Day 11: A Day of Reflection and Farewell Views in Tokushima
Reflecting on our Shikoku adventure with a visit to the Heike Yashiki Museum and a final breathtaking ride up the Bizan Ropeway.
Saying Goodbye to Shikoku: History, Views, and Culinary Delights
Today marked the end of our incredible journey through Shikoku Island, and while I'm sad to leave, I'm also filled with gratitude for all the experiences we've had. Lena and I spent the day soaking in the last bits of Tokushima's culture and scenery, making memories that I know we'll cherish for years to come.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant&Cafe Riina. This cozy spot offered a delightful start with its Italian-inspired menu. I savored a strong coffee while Lena enjoyed a pastry, both of us appreciating the calm atmosphere before diving into our final day of exploration. The cafe had a modern and inviting ambiance, perfect for fueling up before a day of sightseeing.

After breakfast, we set off to the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore. This museum, a designated tangible cultural property of Miyoshi City, is a beautifully preserved thatched-roof house and storehouse built in 1867. Stepping inside felt like stepping back in time. The museum is located about a 20-minute drive from Tokushima Expressway.
Explore the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore, where the intriguing tales of Japan's Heike clan come alive through captivating exhibits and serene surroundings.
The Heike Yashiki Folk Museum provided a captivating glimpse into the history of the Heike samurai, who sought refuge in the Iya Valley centuries ago. Wandering through the ancient rooms, Lena and I admired the collection of antiques and relics, imagining what life must have been like in this remote mountain dwelling. The garden surrounding the house was equally enchanting, boasting flowering trees, some of which are said to be around 800 years old. It was easy to feel the weight of history in this quiet, secluded space.
Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
After immersing ourselves in history, we headed back to Tokushima City for a final panoramic view from the Bizan Ropeway. The ropeway station is conveniently located on the 5th floor of the Awa Odori Kaikan, making it easily accessible. The ride to the summit of Mount Bizan was smooth and swift, offering stunning views of the city and surrounding landscapes. At the top, we were treated to a breathtaking vista that stretched as far as Awaji Island and the Kii Peninsula. The fresh air and stunning scenery were the perfect way to reflect on our Shikoku adventure.

Before heading for our final dinner, we took some time to stroll through Minami-Shinmachi Shopping Street. This vibrant arcade offered a mix of local shops and eateries, giving us a taste of the city's everyday life. Lena found a beautiful handcrafted scarf, while I picked up some local snacks to bring back to Berlin. The shopping street was bustling with activity, and we enjoyed soaking in the lively atmosphere.

For our last meal on Shikoku, we chose Dining Room Hibari. The restaurant offered a cozy and intimate setting, perfect for a farewell dinner. We savored a delicious meal of local specialties, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trip. The Dining Room Hibari provided a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a final meal. I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness knowing that our adventure was coming to an end, but also immense gratitude for the memories we had created.

This island has exceeded all of my expectations, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality. I'm already dreaming of our next adventure, wherever it may take us. I am also considering the Takegashima Shrine festival that happens every May if we are to return to the area.
This trip with Lena has been nothing short of amazing. From the moment we landed, we were immersed in a world of ancient traditions, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. Shikoku Island has captured a piece of my heart, and I know I'll be back someday to explore its hidden corners and discover even more of its treasures. Until then, sayōnara, Shikoku, and thank you for the memories!
