Saying Goodbye to Húsavík

As my solo journey through Iceland comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had in Húsavík. From the awe-inspiring whale watching tours to the cozy evenings spent exploring local eateries, this charming town has captured a special place in my heart. Today, on my final day, I set out to soak in the last moments of Icelandic beauty before heading back to Berlin and Greta.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Heimabakarí. This local bakery is known for its fresh pastries and strong coffee, the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. Though I read that it was closed last year due to operational difficulties, I was happy to find it open and serving the community. I grabbed a cinnamon roll and a cappuccino, savoring the warmth and sweetness as I planned my final day's itinerary.

First on the list was Húsavík Park, also known as Skrúðgarður, a green oasis in the heart of town. Despite the winter chill, the park was serene and inviting. I strolled along the winding paths, admiring the diverse collection of trees and shrubs. The Búðará river meandered through the park, adding a soothing soundtrack to my walk. I paused by the duck pond, watching the birds glide across the water, a peaceful moment that felt like a fitting farewell to this tranquil town.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Next, I ventured out to Æðarfossar, a mesmerizing waterfall located a short drive south of Húsavík. The drive itself was scenic, with snow-dusted fields stretching as far as the eye could see. As I arrived, the sight of Æðarfossar was breathtaking. Although not very high, the waterfall is segmented and flows around three small islands, creating a unique and picturesque scene. The sound of the rushing water was invigorating, and I spent some time simply absorbing the natural beauty. I learned that the river Laxá, which feeds the waterfall, is a popular spot for fishing brown trout. I also read that the nearby farm has ties to Magnus Magnusson, the late presenter of Mastermind, which added an interesting historical layer to the visit.

For lunch, I stopped by Grill 66, a local spot known for its delicious sandwiches. I opted for the fish sandwich, eager to get one last taste of Icelandic seafood. The sandwich was flavorful and satisfying, and the cozy atmosphere of the grill made it a perfect midday stop. It’s amazing how a simple sandwich can encapsulate the essence of a place.

In the evening, I decided to treat myself to a final Icelandic dinner at Naustið, a family-run restaurant specializing in fresh, local fish. The bright yellow wooden house felt warm and welcoming, and the mariner interior added to the cozy atmosphere. I ordered the fish of the day, grilled salmon, and it was cooked to perfection. The flavors were simple yet exquisite, highlighting the freshness of the ingredients. I also tried their signature fish soup, which was hearty and comforting. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey in Húsavík.

To cap off my last night, I headed to Húsavík Öl, a local brewpub, to sample some Icelandic craft beer. Housed in an old milk factory, the brewpub had a rustic charm and a welcoming vibe. I tried a raspberry sour ale and a blood orange sour ale with a hint of licorice. The unique flavors were a pleasant surprise, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly brewers about their craft. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on my adventures in Húsavík.
