Finding Peace in the Everyday: Naoshima's Simple Joys

Today was a day of embracing the quieter side of Naoshima. After days spent museum-hopping and pondering large-scale installations, I decided to slow down and appreciate the simpler aspects of island life. It was a refreshing change of pace, reminding me that travel isn't just about ticking off landmarks, but also about savoring the moments in between.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ishii Shouten. This cozy spot is known for its udon, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant had a comforting, local vibe. It wasn't fancy, but it felt authentic, a place where islanders gather to start their day. I slurped down a bowl of their famous udon, the broth warm and savory, the noodles perfectly chewy. It was exactly the kind of simple, satisfying meal I needed to kick off a day of low-key exploration.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of everyday life.

After breakfast, I decided to visit the Naoshima Fishing Park. I’m no fisherman, and frankly, the most I’ve ever caught was a cold, but I was curious. The park was peaceful, with the gentle lapping of waves and the distant hum of boats creating a soothing atmosphere. I rented a rod and some bait, and after a quick lesson from one of the friendly staff, I cast my line. I didn’t catch anything, but I didn’t mind. Just being out there, breathing in the fresh sea air and watching the water, was relaxing enough. I even saw a couple of people reel in some decent-sized fish, which was entertaining in itself.

For lunch, I headed to TakoTako, a restaurant specializing in octopus dishes. It's no secret that Lena is not the biggest fan of octopus, so I had to take this opportunity to enjoy this delicacy. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample their unique creations. I ordered the Takotako Gozen, a set meal featuring various octopus preparations. From octopus sashimi to octopus rice cooked in a mini clay pot, each dish was a culinary adventure. The octopus was tender and flavorful, a testament to the chef's skill and the freshness of the ingredients. It was a delicious and satisfying meal, and I left feeling pleasantly full and ready for more exploration.

Next on my list was Yokobou Park. After the fishing park and satisfying lunch, a relaxing stroll in a park sounded perfect. Tucked away on the island, this park offered stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. I wandered along the winding paths, admiring the lush greenery and the vibrant flowers in bloom. The park was serene and quiet, a perfect place to escape the crowds and reconnect with nature. I found a bench overlooking the sea and sat there for a while, lost in thought as I watched the boats sail by. The weather was mild, with a gentle breeze that rustled the leaves and carried the scent of the ocean. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a reminder of the simple beauty that surrounds us.

Before dinner, I stopped by the 7-Eleven Naoshima Shop to pick up some snacks and drinks. It’s funny how even on an island known for its art and culture, a convenience store can still be a point of interest. This 7-Eleven was like any other, but it was also a microcosm of island life, a place where locals and tourists mingled, stocking up on essentials and treats. I grabbed a few onigiri (rice balls) and a local beer, feeling a sense of connection to the community.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Chikurin for dinner. This traditional izakaya (Japanese tavern) was recommended by a local I met earlier in the day, and I was excited to try it out. The restaurant was small and cozy, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The owner, a friendly gentleman with a passion for cooking, greeted me with a smile and showed me to a table. I ordered a selection of dishes, including grilled fish, karaage (fried chicken), and, of course, some local sake. The food was delicious, each dish prepared with care and attention to detail. The sake was smooth and flavorful, a perfect complement to the meal. I chatted with the owner and some of the other patrons, learning about their lives and experiences on the island. It was a truly authentic and memorable dining experience, and I left feeling grateful for the opportunity to connect with the local community.

Tonight, I’m reflecting on how much I enjoyed today’s slower pace. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of sightseeing, but sometimes, it’s important to take a step back and appreciate the simple things. Tomorrow marks the final day of my Naoshima adventure. I plan to visit the Honmura Lounge & Archive and Danyama, soaking in the last bits of art and culture before heading back to Berlin. And who knows, maybe I'll even find a hidden gem or two along the way.

As I prepare to leave this enchanting island, I feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had and the people I've met. Naoshima has a way of capturing your heart and inspiring your soul, and I know that I will carry its beauty and serenity with me long after I've left its shores.
