Solo Adventure on Hinchinbrook Island
Day 13: Chasing Waterfalls and Serene Parks: A Day of Natural Wonders
Exploring Hinchinbrook's hidden gems: from the refreshing Attie Creek Falls to the tranquil Borello Park, a day of nature's best kept secrets.
A Day of Discoveries
Today was all about embracing the simple joys of nature. I set out to explore some of Hinchinbrook Island's mainland treasures, places where the local charm shines just as brightly as the natural beauty. It was a day of serene landscapes, refreshing dips, and a deeper connection with this incredible part of Australia.
My day started with a hearty breakfast at Lucinda Cove Resort. The Slipway Bar & Restaurant offers breathtaking views of the Hinchinbrook Channel, which made the experience even more memorable. Sipping on my coffee while watching the morning light dance on the water was the perfect way to kick off a day of exploration. The resort itself seemed quite popular, with many guests praising the clean rooms and excellent service.

Fueled up and ready to go, I made my way towards Attie Creek Falls. The drive itself was scenic, winding through lush landscapes that hinted at the natural beauty to come. Nestled within Girringun National Park, the falls are a bit of a hidden gem. The 700-meter walk from the car park was invigorating, a gentle uphill climb that got my blood pumping. I was surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest, a symphony of chirping birds and rustling leaves. As I got closer, the sound of cascading water grew louder, building anticipation for the sight that awaited me.

And the falls did not disappoint !
There's something magical about watching water tumble down rocks, a display of nature's power and artistry.
The water cascaded down a series of rugged cliffs, creating a mesmerizing spectacle as it plunged into a tranquil pool below. The pool itself was crystal clear, inviting me for a refreshing dip. I couldn't resist! The water was cool and invigorating, a welcome contrast to the humid air. Swimming beneath the falls, feeling the gentle spray on my face, was an experience I won't soon forget.
After drying off and soaking in the beauty of Attie Creek Falls, I decided to head over to Borello Park in Lucinda. Borello Park is a charming beachside spot, perfect for a relaxing afternoon. The park itself is part of a larger foreshore redevelopment project, designed to enhance the area for both locals and tourists. I found a peaceful spot under the shade of a tree and simply enjoyed the tranquility of the surroundings. The beach stretched out before me, a golden expanse of sand meeting the azure waters of the Coral Sea.

I took a leisurely stroll along the beach, breathing in the fresh sea air and listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. It was the perfect opportunity to unwind and reflect on my Hinchinbrook adventure so far. I watched as families played in the sand, children building sandcastles, and couples strolling hand-in-hand. There’s something incredibly soothing about being by the ocean, a sense of peace that washes over you with each passing wave.
Before heading to dinner, I made a quick stop at Hinchinbrook Rural Supplies. I needed to pick up a few essentials – I was running low on sunscreen, and after yesterday's minor sunburn, I wasn't taking any chances. It’s a proper local store, catering to the needs of the surrounding farming community.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Vista Hinchinbrook. This place is perched atop the Cardwell Range, offering stunning views of Hinchinbrook Island and the surrounding channel. The open deck provided a breathtaking panorama, and I could see why it's such a popular spot for both locals and tourists. The restaurant has received rave reviews for its friendly hosts, delicious food, and, of course, those incredible views.

I opted for the seafood grill, eager to sample some of the local catches. The fish was incredibly fresh, cooked to perfection, and bursting with flavor. As I savored each bite, I watched the sun slowly dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with natural wonders.
One thing I’ve learned on this solo trip is the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, but taking the time to connect with nature can be incredibly restorative. Hinchinbrook Island has offered me that opportunity, a chance to recharge and reconnect with myself.
Tomorrow is my last day here, and I plan to make the most of it. I'm heading to The Big Mud Crab and Cardwell Copper Flame Tree, and maybe I will stop by Hooch and Fellow for a farewell drink. I’m already feeling a pang of sadness that this adventure is coming to an end, but I know that the memories I’ve made here will stay with me long after I’ve left. Hinchinbrook, you’ve been a dream!
Thinking of Lena back in Berlin, I realize how much I miss her. We always talked about doing a trip like this together, and I can't wait to share all my stories with her. Maybe next time, we'll explore Hinchinbrook together!
