Day 1: A Day in Pyrgos: Discovering Santorini's Hidden Gem
Explore the enchanting village of Pyrgos, Santorini, with its medieval charm, stunning views, and delicious local cuisine. A perfect start to our Grecian adventure!
Santorini's Warm Embrace: A Pyrgos Awakening
As our ferry approached Santorini, I could feel the excitement building. After months of planning, Greta and I finally set foot on this legendary island, ready to soak in its beauty and immerse ourselves in its rich history. Little did we know, our first day in Pyrgos would be an unforgettable introduction to the magic of Santorini.
The journey from Berlin to Santorini was smooth, and the short taxi ride to Afoura Houses by K&K in Pyrgos was a breeze. Pyrgos, I soon discovered, is a village that whispers stories of a bygone era. Away from the bustling crowds of Fira and Oia, it offered a tranquil haven, a perfect starting point for our Grecian escapade. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of the sea and the promise of adventure.

Our accommodation was a delightful surprise. Afoura Houses exuded a cozy charm, with its traditional architecture and warm, inviting atmosphere. After settling in, Greta and I were eager to explore. The first stop on our list was Pyrgos Kallistis, the village's crowning glory. As we ascended the winding cobblestone paths, I couldn't help but marvel at the panoramic views unfolding before us. The entire island of Santorini stretched out in a breathtaking vista, the caldera shimmering under the Aegean sun.

The beauty of Santorini lies not just in its iconic views, but in the hidden corners and quiet moments that reveal its soul.
Pyrgos Kallistis, once the capital of Santorini, felt like stepping back in time. The medieval castle, or Kasteli, stood proudly at the village's heart, its ancient walls whispering tales of Venetian rule and pirate invasions. We wandered through the labyrinthine alleys, each turn revealing a new photographic opportunity: a vibrant bougainvillea cascading over a whitewashed wall, a quaint chapel with a blue dome piercing the sky, a sleepy cat basking in the sun.
As an ESL teacher, I'm always fascinated by the history and culture of the places I visit. Pyrgos was no exception. The village's strategic location, perched high on a hill, offered a natural vantage point, a place where residents could spot approaching dangers and defend their homes. The narrow, winding streets were designed to confuse and disorient invaders, a testament to the ingenuity of the islanders.
After our historical immersion, it was time for a culinary adventure. For breakfast, we ventured to Metaxi Mas, a restaurant recommended by several locals. Tucked away behind a church, down a winding path, it felt like discovering a secret. The restaurant lived up to its name, which means between us in Greek, offering a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The food was a delightful blend of Cretan and Santorinian cuisine, with fresh, local ingredients bursting with flavor. Greta particularly enjoyed the lamb, while I savored the dolmades, each bite a symphony of herbs and spices.

For lunch, we decided to try Pyrgos Restaurant, known for its stunning views and traditional Santorinian dishes. Located at one of the highest points in the village, the restaurant offered a breathtaking panorama of the island. The food was equally impressive, with fresh seafood and local vegetables prepared with a modern twist. I opted for the sea bream, while Greta indulged in the chicken, both dishes cooked to perfection.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began its descent, we sought out the perfect spot to witness the legendary Santorini sunset. We found it at PK Cocktail Bar, perched on the edge of the caldera. The bar, a Santorini institution, offered a unique blend of baroque classic style and breathtaking views. As we sipped on expertly crafted cocktails, the sky transformed into a canvas of fiery hues, painting the caldera in shades of orange, pink, and purple. The experience was simply magical.

The story of PK Cocktail Bar is quite interesting. Founded in 1976 by Gregory Chrysos, it was the first cocktail bar on Santorini. His son, Vassilis Chryssos, now runs the bar, carrying on his father's legacy of serving fresh, innovative cocktails in a stunning setting. The attention to detail and the passion for hospitality were evident in every aspect of the experience.
As the evening drew to a close, we made our way to Argo Restaurant in Fira for dinner. Though slightly outside of Pyrgos, the restaurant came highly recommended, and we were eager to experience its culinary delights. The setting was enchanting, with a beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking the Aegean Sea. The food was a celebration of Greek cuisine, with fresh seafood, local vegetables, and traditional recipes prepared with a modern flair. The staff was attentive and charming, making our dining experience truly memorable. We shared several dishes, including the octopus with mastic and caper leaves, the sea bass gyros with pita bread and yoghurt, and the famous shrimp pasta cooked with onions and creamy honey sauce. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, a testament to the chef's skill and passion.

After dinner, we savored a leisurely stroll through Fira, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and admiring the illuminated caldera. The town was bustling with activity, but we were grateful for the tranquility of Pyrgos, our home base for the night.
Reflecting on our first day in Santorini, I realized that Pyrgos had captured my heart. Its timeless beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and authentic charm had provided the perfect introduction to the island. As we prepared for our adventures tomorrow – exploring Akrotiri and the Red Beach – I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what lay ahead.
Tomorrow promises more exploration, with plans to visit Akrotiri, the ancient Minoan city buried by a volcanic eruption, and the famed Red Beach, known for its unique crimson sands. I'm also eager to sample more of Santorini's culinary delights, with lunch at To Psaraki in Vlychada and dinner at Ambrosia Restaurant in Oia on the agenda. And, of course, a visit to Santorini Folk Art Traditional Shop is in order, to pick up a few souvenirs for our friends and family back home.
Back at Afoura Houses, Greta and I sat on our balcony, gazing at the starlit sky. The day had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a sensory feast that had left us feeling invigorated and inspired. As I drifted off to sleep, I knew that our Grecian adventure had only just begun, and I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.
