Arrival in Montepulciano

After a long journey from Edmonton, Isabella and I have finally arrived in Montepulciano, ready to dive into the heart of Tuscany. The drive from Rome in our rented car was stunning, a preview of the beauty that awaits us. I’m excited to share every moment of this adventure with you, from the hidden gems to the well-known landmarks. With no pre-booked hotel, we are fully embracing the freedom to explore and immerse ourselves in the local culture.

Our first day began, as all good days should, with coffee. We headed to Caffè Poliziano for breakfast. The cafe is known for its elegant, art nouveau dining room and terrace that offers stunning views of the valley. Isabella ordered a cappuccino, while I opted for a strong espresso, a nod to my Uruguayan roots. We shared a couple of pastries, a delightful way to start our day. The service was prompt and friendly, setting a positive tone for our exploration of Montepulciano. I could tell right away that Isabella was in her element, captivated by the beautiful decor and the panoramic vista.

Fueled up, we decided to take in the sights. Our first stop was the Viewpoint Montepulciano, and it certainly lived up to its name. From this vantage point, the sprawling Tuscan landscape unfolded before us, a tapestry of rolling hills and vineyards basking in the warm June sun. I took out my camera, snapping photos to capture the breathtaking scenery. Isabella, ever the historian, pointed out landmarks in the distance, sharing stories of the region's rich past. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect start to our Italian adventure.

The beauty of Montepulciano lies not just in its stunning views, but in the way it invites you to slow down and savor every moment.

Next, we wandered towards Porta delle Farine, an ancient gateway that once served as a vital entry point for goods. As we approached, I couldn't help but marvel at the well-preserved architecture and intricate stonework. Isabella was particularly fascinated by the history of the gate, imagining the bustling trade that once passed through its arches. We took some time to explore the surrounding area, with its charming cobblestone streets and quaint shops. The gate offered a glimpse into Montepulciano's prosperous Renaissance past.

Our exploration continued with a visit to the Museo Civico Pinacoteca Crociani. Housed in the medieval Palazzo Neri Orselli, the museum boasts an impressive collection of art and artifacts. As we wandered through the halls, we admired works by Sienese and Florentine artists, including pieces by Margaritone d'Arezzo and Filippino Lippi. Isabella was particularly drawn to the Portrait of a Nobleman, attributed to Caravaggio. The museum provided a fascinating insight into the cultural heritage of Montepulciano and the surrounding region.

By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We chose Osteria Del Conte for lunch, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Tuscan cuisine. The osteria was cozy, with a relaxed atmosphere. Isabella ordered the pici pasta, a local specialty, while I opted for the Florentine steak. The food was delicious, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients that Tuscany is famous for. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

As the afternoon waned, we sought a spot to unwind and enjoy a glass of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Sax Wine Bar caught our eye, and we decided to give it a try. The bar had a laid-back vibe, and we settled into a couple of chairs to sample the local wine. The Vino Nobile was rich and full-bodied, a perfect complement to the stunning surroundings. We chatted with the friendly staff, learning more about the region's winemaking traditions.

For dinner, we decided on Ristorante La Grotta, enticed by its reputation for fine dining and beautiful views. The restaurant was elegant, with a warm and inviting ambiance. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by homemade pasta dishes. The service was attentive, and the staff was knowledgeable about the wine list. Overall, it was a delightful culinary experience.

As the day came to a close, Isabella and I took a leisurely stroll through the Piazza Grande. The piazza was magical at night, bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. We savored the peaceful atmosphere, reflecting on our first day in Montepulciano. It was a day filled with beauty, history, and delicious food and wine. Montepulciano had already captured our hearts, and we were excited to see what the rest of our trip would bring.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Icario Winery, Belvedere di Santa Maria, and Contucci, and perhaps do some shopping at Bottega del Rame. I'm eager to see what new adventures await us!

Even though I forgot my power adapter for European outlets and an umbrella, the day was still a success!

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
