houses an ethnographic museum and an art gallery. We climbed to the top of the Kasbah tower, where we were rewarded with panoramic views of Chefchaouen. From up there, the sea of blue stretched out before us, a breathtaking sight that I knew I would never forget. The entrance fee was quite reasonable, and it felt good to support the preservation of this historical site.

After soaking in the views from the Kasbah, we made our way to the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen. This mosque, also known as El-Masjid El-Aadam, is the oldest in the city, dating back to the 15th century. While non-Muslims are not allowed to enter, we admired its architecture from the outside. The octagonal minaret, a unique feature of northern Moroccan mosques, stood tall against the blue backdrop. The call to prayer echoed through the valley, adding to the town's captivating atmosphere.

As the afternoon sun began to dip, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy. We stumbled upon Blue. concept store, a charming shop filled with unique, handcrafted items. The store was a treasure trove of Moroccan artistry, from intricate jewelry to beautifully designed home décor. Isabella, with her love for vintage pieces, was particularly drawn to the textiles. We picked up a few souvenirs for our home in Edmonton, little reminders of our Moroccan adventure. I managed to find a small, hand-painted bowl that I thought would be perfect for holding maple syrup – a little piece of Uruguay, Morocco and Canada all in one.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Bab Ssour, recommended by several locals. The restaurant's rooftop terrace offered stunning views of the city. The staff were incredibly friendly and helped us navigate the menu. I decided on the Kefta tagine, while Isabella tried the vegetable couscous. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true taste of Morocco. We finished our meal with traditional mint tea, a sweet and refreshing end to a perfect lunch.

As the day drew to a close, we strolled through the medina one last time, soaking in the atmosphere. The streets were quieter now, the crowds having thinned out. The soft evening light cast long shadows, adding a new dimension to the blue walls. We found ourselves near the Ras El Ma waterfall, where local women were doing their laundry. The sound of the water and the chatter of the women created a soothing backdrop, a perfect way to end our first day in Chefchaouen.

Tonight, we're dining at Restaurant Dar El Salam, hoping to experience more of Chefchaouen's culinary delights. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Chefchaouen Medina in more detail, visit the City View Point for even more panoramic vistas, and hike to Ras El Ma. I'm also hoping to find Bar Oum Rabie for a relaxing evening drink.
Chefchaouen has already exceeded our expectations. The blue streets, the vibrant culture, and the warm hospitality have all combined to create an unforgettable experience. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
