Zen Gardens and Spicy Curries: A Kyoto Contradiction

Today was a day of contrasts, a delightful mix of serene landscapes and vibrant flavors that only Kyoto can offer. Lena and I set out to explore more of this captivating city, and it certainly didn't disappoint. From the peaceful gardens of Tenryu-ji to the unexpected spice of a local diner, Kyoto continues to surprise and enchant us. I am constantly reminded that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about experiencing new things, and that includes challenging my taste buds!

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Yasakadori Enraku. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Lena, ever the adventurous one, tried a local Kyoto specialty. The restaurant itself was charming, with cozy private rooms. I read somewhere that you might even catch a Maiko here, but no such luck for us today. It set a perfect tone for the day – calm, authentic, and delicious. We fueled up for a day of exploring, making sure to pack our camera and my trusty notebook.

Our first stop was Tenryu-ji, a Zen temple nestled in the heart of Arashiyama. The crisp February air nipped at our faces as we walked through the entrance, but the beauty of the Sogenchi Garden quickly warmed us. The garden, designed by Muso Soseki, was breathtaking. Even in winter, the landscape held a quiet majesty. The carefully placed rocks, the meticulously raked gravel, and the serene pond created a sense of perfect harmony. Lena, with her architect's eye, was particularly fascinated by the way the garden incorporated the surrounding mountains into its design. There wasn't much snow, but I could imagine the snow-dusted garden enhancing the minimalist beauty, offering a serene, otherworldly landscape.

The beauty of a Zen garden lies not in its grandeur, but in its ability to evoke a sense of peace and contemplation.

We strolled along the walking paths, admiring the views and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. It was a far cry from the bustling streets of Berlin, and I found myself feeling incredibly relaxed. I made a mental note to try and incorporate some of this Zen into my daily life back home. As we walked, I told Lena about the Cloud Dragon painting in the Hatto (Dharma Hall), but I was bummed to find out that the hall is closed to the public on certain days, and today was one of them. I guess that gives us a reason to come back another time. However, even without seeing the dragon, Tenryu-ji was an unforgettable experience.

Next on our list was the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. After the Zen garden, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. Established in 1924, it's Japan's oldest public botanical garden. While many of the outdoor plants were dormant for the winter, the greenhouse was a tropical paradise. It was warm and humid, a welcome contrast to the chilly air outside. We wandered through the various sections, admiring the exotic plants and flowers. Lena was in her element, pointing out different species and explaining their origins. I, on the other hand, was content to simply enjoy the vibrant colors and fragrant aromas. The plum blossoms were beginning to bloom, signaling the coming of spring. I’ve read that during the cherry blossom season, 500 cherry trees of about 180 varieties bloom one after another here, so it sounds like something to behold!

For lunch, we decided to try something completely different: Khaos Spice Diner. I know what you're thinking: curry in Kyoto? But after days of traditional Japanese cuisine, we were craving something with a bit more kick. This place was a hidden gem, tucked away in the Teramachi shopping arcade. The restaurant had a funky, laid-back vibe, with film posters on the walls and reggae music playing in the background. It felt like a little slice of Southeast Asia in the middle of Kyoto. I opted for their signature corn curry, while Lena went for the chicken curry. Both were delicious, with a perfect balance of spices and flavors. It was a welcome change of pace, and it reminded me that culinary adventures can be found in the most unexpected places.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to dinner at Kinmata. This restaurant is located in the heart of Nishiki Market, and it's known for its traditional Kaiseki dinners. This was a true culinary experience, with a parade of beautifully crafted dishes made from local, seasonal ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously plated and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was elegant and refined. It was a perfect way to end a day of contrasts, a reminder of the beauty and sophistication that Kyoto has to offer. I was particularly impressed by the attention to detail and the focus on quality ingredients. It was a pricey meal, but worth it for the experience.

After dinner, we decided to check out Bar K6. I'd read about it online, and it sounded like a cool place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. The bar had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, with a wide selection of whiskies and cocktails. I opted for a classic Old Fashioned, while Lena tried a local sake-based cocktail. The drinks were expertly made, and the service was friendly and attentive. It was the perfect place to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. The bartender told me that the owner also runs the pastry shop Ghost on Teramachi Street, where most of the pastry cakes contain liquor. I might have to check that out tomorrow!

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Philosopher's Path and the Gion district, and maybe do some shopping at mina Kyoto. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery in this amazing city. I’m hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back to Berlin, maybe some traditional crafts or local delicacies. And of course, I'll be on the lookout for more culinary adventures. Kyoto, you've captured my heart (and my stomach!).

I am so glad I didn't forget my notebook today, or I would have been struggling to remember all the details. It's funny, I almost forgot the umbrella again, but Lena reminded me! We really do make a great travel team.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for this experience. Kyoto has a way of slowing you down, of making you appreciate the simple things in life. It's a city that nourishes the soul, and I'm so glad that Lena and I were able to experience it together. Until tomorrow, sayonara!
