Day 8: Nature's Embrace and City Gates: Discovering Chefchaouen's Hidden Gems
José and Isabella explore Chefchaouen's natural beauty at Jebel Bouhachem and historic charm at Bab Chaouen, creating unforgettable memories.
A Day of Discoveries in the Blue Pearl
Today was a delightful blend of nature and history, perfectly capturing the essence of Chefchaouen. Isabella and I ventured beyond the mesmerizing blue streets to explore the surrounding landscapes and delve deeper into the city's rich heritage. It's amazing how much this place has to offer beyond its famous facades.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Chourafa. I opted for the traditional Moroccan Shrimp Tajine. Isabella, ever the seafood lover, chose the Sea Bass. The food was delicious, providing the perfect fuel for our day of exploration.

Exploring Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve
After breakfast, we set off for Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve, a sprawling expanse of natural beauty just a short drive from Chefchaouen. The drive itself was scenic, with the Rif Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. As we ascended, the air grew crisper, a welcome change from the town's warmth. I was glad I had packed a light jacket. I must remember to buy an umbrella, as I forgot mine, and the weather can change quickly here.

The reserve is a haven of biodiversity, home to a variety of flora and fauna. We followed one of the well-marked trails, immersing ourselves in the lush greenery. The sounds of nature surrounded us – birds chirping, leaves rustling, and a gentle breeze whispering through the trees. It was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the medina.
I tried my hand at nature photography, attempting to capture the beauty of the landscape. Isabella, ever the patient one, helped me frame my shots, offering tips and encouragement. I am so grateful to share these experiences with her. I really need to remember to buy that extra memory card, as I am already running out of space on my camera!
We spotted several bird species, including majestic eagles soaring overhead. I am no expert, but even I could appreciate their beauty and grace. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving such natural habitats. The reserve is home to 33 species of mammals, 91 species of birds and 29 species of reptiles.
In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
As we hiked, we discussed the importance of sustainable living and conservation. It's something we both feel strongly about, and it's inspiring to see Morocco taking steps to protect its natural heritage. The region is one of the most watered in Morocco, receiving up to 2,000 mm of rain each year.
Lunch at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin
After a morning of hiking, we returned to Chefchaouen for lunch at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin. The restaurant is known for its stunning views of the city, and we were lucky enough to snag a table on the terrace. The panoramic vista of the blue-washed buildings was simply breathtaking.

I decided to try the juicy chicken tagine with caramelized onions and raisins over spiced couscous. Isabella opted for the lemon chicken tagine. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, a testament to the rich culinary traditions of Morocco. We enjoyed our meal while soaking in the views and the warm August sun. I made sure to bring a light jacket for Isabella, as I had read it can get windy as the sun sets.
The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It added to the overall magical experience of dining at this restaurant. It is easy to see why this place is so popular with tourists.
Exploring Bab Chaouen
In the afternoon, we decided to explore Bab Chaouen, one of the historic gates of the city. These gates once served as the main entrances to the medina, each with its own story and significance. As we approached Bab Chaouen, I couldn't help but feel a sense of stepping back in time.

The gate itself is an impressive structure, a testament to the city's rich history. As we wandered through the narrow streets, we encountered vibrant local markets filled with handmade crafts, textiles, and delicious Moroccan cuisine. It was a feast for the senses, with colors, sounds, and smells competing for our attention.
I was particularly fascinated by the intricate metalwork on the doors, each telling a story of the families who lived behind them. The blend of Andalusian, Arab, and Berber influences was evident in the designs, a reflection of the city's cultural heritage. Bab Chaouen is a captivating tourist attraction known for its striking blue-washed buildings.
We explored the ancient kasbahs, mosques, and plazas that narrate the story of this enchanting town. I made sure to sample some traditional Moroccan dishes, savoring the spices and flavors that define the local cuisine. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases a blend of Moroccan and Andalusian influences.
Bab Al-Ain (“Gate of the Source”) gained its fame as a key demarcation point between the historic fortified city and the more “modern” town established by the Spanish in the early 20th century. Its name refers to a large natural spring (“Ayn”) that once flowed near this entrance, a vital water source for the city's inhabitants.
Evening at Café Mundial
As evening approached, we decided to relax at Café Mundial, a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists. The café is known for its cozy atmosphere and excellent service. The cafe boasts a diverse menu, featuring everything from aromatic coffees and teas to light snacks and delectable pastries.

I ordered a traditional Moroccan mint tea, while Isabella opted for a strong coffee. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the views of the surrounding mountains and the bustling street below. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.
The café was filled with a mix of locals and travelers, creating a unique blend of cultures. It was fascinating to observe the interactions, the shared laughter and conversations. It's these moments that make travel so rewarding, the chance to connect with people from different backgrounds and share experiences.
Dinner at Restaurant Ali Baba
For dinner, we chose Restaurant Ali Baba. I had read mixed reviews, but we decided to give it a try. The restaurant offers a variety of Moroccan dishes, and we were both in the mood for something traditional.

I ordered the vegetable couscous, while Isabella chose the vegetarian tagine. Both dishes were flavorful and satisfying, although I must admit the service was a bit slow. However, the warm atmosphere and friendly staff made up for it.
After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the medina, soaking in the sights and sounds of the city at night. The blue-washed buildings took on a different hue under the moonlight, creating a magical ambiance. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Tetouan, a city known for its tannery and modern art center. I am excited to explore another facet of Moroccan culture and history. I have read that the Tetuan Tannery is a must-see attraction, and I am eager to witness the traditional methods of leather production. Isabella is particularly interested in the Tetuan Modern Art Center, as she has a keen eye for contemporary art. I am sure it will be another day filled with new discoveries and unforgettable experiences.
I am so grateful for these experiences. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the beauty and diversity of our world. And I am so lucky to share it all with my wonderful wife, Isabella.
