Exploring the Wilderness of Slovak Paradise National Park
Day 2: Conquering Suchá Belá: A Ladder to Paradise
Follow my adventurous hike through the stunning Suchá Belá gorge in Slovak Paradise National Park. Ladders, waterfalls, and pure nature!
Scaling the Heights of Suchá Belá
Today was nothing short of an adventure! The Slovak Paradise National Park lived up to its name, offering a day filled with exhilarating climbs, breathtaking views, and the kind of natural beauty that makes you feel utterly insignificant in the best possible way. Katarína and I tackled the famous Suchá Belá gorge, and it was an experience I won't soon forget.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Salaš Čingov. I opted for the *bryndzové halušky*, a traditional Slovak dish of potato dumplings with sheep cheese, while Katarína enjoyed the cabbage soup. Fuelling up with traditional Slovak cuisine was the perfect way to prepare for the day’s hike. The restaurant had a rustic charm, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, setting a positive tone for the adventure ahead.

After breakfast, we drove to Podlesok, the starting point for the Suchá Belá trail. The car park was already bustling with fellow hikers eager to explore the gorge. I double-checked our gear, making sure we had plenty of water and our trusty hiking boots were securely laced. I did feel a pang of regret for forgetting the mosquito repellent, though. Hopefully, the insects wouldn't be too bothersome.
As we entered the gorge, the temperature dropped noticeably, a welcome change from the mild September air. The towering rock formations and dense forest canopy created a cool, shaded environment. The trail immediately began to ascend, and we soon encountered the first of many ladders that would define our journey.
I must admit, my heart skipped a beat as I looked up at the seemingly endless series of ladders and metal steps clinging to the rock face. It was a far cry from the gentle hills of Brandenburg. But with Katarína by my side, offering words of encouragement, I took a deep breath and began to climb. The metal felt cold and solid beneath my hands as I ascended, each rung bringing a new perspective on the stunning natural architecture of the gorge.
The waterfalls were the highlight of the Suchá Belá experience. The Misové Waterfalls, Okienkový Waterfall, Korytový Waterfall, and Bočný Waterfall each presented a unique challenge and a mesmerizing spectacle. Climbing alongside the cascading water, with the spray misting our faces, was both invigorating and humbling. I felt a primal connection to nature, a sense of awe at the power and beauty of the natural world.
The ladders of Suchá Belá are more than just a means to an end; they're a pathway to a deeper connection with nature.
There were moments when I questioned my sanity, especially when faced with a particularly steep or exposed section of the trail. But the sense of accomplishment after conquering each obstacle was immense. Katarína, ever the pragmatist, reminded me to focus on the present moment, to appreciate the incredible surroundings, and to trust my footing. Her calm demeanor was a much-needed anchor amidst my occasional bursts of adrenaline.
About halfway through our hike, we reached Chata Kláštorisko, a mountain restaurant perched atop a clearing. We stopped for lunch, enjoying a simple but satisfying meal of *cesnaková polievka* (garlic soup) and *vyprážaný syr* (fried cheese). The restaurant was bustling with hikers, their faces flushed with exertion and excitement. It was a convivial atmosphere, and we chatted with fellow travelers, sharing stories and tips about the trails.

As we sat there, refueling our bodies and spirits, I couldn't help but reflect on the unique beauty of the Slovak Paradise. It's a place where nature reigns supreme, where the human presence feels both insignificant and deeply connected. The ladders and trails are a testament to human ingenuity, but they also serve as a reminder of our vulnerability in the face of nature's grandeur.
After lunch, we continued our descent, taking a different route back to Podlesok. The trail wound through lush forests, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows, creating a magical ambiance.
By the time we reached Podlesok, our legs were weary, but our hearts were full. We had conquered Suchá Belá, and in doing so, we had forged a deeper connection with each other and with the natural world. To celebrate our accomplishment, we stopped at Kilderkin Podlesok, a charming stand bar near Hrabušice. I enjoyed a refreshing Slovak beer, while Katarína opted for Kofola, a local cola drink. The bar had a cozy atmosphere, and we relaxed, savoring the moment and reliving the highlights of our hike.

For dinner, we decided to try Reštaurácia Rumanka, drawn in by its promise of traditional Slovak cuisine and a friendly family atmosphere. The restaurant was indeed charming, with a rustic interior and a welcoming staff. We started with *kapustnica*, a hearty sauerkraut soup, followed by *Spišské džatky*, potato dumplings filled with smoked meat. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous, providing the perfect end to a physically demanding day.

As I write this, back at our campsite, I can still feel the ache in my muscles and the lingering scent of pine in the air. It was a day of challenges and triumphs, of breathtaking beauty and quiet contemplation. Suchá Belá is more than just a hike; it's an experience that touches the soul.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Klauzy Slovak Paradise National Park. I've heard it's another gem worth discovering, and I'm eager to see what awaits us. Before that, however, we will have breakfast at Nostalgie, Restaurant- Café, then lunch at Reštaurácia PONIKLEC, and dinner at Pizza Fonzy Restaurant. Also, Katarína expressed interest in visiting Nad Tatrou - Slovenské darčeky a dekorácie shop, so I'm sure we'll find some interesting souvenirs there.
I am looking forward to another day of exploration and adventure in this beautiful corner of Slovakia. And hopefully, I won't forget the mosquito repellent this time!
The experience today reminded me of something my grandfather used to say:
*“Kto sa bojí, nech nejde do lesa.”*
Which translates to:
*“He who is afraid, should not go into the forest.”*
It seems quite fitting for today's adventure. Good night from Slovak Paradise!
