Chasing Waterfalls and Panoramic Views
Today, the second day of our Moroccan adventure, was all about immersing ourselves in the natural beauty and cultural richness of Chefchaouen. Isabella and I, along with our friends, embarked on a journey that took us from the refreshing springs of Ras El Ma, with plenty of delicious food and local experiences sprinkled in between.
Experience the serene beauty of Ras El Ma, a tranquil oasis in Chefchaouen, where nature and Moroccan culture blend seamlessly for a perfect escape.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Sindibad. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of Moroccan pancakes filled the air as we settled into our seats. The café was already bustling with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its reputation. I opted for the traditional Moroccan breakfast, a delightful spread of msemen (buttery flatbread), honey, and argan oil. Isabella chose the pain au chocolat. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.
After breakfast, we made our way to Ras El Ma, the source of Chefchaouen's water. The walk there was an experience in itself, navigating through the labyrinthine blue alleys of the medina. The vibrant colors and intricate architecture never cease to amaze me. We passed countless photo opportunities, each one more captivating than the last. I couldn't resist stopping every few steps to capture the essence of this enchanting city. The local doors were all unique, and it reminded me of the blue door I have back in Edmonton that I brought back from Chefchaouen when I was 15, when my mom and I hosted a Moroccan exchange student from Chefchaouen.
Reaching Ras El Ma, we were greeted by the sight of fresh mountain water cascading into the town. It was a refreshing oasis, a stark contrast to the bustling medina. Locals were gathered around, some washing clothes, others simply enjoying the cool water. The sound of the water was so relaxing. Isabella and I took a moment to soak it all in, breathing in the fresh mountain air. I snapped a few photos, trying to capture the essence of this tranquil spot.
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not only in its blue-washed walls but also in the simple, everyday moments that connect you to its people and its history.
Next on our itinerary was the Bouzafer Mosque, also known as the Spanish Mosque, perched atop a hill overlooking Chefchaouen. The hike up to the mosque was a bit challenging, but the promise of panoramic views kept us going. The trail wound its way through rocky terrain, offering glimpses of the blue city below. Along the way, we encountered locals tending to their livestock and small houses dotting the landscape.

As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The entire city of Chefchaouen unfolded before us, a sea of blue nestled against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. It was a sight to behold, a moment that made the hike worthwhile. Reaching the mosque, we were rewarded with even more stunning vistas. The Spanish Mosque itself, built in the 1920s, stood as a silent sentinel, a testament to the city's rich history. The mosque wasn’t in use, but it was still a sight to behold. I learned that it was built by the Spanish during the Rif War, but it was never really used as a place of worship.
We spent a considerable amount of time at the viewpoint, simply soaking in the beauty of Chefchaouen. Isabella and I found a quiet spot to sit and reflect, marveling at the city's unique charm. I took numerous photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. I was able to get great shots of Isabella near the mosque.
After descending from the Bouzafer Mosque, our stomachs began to rumble. It was time for lunch, and we decided to try Chez Hicham, a local restaurant known for its Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional Moroccan decor. We ordered a variety of dishes, including chicken tagine, couscous, and Moroccan salad. The flavors were exquisite, a symphony of spices that danced on our taste buds. The chicken tagine was especially delicious, tender and flavorful, cooked to perfection in a traditional clay pot. Isabella enjoyed the Moroccan salad, which was refreshing and flavorful.
Following our satisfying lunch, we decided to explore the medina further, getting lost in its labyrinthine streets. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, vibrant souks, and countless photo opportunities. I purchased a few souvenirs, including a hand-painted ceramic bowl and a leather wallet. Isabella found a beautiful scarf, its intricate patterns reflecting the city's artistic spirit. We talked to a vendor who was very kind, and he told us about the International Festival of Environmental Films of Chefchaouen, which will be held from June 25 to 28. It sounds like a great event, but we won't be here for it.
As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Bar Oum Rabie, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere. We ordered a round of Moroccan mint tea, its sweet and refreshing flavor a perfect end to a day of exploration. The bar was filled with locals and tourists, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere. We chatted with fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Paloma, drawn in by its inviting ambiance and the promise of authentic Moroccan dishes. We weren't disappointed. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with traditional Moroccan lanterns casting a warm glow. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, each one bursting with fresh flavors. For our main courses, I opted for the tagine, while Isabella chose the couscous. The food was outstanding, a testament to the chef's culinary skills.
