Discover Montepulciano's charm through scenic hikes, Renaissance art, and exquisite Tuscan cuisine. Join José and Isabella on their Italian adventure!
Day 3: Trails, Temples, and Tastes of Tuscany
Today was a perfect blend of physical activity, historical immersion, and culinary delights, showcasing the diverse beauty of Montepulciano. Isabella and I set out to explore the region, and it turned out to be one of those days where everything just clicked into place.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Poliziano. The pastries were delightful, and the coffee gave us the energy we needed for the day's adventures. Plus, the views from their little balcony were a treat. I always appreciate a good start to the day, especially when it involves a strong espresso and a sweet treat, setting the tone for exploration and discovery. It reminded me of our favorite cafes back in Edmonton, but with a Tuscan twist.
Hiking the Sentiero Toscano
After breakfast, we decided to embrace the Tuscan landscape with a hike along the Sentiero Toscano. This trail promised scenic views and a chance to stretch our legs, and it certainly delivered. The rolling hills were carpeted in vineyards and olive groves, creating a picturesque backdrop for our walk. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of wildflowers and the warm earth. I made sure Isabella had enough water, remembering how parched we were during our hike in the Rockies last summer. We've learned to always be prepared, especially under the Tuscan sun.

As we walked, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore such a beautiful place. It's moments like these that remind me why I love traveling – the chance to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with nature. Isabella, ever the observer, pointed out various plants and birds, sharing tidbits of information from her seemingly endless mental library. Her knowledge always enriches our travels, adding layers of depth to every experience.
Exploring Parco Villa Trecci
Our next stop was Parco Villa Trecci, a landscape garden that promised a different kind of beauty. The park is known for its meticulous design and harmony with the surrounding environment. As we entered, we were immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The gardens were a mix of natural and cultivated elements, with olive trees, cypresses, and vineyards blending seamlessly together. It was easy to see why this park is recognized as one of Italy's most beautiful and eco-sustainable gardens.

We strolled through the park, admiring the carefully arranged plants and the stunning views of the Valdichiana. The landscape design, a collaborative effort between the owner, Adelmo Barlesi, and art historian Cinzia Sorlini, was evident in every corner. The park felt like a living work of art, and it was fascinating to see how they had enhanced the natural beauty of the land. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of this serene place, hoping to share its beauty with those back home. Isabella enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, finding a quiet spot to read while I wandered with my camera.
Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
A Spiritual Visit to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio
In the afternoon, we visited the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio, a Renaissance masterpiece located at the foot of Montepulciano. The church, designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, is an architectural gem with a Greek cross plan and a central dome. As we approached the sanctuary, its imposing form and the warm tones of the travertine stone were immediately striking. The building seemed to glow in the afternoon sun, creating a sense of awe and reverence.

Inside, the church was equally impressive. The high altar, adorned with decorative elements, drew our eyes upward, while the fresco of the Madonna Enthroned with Child added a touch of history and spirituality. The story behind the church's construction, sparked by a miracle in 1518, added another layer of intrigue to our visit. It was fascinating to learn how the local community rallied together to build this magnificent sanctuary, driven by faith and a shared sense of purpose. Although only one bell tower was completed, the structure as a whole was breathtaking.
Isabella and I spent some time admiring the architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Whether one is religious or not, it’s hard not to be moved by the beauty and history of such a place. As we left, I felt a sense of calm and reflection, grateful for the opportunity to experience such a significant piece of Renaissance art.
Lunch at Romantico
For lunch, we chose Romantico, a restaurant that promised a delightful culinary experience. The menu featured local Tuscan specialties, and we were eager to try some authentic dishes. The restaurant lived up to its name, with a cozy and intimate atmosphere that made us feel right at home. We started with some bruschetta, topped with fresh tomatoes and basil, followed by handmade pasta with a rich ragu sauce. The flavors were incredible, and it was clear that the ingredients were of the highest quality.

Isabella, always the wine connoisseur, ordered a glass of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the local wine that this region is famous for. She swirled the wine in her glass, took a sip, and closed her eyes, savoring the taste. This is what Tuscany tastes like, she declared, a smile spreading across her face. I took her word for it, as I am more of a beer guy myself, but even I could appreciate the depth and complexity of the wine.
Dinner at Trattoria di Cagnano
As evening approached, we made our way to Trattoria di Cagnano for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine and family-friendly atmosphere. We were greeted warmly by the staff and seated at a cozy table in the corner. The menu was filled with tempting options, and we had a hard time deciding what to order. In the end, we opted for a selection of local dishes, including pici pasta with wild boar sauce, grilled steak with rosemary potatoes, and a side of sautéed spinach. Each dish was bursting with flavor, and it was clear that the chefs took great pride in their craft.

The atmosphere at Trattoria di Cagnano was lively and welcoming, with families and couples enjoying their meals and sharing stories. It felt like a true neighborhood gathering place, and we were happy to be a part of it. The service was attentive and friendly, and our waiter made us feel like valued guests. As we finished our meal, we were completely satisfied, both with the food and the overall experience.
An Evening at Enoteca La Dolce Vita
To cap off our day, we decided to visit Enoteca La Dolce Vita for a relaxing evening of wine tasting. This wine shop and restaurant is located in a historic building and offers a wide selection of local and regional wines. As we stepped inside, we were immediately drawn to the charming atmosphere, with its brick walls, arched ceilings, and spiral staircases. The enoteca was filled with bottles of wine, creating a cozy and inviting space. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.

We sampled a few different wines, learning about the history and production of each from the knowledgeable staff. Isabella was in her element, asking questions and sharing her own insights about the wines. I enjoyed trying new flavors and expanding my palate, even though I still prefer a good Uruguayan Tannat. We also ordered a cheese and charcuterie board to accompany our wine, which was the perfect complement to the rich flavors of the Tuscan wines.
As we sat there, sipping wine and enjoying each other's company, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day we had. From hiking through the picturesque countryside to exploring historical landmarks and indulging in delicious cuisine, we had experienced the best of Montepulciano. It was a day filled with beauty, history, and flavor, and I knew that it would be a highlight of our trip. As we walked back to our accommodation, under the starlit Tuscan sky, I felt a deep sense of contentment and gratitude. Days like these are what make travel so rewarding, and I was grateful to share it all with Isabella.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Riserva naturale Lucciola Bella and visit Azienda Agricola Canneto for more wine tasting, and then the Abbazia di Sant'Antimo. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery and adventure in this beautiful region.
I'm also reminded that I need to find a European power adapter. It’s a small thing, but essential for keeping our devices charged and ready to capture all these amazing memories. Maybe I'll find one at Maledetti Toscani Montepulciano tomorrow!
