Day 14: Farewell Hinchinbrook: A Final Day of Queensland Charm
Discover Cardwell's icons on my last day in Queensland: mud crabs, flame trees, and local flavors. A perfect end to my solo adventure!
A Sweet Goodbye to Paradise
As my Hinchinbrook Island adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey of self-discovery and natural beauty I've experienced over the past two weeks. Today wasn't about grand adventures, but about savoring the last moments of Queensland's charm before heading back to Berlin. It was a day of simple pleasures, local encounters, and a gentle transition back to civilization.
The morning started early, as usual, with the sounds of the Australian bush waking up around me. I packed up my campsite one last time, feeling a pang of sadness as I dismantled my temporary home. Hinchinbrook had been a sanctuary, a place where I could disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with myself. I made sure to leave no trace behind, adhering to the Leave No Trace principles I'm so passionate about. It's crucial that we preserve these natural spaces for future generations to enjoy. I felt a sense of accomplishment, knowing I had respected the land and its delicate ecosystem.
With my gear packed and a heart full of memories, I caught the ferry back to the mainland. The familiar coastline of Hinchinbrook slowly faded into the distance, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience its wild beauty. The ferry ride was smooth, and I spent the time chatting with a few other travelers, sharing stories and tips about our adventures in Queensland. It's always inspiring to connect with like-minded people who share a passion for exploration and the outdoors.
Back on the mainland, I made my way to Lucinda Point Hotel Motel for a hearty breakfast. I was famished after all the hiking and camping! I was keen to try some local specialties before heading off. The Lucinda Point Hotel Motel offered a classic Aussie breakfast menu. I opted for a classic bacon and eggs with a side of grilled tomatoes. Nothing too fancy, but perfectly satisfying after weeks of camp cooking. Sipping my coffee, I watched the locals going about their day, feeling a sense of connection to this small coastal community. I thought about Lena back in Berlin, and how much she would have enjoyed this simple moment. She loves the unpretentious charm of small-town cafes, and I made a mental note to recreate this experience for her when I got back.
After breakfast, I decided to explore the nearby town of Cardwell. My first stop was the iconic Big Mud Crab. I'd seen pictures of this quirky roadside attraction, and I couldn't resist a quick visit. It’s a massive sculpture of a mud crab perched atop a building. Apparently, it’s a nod to the region's famous seafood. I snapped a few photos, marveling at the sheer size of the crustacean. It was a fun, kitschy experience, and a reminder not to take myself too seriously while traveling. Plus, it’s a great photo opportunity to share on the Evendo blog!

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the simple ones: a hearty meal, a quirky roadside attraction, and a moment to appreciate the beauty around you.
Next, I sought out the Cardwell Copper Flame Tree. I had read about these vibrant trees, and I was eager to see one in person. I found it near the Cardwell Bush Telegraph Centre. The tree was in full bloom, its fiery orange flowers creating a stunning contrast against the clear blue sky. I spent some time admiring its beauty, taking photos, and simply soaking in the moment. It was a reminder of the incredible diversity and beauty of the Australian flora. I thought about how much Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, would appreciate the vibrant colors and intricate details of the flame tree.

For lunch, I headed to Hotel Hinchinbrook in Ingham. I decided to try their famous pub-style meals. I opted for a classic Aussie burger with the lot – beef patty, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a fried egg, all piled high on a toasted bun. It was exactly what I needed to fuel up for the rest of the day. The Hotel Hinchinbrook had a laid-back, friendly atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the locals about their lives and experiences in North Queensland. They shared stories about fishing, farming, and the challenges of living in a remote area. It was a reminder of the resilience and resourcefulness of the Australian people.

In the late afternoon, I sought out Hooch and Fellow, a bar in Townsville known for its creative cocktails. I wanted to celebrate the end of my solo adventure with a special drink. The bar had a stylish, moody vibe. The bartender was a mixology wizard, crafting unique and flavorful cocktails with fresh, local ingredients. I ordered a concoction with gin, passionfruit, and native Australian herbs. It was the perfect blend of sweet, sour, and herbaceous, and a fitting tribute to the flavors of Queensland. I savored each sip, reflecting on the incredible experiences I had had over the past two weeks. From hiking through pristine rainforests to swimming in crystal-clear waterfalls, Hinchinbrook Island had exceeded all my expectations.

Before dinner, I made sure to visit the Cardwell Spa Pool and Cardwell Forest Drive to soak away my cares. It was a great way to relax and unwind. I even went for a swim at the base of Attie Creek Falls. The slender single-drop waterfall was one of a slew of seasonal natural pools in the region, and made for the perfect swimming conditions.
For my final dinner in Queensland, I wanted something truly memorable, so I went to Lees Hotel - the Pub with No Beer. The pub is known for its delicious meals and inviting atmosphere. I decided to try their Queenslander Parmi, a hearty parmigiana topped with local seafood. It was a fitting tribute to the flavors of the region. The pub was buzzing with activity, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff and locals. It was a reminder of the warmth and hospitality of the Australian people.
