Beyond the Blue: Discovering Chefchaouen's Hidden Gems

Today was a day of wandering, of letting Chefchaouen unfold its secrets at its own pace. After nearly a week here, the initial awe of the blue-washed walls has given way to a deeper appreciation for the city's soul. It was a Sunday, and the air felt different – a bit more relaxed, a bit more local. It was a day to get lost, to savor the details, and to truly connect with the spirit of this Moroccan gem.

Our day began, as most days here have, with breakfast at RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ. The fruit salads are always a refreshing start, and the mint tea is the perfect way to wake up and prepare for the day's adventures. The atmosphere is always welcoming, and it’s become a comforting ritual for us. I was particularly grateful for the air conditioning today. It’s amazing how quickly you get used to little luxuries, even in a place as rustic as Chefchaouen. After fortifying ourselves, we were ready to explore.

Our first stop was the City View Point. The gentle climb offered a panoramic vista of Chefchaouen. From this vantage point, the city appeared as an endless sea of blue, punctuated by the green of hidden gardens and the terracotta of rooftops. It was a photographer's dream, and I spent a good hour snapping photos from every conceivable angle. Isabella would have loved this spot. I made a mental note to show her all the pictures and tell her stories about this amazing place.

The true journey of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

Next, we ventured into El Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. It was a poignant reminder of Chefchaouen's layered history. The Mellah stands as a testament to the city's diverse cultural heritage, showcasing a blend of customs and traditions. Wandering through its narrow streets, I imagined the lives of the Jewish families who once called this place home. The architecture was subtly different here, with hints of European influence mingling with the traditional Moroccan style. I learned that Jewish people painted their homes blue to represent the sky, which in turn reminds people of heaven and God. It’s incredible how a simple coat of paint can carry so much meaning.

After the historical immersion, we decided to get intentionally lost in Darb Limoun. This area is the heart of Chefchaouen, and it's a maze of narrow alleyways, each turn revealing a new visual delight. Laundry hung overhead like colorful banners, the scent of spices wafted from hidden doorways, and the sounds of children playing echoed through the streets. We stopped at a small café for a refreshing orange juice, savoring the simple pleasure of being present in this vibrant moment.

For lunch, we chose Sofia, a restaurant recommended by several locals. It’s an all-woman-run establishment, which I always appreciate supporting. I ordered the vegetarian tagine, and it was, without a doubt, the best I’ve ever had. The vegetables were perfectly cooked, the spices were complex and flavorful, and the overall experience was simply divine. It was the kind of meal that makes you want to linger, savoring every bite and soaking in the atmosphere.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way to the aptly named Sunset at sunset bar. Securing a prime spot, we ordered some refreshing drinks and settled in to watch the sky transform into a canvas of fiery hues. The bar was relaxed and inviting, with a mix of tourists and locals all sharing the same sense of awe as the sun dipped below the horizon. I struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler from Germany, and we shared stories of our adventures and misadventures. It’s amazing how easily connections can be made when you’re both open to new experiences.

For dinner, we opted for Restaurant Morisco, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine and its rooftop terrace overlooking the main square. The tagine was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect – lively yet relaxed, with the sounds of music and conversation filling the air. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, our final day in Chefchaouen, we plan to tackle Jebel El-Kelaa Summit for one last panoramic view, visit Park Sidi Abdelhamid, and wander through Bab El Hammar before our departure on Monday. Before we leave we are planning to stop by the Full Moon shop for some souvenirs.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this experience. Chefchaouen has a way of seeping into your soul, of leaving an indelible mark on your heart. It’s a place where time slows down, where simple pleasures are amplified, and where the beauty of everyday life is impossible to ignore. I’m so glad I came, and I know I’ll carry the memories of this blue city with me always.

It’s funny how travel can change you. Before coming to Chefchaouen, I was so focused on my work as a Maple Syrup Coordinator, on the day-to-day grind. But this trip, this immersion into a different culture, has reminded me of the importance of slowing down, of appreciating the beauty around me, and of connecting with people from all walks of life. Maybe I’ll even try painting a wall in our Edmonton home blue. Isabella might think I’m crazy, but who knows, maybe she’ll love it. After all, a little bit of Chefchaouen magic can go a long way.

And with that, I bid you goodnight from the enchanting blue city of Chefchaouen. Until tomorrow, keep exploring, keep discovering, and keep embracing the beauty that life has to offer.

P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to find a travel adaptor at a small shop in the Medina. Crisis averted! And I finally remembered to charge my portable phone charger. It’s the little victories that make all the difference.
