Exploring the Cultural and Natural Wonders of Shikoku Island
Day 8: A Day of History and Nature in Kochi
Exploring Kochi Castle and Tosa National Park with Lena, immersing ourselves in history, nature, and local flavors on Shikoku Island.
Echoes of the Past and Whispers of Nature
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kochi, blending historical exploration with the tranquility of nature. Lena and I started our day with a hearty breakfast, setting the stage for a day of discovery. It’s amazing how each day here on Shikoku Island brings a new set of experiences, each more enriching than the last.
Our first stop was Kochi Castle, a landmark I had been eager to visit since planning this trip. As we approached, the castle's impressive structure stood out against the clear blue sky. Built in the early 17th century, Kochi Castle is one of the few original castles in Japan, having survived fires and wars. Walking through the castle grounds, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the past, imagining the feudal lords and samurai who once walked these same paths.

The castle is located on top of Otakasa Hill in the center of Kochi City. It was originally constructed between 1601 and 1611 by Yamanouchi Kazutoyo, after he was stationed in the Tosa region. The castle served as the seat of the Yamauchi lords, who ruled over the region during the Edo Period. What makes Kochi Castle special is that it is the only castle in Japan where the original castle tower and main keep remain intact.
We explored the main keep (donjon), which offered panoramic views of Kochi City. The interior of the castle was fascinating, with local treasures and historical objects on display. Lena was particularly impressed with the intricate details of the castle architecture, including the statues of the shachi sea creatures on the roof.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After immersing ourselves in history, it was time to embrace nature at Tosa National Park. This park offers a diverse landscape, perfect for a refreshing afternoon. We chose one of the trails that wind through the park's lush forests. As we hiked, the sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves and the songs of birds. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from Berlin's urban environment.

Tosa National Park is known for its beautiful scenery and diverse wildlife. The park features various hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to more challenging climbs. We opted for a moderate trail that took us through dense forests and along clear streams. The park's natural beauty was a welcome contrast to the historical sites we had visited earlier in the day.
For lunch, we stopped at Eki-mae Shokudo, a local eatery near Kochi Station. I decided to try Katsuo no Tataki, a local specialty of seared bonito. The fish was incredibly fresh, with a smoky flavor that was simply divine. Lena opted for a vegetarian dish, which was equally delicious. It’s these culinary experiences that truly make a trip memorable.

In the evening, we ventured out to Irish Pub Amontillado, a local bar known for its wide selection of beers. It was a cozy spot, with a friendly atmosphere that made us feel right at home. I enjoyed a pint of Guinness, while Lena tried a local craft beer. We chatted with some of the locals, who were eager to share their stories and recommendations.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we had dinner at Osusowake Shokudo Mado. This restaurant offered a variety of local dishes, and we decided to try a few different options to get a taste of everything. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

I'm also grateful that we didn't forget any of our trip essentials today. It's a good feeling to know that we're well-prepared for whatever adventures come our way. Though I still regret forgetting the adapter for Japanese outlets, we have been able to manage so far.
I am looking forward to tomorrow, when we will visit Amegaeri Waterfall and Dragon Rock. I heard that Amegaeri Waterfall is a beautiful spot, with crystal-clear water cascading down the rocks. And Dragon Rock is supposed to be a unique rock formation that resembles a dragon. I'm excited to see these natural wonders and share my experiences with you all.
