A Day of Serenity and Scenery

Today was a beautiful blend of cultural immersion and breathtaking natural beauty. Loei continues to surprise and enchant us with its hidden gems. It's days like these that remind me why Lena and I love to travel – to experience new perspectives and find tranquility in unexpected places.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Eat Me. The name itself was intriguing, and the food didn't disappoint. We enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal, fueling up for the day's adventures. It’s funny, I always find it amusing when restaurants have quirky names; it certainly makes them memorable!

Wat Neramit Wipatsana: A Temple of Red Laterite

After breakfast, we set off to explore Wat Neramit Wipatsana. This temple is unlike any other I’ve seen in Thailand. Located a short distance from Dan Sai, it sits proudly on a hill, making it an important and visually striking landmark. What immediately caught my eye was the unique construction material: red laterite. The entire temple complex, from the ordination hall to the pagoda, is built with this distinctive clay, giving it a unique earthy tone and texture.

The ordination hall is said to be the largest in Thailand, adorned with colorful murals depicting Buddhist stories. Inside, we found a replica of Phra Phuttha Chinnarat, a revered Buddha image from Phitsanulok. The craftsmanship was exquisite, and the serene atmosphere invited a moment of quiet reflection. Lena lit a candle and offered a prayer, while I took a few moments to admire the intricate details of the artwork.

The temple's unique architecture and peaceful setting offered a serene escape, reminding me of the beauty in simplicity and the importance of cultural preservation.

We also visited the Phrakhru Phawana Wisutthiyan Mondop, which houses a wax figure of Luang Pho Maha Phan Sila Wisuttho, the temple's founder. It was fascinating to learn about his life and the impact he had on the community. The temple is not only a place of worship but also a center for Vipassana meditation, a practice that emphasizes mindfulness and inner peace. As someone who often gets caught up in the hustle of city life, the idea of finding such tranquility was very appealing.

As we walked around the temple grounds, we noticed a pretty fountain and a grand archway marking the entrance. The surrounding wooded area added to the sense of peace and seclusion. It was easy to see why this temple is a popular destination for both pilgrims and tourists. Before leaving, we made sure to dress respectfully, covering our knees and shoulders, and removing our shoes before entering the sacred buildings.

Phu Pa Po: Loei's Mount Fuji

Our next stop was Phu Pa Po Mountain Top Viewpoint, often called the “Mount Fuji of Loei” due to its distinctive flat top. The drive to Phu Pa Po was scenic, with rolling hills and lush greenery all around. Upon arrival, we learned that the final ascent to the viewpoint is best done by a local Thai-style tractor, or “E-taek”. The ride itself was an adventure, bouncing along the rough terrain, but it was well worth it.

As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly stunning. There are four viewpoints along the way, each offering a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. The final viewpoint, at the summit, was truly breathtaking. From there, we could see a panoramic vista of Loei province, with its rolling hills, verdant forests, and patchwork of rice paddies.

The weather was perfect, with a gentle breeze and clear skies. Lena and I spent a long time simply soaking in the view, taking photos, and enjoying the tranquility. It was easy to understand why this spot is so beloved by locals and tourists alike. The viewpoint is accessible to visitors of all ages, making it a great spot for families. We saw several groups of people enjoying picnics and taking in the scenery.

I couldn't resist snapping dozens of photos; the landscape was simply too stunning to pass up. The way the light played across the hills, the vibrant green of the rice paddies, and the distant mountains created a mesmerizing scene. It was one of those moments where I felt truly connected to nature and grateful for the opportunity to witness such beauty.

Shopping Spree and Culinary Delights

After our mountain adventure, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Outlet@loei. I was hoping to find a new travel adapter, since I had forgotten mine back in Berlin. Lena was on the lookout for some unique souvenirs to bring back home. While the outlet wasn't exactly a treasure trove of forgotten essentials, we did manage to find a few interesting items. I picked up a universal adapter (finally!), and Lena found a beautiful handwoven scarf that she absolutely loved.

For lunch, we decided to try Loei Kebab Plus, a spot recommended for its Western food at affordable prices. It was a welcome change from the Thai cuisine we had been enjoying, and the kebabs were indeed delicious. The owner was incredibly friendly, and we chatted for a while about our travels and his experience running a restaurant in Loei. I learned that he had previously worked in a bakery in the UK, which explained the quality of the brioche burger buns.

As evening approached, we made our way to FEELS GOOD LOEI for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Thai dishes and warm ambiance. The atmosphere was indeed inviting, with traditional Thai decor and a cozy setting. We ordered a variety of dishes, from spicy curries to refreshing salads, and everything was bursting with flavor. The staff were friendly and helpful, recommending dishes that suited our tastes.

Reflections on the Day

Today was a testament to the diverse experiences Loei has to offer. From the spiritual heights of Wat Neramit Wipatsana to the panoramic views of Phu Pa Po, we were constantly amazed by the beauty and tranquility of this region. The friendly locals, delicious food, and unique cultural experiences made this day one to remember. I’m so glad Lena and I decided to venture off the beaten path and explore this hidden gem of Thailand.

Tomorrow marks the end of our Loei adventure. We plan to visit Chateau De Loei and the Loei River, followed by a farewell dinner at Outlaw Brewing. I’m looking forward to one last day of exploration before we begin our journey back to Berlin.

Until then, Sawasdee Krap!
